Pfizer's Irish manufacturing runs from active ingredient chemistry at Ringaskiddy in Cork Harbour to biologics and vaccines at Grange Castle in west Dublin, with solid-dose production at Newbridge in Kildare. Pfizer states that it has operated in Ireland since 1969 and employs around 3,200 people across six sites. Four of them are manufacturing: Ringaskiddy, which began producing food chemicals in 1969 and now makes active pharmaceutical ingredients; Little Island, opened in 1978; Newbridge, opened in 1992 and described as Europe's largest solid-dose plant; and Grange Castle, one of the larger integrated biotechnology plants in the company's network. The hazard differs sharply between them. Ringaskiddy's chemistry uses flammable solvents in reactors, tanks and drying equipment, so Zone 1 and Zone 2 gas areas are plausible there. Newbridge handles powders, so dust zones around milling, blending and compression are the question. Grange Castle is mostly aqueous bioprocess, where classified space is limited to solvent stores, alcohol sanitisation points and utilities.
At Pfizer the difficult question is often not the zone but the quality system. A phone that is safe to carry into a solvent suite still has to be a documented, controlled item.
A handset in a manufacturing suite is wiped with alcohol and disinfectants far more often than a handset on an oil site. IP68 sealing and rugged build are the basis for a device that can tolerate that routine, but the cleaning agent list in each suite should be checked with the manufacturer before it is adopted.
Ringaskiddy-type buildings can have solvent in the reactor hall and dry powder in the next room. Zone 1 for gas and Zone 21 for dust come from the same design target, and the ATEX marking aimed for is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4, which one handset can carry through both rather than a handset for each.
New equipment in a GMP area goes through change control with a stated configuration. Android 16 with MDM lets camera, location and installed applications be fixed and recorded, so quality has a defined build to approve rather than an unmanaged phone.
Leaving a suite to charge a phone means de-gowning and re-gowning. The 4,000 mAh battery is specified for a whole shift with the camera and a work order application open, which removes the reason to leave.
Grange Castle and Ringaskiddy are campuses, not single buildings. Four-constellation GNSS and the 50 MP camera help a maintenance technician report an exact location and defect between buildings.
An operator at a reactor charge point needs to confirm the batch step, photograph a connection and call the supervisor. A handset designed for Zone 1 allows that without stepping out of the classified boundary.
Planned maintenance windows bring contractors and calibration specialists. They can be enrolled on a restricted profile limited to the permit and reporting applications and removed when they finish.
Dust areas around milling and blending call for equipment designed for Zone 21. The same device then follows a technician into a Zone 1 solvent area without a swap.
That depends on the area classification drawing for each building, which is the employer's document under the Part 8 regulations. As a guide, solvent reactor and storage areas are gas zones, and milling and drying areas are dust zones. A manufacturing site can carry both, which is why the design target covers both.
Pfizer's quality teams decide what needs qualification, so we do not describe a Pfizer process. In general the evidence they ask for is a controlled configuration, a cleaning method and a maintenance route. Provide the datasheet and the MDM policy early to the quality group.
