Coastal LNG plants in extreme heat
Karratha, Onslow, Darwin and Gladstone are hot, humid or salt-laden. The marking target is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4, with IP68 sealing and rugged build for the environment.
Australia's oil and gas sector is built mostly around LNG export, and an explosion proof mobile phone for Australia has to suit three different settings: offshore platforms and floating facilities, coastal LNG plants, and the onshore coal seam gas and Cooper Basin gas fields. This page maps the operators and sites in each, and shows where the IS-04Z1 Zone 1 design target applies. The IS-04Z1 is designed around intrinsic safety rather than a flameproof enclosure.
Launching Q4 2026 · IECEx programme in progress
Western Australia and the Northern Territory hold the offshore-fed LNG plants: Woodside at Karratha and Pluto, Chevron at Barrow Island and Onslow, INPEX at Darwin and Shell's Prelude vessel offshore. Queensland's LNG comes from coal seam gas, taken from thousands of wells across the Surat and Bowen basins to Curtis Island at Gladstone, where QCLNG, GLNG and Australia Pacific LNG each run a plant. Santos operates the Moomba gas plant in the Cooper Basin in South Australia. Refineries and fuel terminals, including Viva Energy at Geelong and Ampol at Lytton, make up the downstream end. The hazard is similar across all of them, but the working patterns are not.
The classification is much the same across the sector. The working pattern is not, and that is what decides which handset features matter at a given site.

Platform and vessel crews fly or sail in on fixed rotations, so devices stay on the facility and are handed from crew to crew. MDM lock and wipe handle each handover.
Coal seam gas fields are spread across large areas. Technicians visit well sites and compressor stations alone. Four-constellation GNSS gives a position and the 50 MP camera records the well.
Worley, Monadelphous and Clough, among others, bring crews to turnarounds. Android Enterprise management lets operators enrol and retire contractor handsets quickly.
Facilities in Commonwealth waters are overseen by NOPSEMA, so a new device type is considered within each operator's safety case, which is the operator's decision.
A planned train shutdown brings hundreds of contractors for weeks. Enrolled handsets carry permits and job packs and can be wiped at the end of the work.
A coal seam gas technician driving between well sites needs a position, a photograph and a call back to the control room from the same device.
On a platform or floating facility, an operator records readings and reports defects without leaving the classified area.
Each operator has its own engineering and procurement process, and there is no single approval route for the sector. These are the points to raise with each company's own teams. SAMS makes no claim of any relationship with any operator named on this page.
No. The device is pre-launch, with IECEx and ANZEx certification in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch. No certificate has been issued.
The hazard is natural gas in both, but field equipment is usually classified differently from a liquefaction train. Each site's drawings decide, and the certificate scope states where the handset may go.
That is the design intent, because both involve Zone 1 gas areas. Offshore use also depends on the operator's safety case.
No. Each runs its own engineering review, though all can refer to the same IECEx certificate.
Tell us the site, the zone and gas group, and roughly how many handsets. The SAMS team replies by email with the datasheet and the certification schedule for Australia. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and certification is in progress, so there is no list price yet; indicative pricing is issued in writing against a stated quantity and site.
Tell us the zone, gas group and operator. We will send the datasheet and the certification schedule for your market.
