Explosion proof mobile phone for BHP, Pilbara iron ore

Anyone looking for an explosion proof mobile phone for BHP in Australia is really asking about the Pilbara: the Western Australia Iron Ore mines around Newman, the company-owned railway to Port Hedland, and the two port sites at Nelson Point and Finucane Island. This page sets out what is classified along that chain, what the roster does to a handset, and what the IS-04Z1 is being certified for. The IS-04Z1 is designed around intrinsic safety rather than a flameproof enclosure.

Where an explosion proof mobile phone is needed along BHP's Pilbara chain

BHP's iron ore business in Western Australia runs from mines at Mt Whaleback near Newman, and at Area C, Jimblebar and Yandi, along a private railway to Port Hedland, where ore is shipped from Nelson Point and Finucane Island. The Mount Newman main line alone is 426 km, and BHP's Pilbara rail network is more than 1,000 km in total. One point should be stated plainly: iron ore is not a combustible dust, so Zone 21 is not the headline for most of this chain. What is classified is mostly fuel, gas and refrigerant, and where a dust classification does apply it comes from the site's own hazardous area register, not from a general assumption about mining.

Sites and operations

Mt Whaleback, Newman
Large open-cut mine with crushing, screening and train load-out.
Area C, Jimblebar, Yandi
Further mines feeding the same rail system.
Mount Newman main line
426 km of company railway between Newman and the coast.
Nelson Point
Port Hedland car dumpers, stockyards and shiploading.
Finucane Island
Second Port Hedland site, taking ore from Area C.
Newman and Port Hedland
Towns, accommodation and flight links for the roster.

Classified areas and restrictions

Fuel farms and refuelling bays
Diesel for haul trucks, locomotives and light vehicles; classified around dispensing and tank vents.
Workshop and battery charging areas
Hydrogen and solvent vapour where the area assessment finds them.
Gas supply and power plant
Where on-site generation or fuel gas is handled.
Conveyor galleries and transfer houses
Dust classification only where the site has assessed one.
Blast patterns and explosives stores
Governed by radio-frequency rules, not by zone marking.
Offices, camps and control rooms
Outside the classified boundary.

What the Pilbara does to a handset

BHP sets which devices may enter a classified area. The Pilbara decides how long a handset lasts once it is there, and a mine-rail-port chain stresses it in three different ways.

IP ratingIP68
Battery4,000 mAh
Camera50 MP
OSAndroid 16

Heat, glare and sealed-up vehicles

Summer shade temperatures in the Pilbara regularly pass 40 degrees, and a utility vehicle parked in the sun is hotter still. The marking target is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4, and the ambient range printed on the certificate is what the electrical engineer will check first.

Red dust in everything

Fine ore dust and iron-stained sand work into ports and seams. IP68 sealing is the design answer,.

A radio next to a blast pattern

A phone is a transmitter, and site rules on radio frequency near blast loading apply regardless of any Ex marking. Certification for gas areas does not change them, so the IS-04Z1 should be treated as another radio to be controlled under the site blast procedure.

Positions along a railway

Fault reports on a long rail corridor are only useful with a location. Four-constellation GNSS gives a coordinate, and the 50 MP camera records the defect against it.

One fleet across three kinds of site

Android Enterprise and MDM enrolment let one console manage mine, rail and port handsets, with camera policy set per location rather than per model.

Use cases · Pilbara

Where the IS-04Z1 goes to work.

Mine services01

Fuel and workshop rounds

A fuel and lube crew works through refuelling bays and tank farms where vapour is the hazard. One handset carries the job list, a photograph of a leaking hose and a call to the supervisor without a trip back to the cab.

Rail02

Corridor inspection and call-outs

A crew sent to a fault on a remote section of the line needs a position, a photograph and the work order together. The handset replaces a paper permit and a separate GPS unit.

Port03

Shiploader and stockyard maintenance

At Nelson Point and Finucane Island a shutdown brings in contractors beside the resident crew. Enrolled handsets can be locked to the approved applications for the week and wiped when the contract ends.

Work pattern and buying

How work is organised, and what buyers ask

Most of the Pilbara workforce flies in and out on fixed rotations, and contractors join for planned outages at crushing plant, rail and port. That shapes the purchase more than the zone does. The points below are what to raise with BHP's own teams; none of it implies any SAMS relationship with BHP.

Rotations and handover
Handsets that pass between crews need a clean wipe, a charged battery and a known enrolment state. Device-level lock and remote wipe are managed from the MDM console.
Planned outages
Contractor numbers rise sharply at a shutdown. Ask the operator whether contractors bring their own devices or draw from a site pool, because that decides who holds the certificate documentation.
Supplier approval
BHP's procurement and HSE teams set what a supplier must provide. SAMS has not been through any BHP process and will not claim to; ask them for their current equipment and supplier requirements.
Evidence for the engineer
The IECEx certificate and its scope, the ANZEx equivalent, and the ACMA RCM radio marking are what an Australian site engineer works from. All are in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.
Questions · BHP

Frequently asked questions

Is the IS-04Z1 certified for use at BHP's Pilbara operations yet?

No. The device is pre-launch and IECEx certification, with ANZEx from the same test reports, is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch. No certificate has been issued.

Does iron ore dust make Zone 21 necessary at Pilbara sites?

Iron ore is not normally treated as a combustible dust, so Zone 21 is not assumed. The IS-04Z1 is designed for Zone 21 where a site has classified dust, but the hazardous area register for each plant decides, not the mineral.

Can the handset be used near blasting?

Treat it as a radio transmitter. Site blasting procedures restrict transmitters near explosives and detonators, and a gas-area Ex marking does not override them. Ask the site blast controller for the distances that apply.

Does one device suit the mine, the railway and the ports?

That is the design intent: one handset and one MDM profile across all three, with policy differences set in the console. The zone and ambient range at each location still have to match the certificate.
