Explosion proof mobile phone for Chevron Australia, Gorgon & Wheatstone

An explosion proof mobile phone for Chevron Australia has to work on two very different sites: Gorgon, on Barrow Island, a Class A nature reserve off the Pilbara coast, and Wheatstone, on the mainland at Ashburton North near Onslow. This page covers what is classified at each, how Barrow Island's quarantine rules change what can be carried in, and what the IS-04Z1 is being certified for. The IS-04Z1 is designed around intrinsic safety rather than a flameproof enclosure.

Explosion proof mobile phone areas at Gorgon and Wheatstone

Gorgon has three LNG trains designed for 15.6 million tonnes a year, fed by the Gorgon and Jansz-Io fields. Wheatstone adds two more trains and brings the pair to a combined 24.5 million tonnes of design capacity. Gorgon shipped its first cargo in 2016 and Wheatstone started production a year later. Barrow Island lies about 60 km off the coast and has been a Class A reserve since 1908, which is why the site is run under tight quarantine controls. Inside the fence the classified areas are what any LNG plant has: natural gas, condensate and refrigerant hydrocarbons, with the carbon dioxide injection system adding compression and monitoring points around it.

Facilities by site

Gorgon LNG plant
Three trains, feed gas reception, condensate and storage on Barrow Island.
Gorgon marine and loading
LNG and condensate export facilities and the materials offloading area.
Carbon dioxide injection
Compression, pipework and injection wells for reservoir CO2.
Wheatstone LNG plant
Two trains, domestic gas and storage at Ashburton North.
Onslow
Mainland town and airport serving the Wheatstone roster.
Offshore and subsea
Gas fields tied back to the plants by pipeline.

Classified areas

Liquefaction trains
Gas processing and refrigerant circuits, Zone 1 and Zone 2 depending on the area drawing.
Condensate stabilisation and tanks
Hydrocarbon liquid and vapour around vents and loading.
Flare and vent systems
Areas where release is expected during start-up and trips.
Fuel gas and power generation
Gas turbines and the fuel supply to them.
Wellhead and injection areas
CO2 wells are not flammable hazards themselves but sit beside gas systems.
Accommodation and offices
Outside the classified boundary.

What Barrow Island and Onslow do to a handset

The area classification decides whether a device may be carried in. At Chevron Australia's sites the next questions are whether it can be landed on the island at all and whether it survives a roster of long days.

Quarantine comes before classification

Items going to Barrow Island are checked so that seeds, insects and soil do not reach the reserve. A sealed IP68 handset with no open ports is simpler to clean and inspect, but Chevron's own quarantine team decides what is acceptable, and that is a separate gate from the Ex certificate.

Salt, humidity and wind on the coast

Both plants are on the coast. Corrosion and humidity are daily conditions, and IP68 sealing together with rugged build is aimed at exactly that.

A roster measured in flights

Barrow Island personnel arrive and leave by air, so spare units are not a short drive away. The 4,000 mAh battery is sized for a full shift on the plant.

Locating a fault in a big plant

A three-train plant has a very large pipe rack. Four-constellation GNSS and the 50 MP camera let a field operator send a position and a photograph with the report.

Two sites, one console

Android Enterprise and MDM management allow one device profile across Gorgon and Wheatstone, with camera and application policy set differently where site rules require.

Use cases · Chevron Australia

Where the IS-04Z1 goes to work.

Operations01

Train rounds and gas detection follow-up

A field operator checking a liquefaction train records readings, photographs a leaking flange and calls the control room from one device, without surrendering a radio and a separate camera at the gate.

Turnaround02

Planned shutdown crews

During a train turnaround, contractor crews far outnumber the resident team. A managed handset carries the permit, the isolation list and the daily report, and can be reset when the contract ends.

Environment03

Carbon dioxide system monitoring

Technicians checking compression and injection equipment move between gas systems and CO2 equipment in one walk. A single Zone 1 designed handset avoids changing devices between them.

Work pattern and buying

How work is organised, and what buyers ask

Gorgon and Wheatstone are run by Chevron Australia's own operations organisation with a large contractor workforce alongside it. The notes below are what to raise with Chevron's teams, and SAMS makes no claim of any relationship with Chevron.

Roster and logistics
Barrow Island staff travel by air on a rotation, so equipment stays on the island and is turned round between crews. Wheatstone is reached through Onslow.
Quarantine
Ask Chevron's Barrow Island quarantine team for the current rules on new equipment, cleaning and packaging before any evaluation unit is shipped.
Shutdown planning
Maintenance outages are planned well in advance. A handset evaluation is easiest to fit in a quieter period, not alongside a turnaround.
Supplier approval
Chevron's procurement and HSE teams set the supplier and equipment requirements. SAMS has not been through any Chevron process; ask for their current documents.
Documentation
The IECEx certificate, its scope and the ANZEx equivalent are what site electrical engineers work from. All are in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.
Questions · Chevron Australia

Frequently asked questions

Is the IS-04Z1 certified for Gorgon or Wheatstone yet?

No. The device is pre-launch, with IECEx and ANZEx certification in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch. No certificate has been issued.

Does a handset need separate clearance to go to Barrow Island?

Yes. Quarantine inspection is a separate gate from hazardous area certification, and it applies to everything shipped to the island. Chevron's own team sets the rules.

Does the carbon dioxide system need a different certificate?

The injection equipment sits beside gas systems, so the handset is chosen for the gas classification around it. The certificate states its exact scope, and site procedures for CO2 areas should be confirmed with Chevron's engineers.

Does acceptance at Gorgon carry over to Wheatstone?

Not automatically. The two sites have different logistics and are managed by their own teams, even where Chevron's engineering standards are shared.
