Explosion proof mobile phone for Woodside Energy sites

An explosion proof mobile phone for Woodside Energy in Australia is, in practice, a device for the Burrup Peninsula and the North West Shelf: the Karratha Gas Plant, Pluto LNG, and the offshore platforms and floating production unit that feed them. This page covers what is classified across those assets, what working in the Pilbara coast does to a handset, and what the IS-04Z1 is being certified for. The IS-04Z1 is designed around intrinsic safety rather than a flameproof enclosure.

Explosion proof mobile phone areas at Karratha and the North West Shelf

The North West Shelf Project dates from discoveries made in 1972, and its offshore assets include the North Rankin and Goodwyn platforms, the Angel platform and the Okha floating production unit. Gas comes ashore to the Karratha Gas Plant on the Burrup Peninsula, next to Woodside's Pluto LNG plant, and the two plants are being linked through an interconnector, with Pluto Train 2 and the Scarborough development forming part of Woodside's Burrup Hub plan. The result is plant of several ages on one peninsula, each built to the area classification practice of its day, so the drawings differ from one unit to the next even though the hazard is the same.

What the Pilbara coast does to a handset

Karratha is one of Australia's hottest industrial towns, and the Burrup is exposed to salt air and cyclones. A handset's classification is settled by the drawings. Its working life is settled by the weather.

Heat on an exposed peninsula

Summer temperatures at Karratha are very high, and process plant radiates more. The marking target is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4, and the ambient range on the certificate is what engineers will check.

Salt air and cyclone season

Corrosion and driving rain are normal. IP68 sealing and rugged build are specified for that exposure, and managed handsets can be locked or recovered if the site stands down for a cyclone.

Plants of different ages

A mixed-age plant means different area drawings and permit practices. One handset type with one MDM profile removes a variable even where the sites differ.

A very large footprint

Inspection routes cover two plants and long pipe racks. Four-constellation GNSS and the 50 MP camera give a position and a photograph with each report.

Offshore and onshore on one profile

Android Enterprise management lets Woodside's IT team set policies by group, so offshore and onshore crews can carry the same device type with different settings.

Use cases · Woodside Energy

Where the IS-04Z1 goes to work.

Onshore01

Karratha Gas Plant operator rounds

An operator working through an older train records readings, photographs a defect and calls the control room without surrendering a camera or radio at the gate.

Offshore02

Platform maintenance campaigns

Crews on the North West Shelf work to a permit issued for the day. A managed handset carries the permit, the job pack and the daily report.

Contractors03

Shutdown work at the Burrup

Large shutdown crews arrive for a short time. An enrolled handset can be locked to approved applications and wiped at the end of the contract.

Work pattern and buying

How work is organised, and what buyers ask

Woodside runs the Burrup plants and offshore assets with a large rotating and local workforce plus contractors. The points below should be raised with Woodside's own teams. SAMS makes no claim of any relationship with Woodside.

Rotations
Crews fly in from Perth and elsewhere on rotations, and some live in Karratha. Offshore crews travel by helicopter and vessel, so what travels offshore is limited.
Shutdowns
Planned shutdowns at the Burrup bring in many contractors at once. Ask Woodside whether contractors bring devices or draw from a site pool.
Supplier approval
Woodside's procurement and HSE teams set the requirements. SAMS has not been through any Woodside process; ask them for current equipment documents.
Evidence for the engineer
The IECEx certificate and scope, the ANZEx equivalent and the ACMA RCM radio marking. NOPSEMA oversees offshore safety cases. All in progress ahead of Q4 2026.
Merger history
Woodside combined with BHP's petroleum business in 2022. Documents in the form used by either legacy organisation are likely to be recognisable, though Woodside decides what it needs.
Questions · Woodside Energy

Frequently asked questions

Is the IS-04Z1 certified for use at Woodside sites yet?

No. The device is pre-launch, with IECEx and ANZEx certification in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch. No certificate has been issued.

Does a plant of mixed age matter for a handset?

Area classification drawings differ between older and newer units. The handset's marking and temperature class must be checked against each drawing, not assumed from one.

Does the device work on both Karratha and offshore platforms?

The Zone 1 design target covers gas classified areas in both. Offshore use also depends on the operator's safety case and any marine requirements.

How does a cyclone affect handset management?

Operators stand down sites ahead of cyclones. A managed handset can be locked, tracked or wiped remotely under the operator's own procedure.
