Explosion proof mobile phone for Oil, Gas and Heavy Industry in Ireland

Ireland's hazardous heavy industry is a short list of large sites: the Whitegate refinery in Cork Harbour, the Corrib gas terminal at Bellanaboy in Mayo, and the Shannon Estuary, where Aughinish Alumina, the Foynes fuel terminal and the Moneypoint power station stand. This page is for the people who specify an explosion proof mobile phone for oil, gas and heavy industry in Ireland. The SAMS IS-04Z1 is designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 and is being certified ahead of its Q4 2026 launch. The IS-04Z1 is designed around intrinsic safety rather than a flameproof enclosure.

Where oil, gas and heavy industry are classified in Ireland

The Health and Safety Authority's upper tier COMAH list is a reasonable map of this sector. It includes Irving Oil's Whitegate refinery, Calor's LPG site at Whitegate, the Atlantic Fuel Supply Company terminal at Foynes Harbour and the ESB's Moneypoint generating station at Killimer in Clare. Corrib is separate, a gas field in the Atlantic with its processing terminal at Bellanaboy, and Aughinish Alumina on the Shannon is Europe's largest alumina refinery. These are very different sites with very different hazards: hydrocarbon vapour at Whitegate, natural gas at Bellanaboy, fuel storage and loading at Foynes, and coal handling and fuel oil at Moneypoint. A phone policy cannot be written once for all of them; the area classification at each site is what governs.

Operators and sites

Irving Oil
Owner of the Whitegate refinery, Ireland's only refinery.
Vermilion Energy
Operator of Corrib and the Bellanaboy Bridge gas terminal.
Aughinish Alumina
Alumina refinery at Askeaton on the Shannon Estuary.
ESB
Moneypoint generating station, Killimer, County Clare.
Atlantic Fuel Supply Company
Fuel terminal at Foynes Harbour, County Limerick.
Calor Teoranta
LPG installation at Whitegate, County Cork.
Dublin Port tenants
Fuel terminals and tank storage in the capital's port.

Hazard types by location

Whitegate
Hydrocarbon vapour in the process units, tanks and jetty; the site operates under the COMAH regime.
Bellanaboy
Natural gas reception and processing; leaks at flanges and vents.
Aughinish
Combustion plant and fuel supply; most of the process is not classified, so ask which areas are.
Moneypoint
Fuel handling and storage on a large power station; coal dust is a recognised hazard in coal-fired plants generally.
Foynes
Fuel storage and ship-to-shore loading at a deep-water berth.
Whitegate LPG
LPG storage with its own classified perimeter.
Dublin Port
Tank farms and bunkering connections beside the quay.

What Irish heavy industry does to a handset

These are coastal sites with changeable weather and a heavy reliance on contractors for shutdowns. The conditions are specific.

Battery4,000 mAh
Camera50 MP
OSAndroid 16

Estuary and Atlantic weather

Foynes, Moneypoint and Whitegate all sit on tidal water, and Bellanaboy is on the Mayo coast. Rain and salt air are normal, and IP68 sealing is the baseline. The target marking of II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4 is the figure that matters inside the plant boundary.

Turnarounds bring the crowd

Refinery and power station outages arrive in blocks, with many contractors on site for weeks. A managed Android 16 handset can be issued, locked to the approved applications and wiped on exit, which a personal phone cannot.

Gas groups that vary by site

Methane at Bellanaboy, mixed hydrocarbons at Whitegate, LPG at the gas site, and hydrogen where it is present all fall in groups the IS-04Z1 is designed to cover through its group IIC target. The classification drawing for each area still decides.

Long distances and few charge points

A refinery or power station spreads over a big footprint, and a round from the control room to a far tank can be a long walk. The 4,000 mAh battery is specified for a full shift, and four-constellation GNSS locates a defect on a large site.

Documented evidence of each fault

A 50 MP camera and a recorded location make a defect report concrete. MDM policy on the camera can be applied where site photography rules demand it.

Use cases · Irish heavy industry

Where the IS-04Z1 would go to work.

Refining01

Rounds and turnaround at Whitegate

A process operator walks a route through units and tanks, and a turnaround planner follows a work pack. See the page on an explosion proof phone for Irving Oil for detail on that site.

Marine03

Fuel loading at Foynes and Whitegate

Staff on a jetty supervise a transfer and need to speak to a vessel and to the control room, with a handset that tolerates spray and a wet deck.

Explosion proof mobile phone questions for Ireland

Which Irish sites are classed as upper tier COMAH?

The Health and Safety Authority publishes the list and updates it. It includes Whitegate refinery, Foynes, Moneypoint and the Whitegate LPG site, among others. Check the current list rather than relying on this page.

Is Aughinish a hazardous area site?

Parts of it can be. A large alumina plant has combustion plant and fuel storage, but most of its process is not flammable-atmosphere work. The site's area classification identifies exactly where a handset must be Ex rated.

Does coal dust need Zone 21 equipment?

Where coal is handled, dust zones around conveyors, mills and storage are common, and Zone 21 is the design target for the IS-04Z1. Whether Moneypoint's current fuel handling has such areas is for ESB to say.

Are these operators customers of SAMS?

No. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch with certification in progress, and SAMS has no supply relationship with the operators named here.
