Explosion proof mobile phone for PetroChina (CNPC) sites

PetroChina is the listed operating arm of CNPC and the producer behind a large share of China's onshore oil and gas, from Daqing in the northeast to the Ordos Basin, Xinjiang and Sichuan. This page is for the HSE, instrumentation and telecoms teams deciding what an explosion proof mobile phone in China may carry into those wellfields, plants and stations. The IS-04Z1 is designed around intrinsic safety rather than a flameproof enclosure.

Where an explosion proof mobile phone is needed across PetroChina in China

PetroChina runs its upstream business through regional oilfield companies rather than one central field office. Daqing in Heilongjiang is the oldest and best known. Changqing works the Ordos Basin across Shaanxi and neighbouring provinces and is China's largest gas-producing field. Tarim covers the desert basin of southern Xinjiang, and the Southwest Oil and Gas Field produces from the Sichuan Basin, where PetroChina has reported annual gas output above 30 billion cubic metres. Liaohe, Jilin and Karamay (Xinjiang) add older, mature fields. One change matters for anyone writing a site list: long-distance trunk pipelines, gas storage and some LNG terminals were moved out of PetroChina into the separate national pipeline company, PipeChina, under agreements announced in July 2020, with PetroChina keeping a minority stake. A trunk compressor station is therefore now normally a PipeChina site, while PetroChina's own classified areas are the wellsite, the gathering station, the treatment plant, the gas processing plant, the refinery and the product depot.

Units, companies and neighbours

Daqing Oilfield
Songliao Basin, Heilongjiang. Covered on its own page.
Changqing Oilfield
Ordos Basin gas and low-permeability oil, spread over a very large area.
Tarim Oilfield
Xinjiang desert basin; gas gathering and treatment at long distances from towns.
Southwest Oil and Gas Field
Sichuan Basin gas, with hydrogen sulphide present in some reservoirs.
PetroChina refining and petrochemical companies
Including Dalian, Lanzhou, Fushun and Daqing Petrochemical.
CNPC drilling companies
Chuanqing and Great Wall Drilling, among others, work PetroChina wells as contractors.
PipeChina
Separate owner of the long-distance trunk pipelines since 2020.

Classified areas you will meet

Wellsites and flowlines
Zone 1 around wellheads and chokes; Zone 2 across the wider pad.
Gathering and treatment stations
Separators, heaters, tanks and pump areas handling gas and condensate.
Gas processing and sweetening plants
Compressor halls, dehydration and, in Sichuan, acid gas handling.
Drilling and workover rigs
Classified zones that move with the well programme.
Refinery and petrochemical units
Process units, tank farms and loading gantries in the downstream companies.
Product depots and gas stations
Loading racks and forecourts with their own, smaller, classified envelopes.
Administration and camp buildings
Safe areas, where the handset is simply a phone.

What PetroChina's geography does to a handset

PetroChina's fields sit in four very different climates. The area classification decides whether a phone can enter at all; after that it is the desert, the winter or the humidity that decides how long it survives.

IP ratingIP68
Battery4,000 mAh

Distance from the nearest workshop

Many Changqing, Tarim and Karamay locations are a long drive from a town. A damaged or flat handset is not replaced on the same shift, so IP68 sealing and a 4,000 mAh battery matter more here than a headline specification.

Desert dust in the Tarim basin

Fine sand in the south of Xinjiang gets into ports, seams and speaker grilles. The IS-04Z1 is designed to IP68, which is the sealing rating that addresses dust ingress.

Deep winter in the northeast

Daqing and Jilin see long, severe winters. Cold drains lithium cells quickly, so the exact operating temperature range will be stated on the certificate rather than promised in advance.

Humid, hilly Sichuan

The Southwest field sits in terrain where access roads are steep and the air is wet. Sealing against moisture is the practical test there.

Contractors in the same estate

A wellfield workforce mixes company staff and drilling, services and construction contractors. Enrolment in an existing MDM console lets each group's handsets follow its own policy, including switching the camera off where site rules require.

How work is organised

Access, contractors and the approval path at PetroChina

Procurement is split across the regional oilfield companies and the downstream companies, so approval is rarely a single national decision. Drilling and well services are normally carried out by contractor companies working under the operator's permit-to-work system, and refinery turnarounds bring a large temporary workforce into a short window. We have not verified a published equipment-registration programme for handsets at PetroChina and do not claim one here. The practical route is to ask the relevant company's procurement and HSE teams which Ex certificates and supplier documents they accept, and whether a China-registered supplier is required. We are preparing that documentation, with the NEPSI route among the certification work in progress, ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.

Upstream01

Wellfield and gathering rounds

An operator driving a route of wellheads and a gathering station records pressures, photographs a leaking gland and sends the coordinate to the maintenance planner from one handset, instead of returning to the vehicle each time.

Gas processing02

Plant shutdown windows

During a scheduled shutdown at a gas plant, contractor crews arrive in numbers. An enrolled handset carries the permit, the isolation list and the daily report, and can be locked to the applications the operator has approved.

Downstream03

Refinery turnaround communication

A refinery turnaround multiplies permits and crews inside process units. Photographs of completed work and positions of tagged equipment travel with the handset, reducing the paper that crews sign out at the gate.

Questions · PetroChina

Frequently asked questions

Is a trunk gas pipeline compressor station a PetroChina site?

Often not any more. Since the 2020 transfer, long-distance trunk pipelines and related storage sit with PipeChina, so a station on a trunk line is usually PipeChina's to approve. Confirm who owns the specific station before asking for access.

Can the phone detect hydrogen sulphide in a sour gas area?

No. The IS-04Z1 is a communications handset, not a gas detector. Where hydrogen sulphide is present, personal gas detectors remain mandatory and the handset is a separate item that has to meet the area classification on its own.

Which PetroChina company's approval do we need?

The one that owns the site: Daqing, Changqing, Tarim, Southwest, a refinery or a depot each run their own equipment review. Ask the company, not the group, and bring the area classification with the request.

Is the IS-04Z1 certified for PetroChina sites yet?

No. The device is pre-launch, certification is in progress and NEPSI is among the routes being pursued ahead of the Q4 2026 launch. Nothing should enter a classified area before the certificate covering it exists.
