Explosion proof mobile phone for MSD in Ireland

MSD runs one of the broader manufacturing networks in the Irish pharmaceutical sector, from active ingredients at Ballydine in Tipperary to vaccines at Brinny in Cork, fill-finish at Carlow and biologics at Dunboyne and in Dublin. This page is for the EHS, engineering and quality teams considering an explosion proof mobile phone for MSD in Ireland. The SAMS IS-04Z1 is designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 and is being certified ahead of its Q4 2026 launch. The IS-04Z1 is designed around intrinsic safety rather than a flameproof enclosure.

What is classified across MSD in Ireland

MSD's own site pages list operations in Carlow, Cork, Dublin, Meath, Louth and Tipperary. Ballydine in Tipperary dates from 1976 and develops and supplies active ingredients and formulated product, and MSD describes it as its main small-molecule pipeline site worldwide. That is the plant most likely to have classified solvent areas. Brinny in Cork specialises in novel vaccines and immuno-oncology testing. Carlow, started in 2008, is a filling site for vaccines, biologics and small-molecule drug product. Dunboyne in Meath is a single-use biologics drug substance plant, and MSD Biotech in Dublin began full manufacturing in 2021. Dundalk in Louth is the newest addition. The result is a network where solvent and powder risk is concentrated in one or two buildings and the rest of the estate is a clean, tightly controlled production environment.

What a multi-site pharma network does to a handset

MSD's plants are spread across the country and made for different jobs. A device policy has to hold across that spread.

IP ratingIP68
Battery4,000 mAh
Camera50 MP
OSAndroid 16

One policy across six counties

A pharmaceutical group wants the same device rules on each site. Android Enterprise and existing MDM consoles let an IT team apply one configuration to handsets in Tipperary and in Meath, rather than adapting for each plant.

Zone 1 at the chemistry sites, quiet elsewhere

Ballydine may have classified areas where Carlow and Dunboyne have few or none. A handset designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 can follow an engineer between a solvent area and a fill-finish hall, subject to the cleanroom rules. The ATEX marking target is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4.

Wipe-down and gowning

Suites are cleaned frequently and gowning is strict. IP68 sealing and rugged build support the device, but any cleaning agent should be agreed with the manufacturer first.

Shift working and a full shift of battery

Pharmaceutical production runs round the clock in many areas. The 4,000 mAh battery is specified to last a shift with the camera and a work order application running, so there is no need to leave the plant to charge.

Records that stand up to audit

Photographs, timestamps and a recorded position add evidence to a deviation or a maintenance entry. The 50 MP camera and four-constellation GNSS provide the raw material, and MDM policy controls where the data goes.

Use cases · MSD in Ireland

Where the IS-04Z1 would go to work.

Active ingredients01

Solvent areas at Ballydine

An operator charging a vessel or changing a drum needs to confirm the step, photograph a connection and call the supervisor from within the classified area. One designed-for-Zone-1 handset avoids carrying a radio and a camera.

Maintenance02

Cross-site engineering

A reliability or calibration engineer visiting several sites needs the same enrolled phone in each, with a consistent configuration that quality has already reviewed.

Utilities03

Plant rooms and effluent

Boiler houses, generators and effluent treatment may be classified in places, and this is where an engineer on call at night needs a handset that is allowed in.

Questions · MSD

Explosion proof mobile phone questions for Ireland

Is a classified area likely at MSD's biologics sites?

Often little or none, since bioprocess is largely aqueous. Small amounts of alcohol and the utilities may be classified. The site's own area classification decides, and the handset is only needed where that document says a zone exists.

Which MSD site is most likely to need Zone 1 equipment?

Ballydine, because it makes active ingredients using solvent chemistry. We have not seen its area classification and do not describe it, so confirm with MSD's EHS and engineering teams.

Does MSD approve phones for its sites?

We do not know MSD's equipment approval route and have no relationship with the company. Ask the site's procurement, EHS and quality teams what they require before a device enters a controlled area.

Can the IS-04Z1 be trialled today?

No. It is pre-launch and no certificate has been issued yet. The datasheet and certification schedule are available now, and any trial in a classified area waits for the certificate.
