Head-office hub
The Ministry of Oil and SOMO are headquartered in Baghdad, so many contractor and procurement offices sit here even though the large producing fields are in the south and north.
Baghdad is Iraq's capital and the headquarters of the Ministry of Oil and State Organization for Marketing of Oil (SOMO). Hazardous-area work in the city centres on the Daura refinery, run by Midland Refineries Company in the Daura district, plus fuel handling and power-sector sites. Distribution partners for Baghdad are being identified ahead of the Q4 2026 launch of the IS-04Z1.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. Baghdad has no appointed SAMS distributor yet: the IS-04Z1 is pre-launch (certification in progress, no certificate issued, launch planned for Q4 2026), and distributor applications are open.
Current position: certification in progress, nothing issued, launch targeted for Q4 2026. A buyer's engineering review is separate from the certificate. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Baghdad. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.
A short profile of the site and the kinds of classified area that matter for portable equipment.
The Ministry of Oil and SOMO are headquartered in Baghdad, so many contractor and procurement offices sit here even though the large producing fields are in the south and north.
Daura refinery lies in a district on the edge of the city; visits and deliveries to refineries normally need operator-issued permits and advance planning.
Baghdad is the headquarters base of Iraq National Oil Company, the State Organization for Marketing of Oil and Iraqi Airways, so many oil-sector approvals and procurement decisions are taken in the capital.
Umm Qasr port in the south is linked to Baghdad by railway, so heavy equipment often arrives via the south and moves north by road or rail.
Dusty winds called sharqi blow in summer, which is a reminder to choose portable devices with good dust ingress protection.
Summers from May to October are very hot and dry, with temperatures above 46 degrees Celsius, and winters are wetter and cooler, down to around 10 degrees on average.
A rugged phone is built to survive water, dust, drops and rough handling, usually rated by an IP code and a drop specification. Ruggedness is an environmental property: it says nothing about whether a phone may be used where flammable gas or dust is present. That is decided by explosion-protection certification and marking.
The IS-04Z1 combines both: an IP68 sealed rugged build and a design for Zone 1 and Zone 21 (marking target Ex ib IIC T4). The explosion-protection certificates are in progress and none has been issued.
In Baghdad. Summers here are very hot and dry, and handheld devices used outdoors on refinery grounds face real thermal limits. IP68 means the IS-04Z1 is designed to resist dust and water immersion, which helps with fine desert dust and washdown, but it says nothing about explosion protection. Temperature class and zone suitability are separate checks.
Distribution of the IS-04Z1 is by authorised partners only, and SAMS has not yet granted a territory for Baghdad. Each application is reviewed on its merits. Because opening a certified Ex handset in an ordinary workshop invalidates its certificate, the partner must be able to support and service the device locally.
Not yet. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and its certification is still in progress ahead of a Q4 2026 launch. No unit goes into a classified area before the certificate covering it exists. The datasheet, the certification schedule and safe-area evaluation units are available now.
No price is published. While certification is in progress there is no list price and no committed lead time, and a supplier quoting a firm figure for an uncertified Ex handset is promising something it cannot stand behind. Indicative pre-launch pricing is issued in writing against a stated quantity and site.
It is designed to IP68 sealing, with glove-friendly controls. Ruggedness is not explosion protection: that depends on the certificates, which are in progress.
Likely candidates are refinery process units, fuel and lpg storage, pipeline pumping stations. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.
Apply through the distributor page with your company details and the territory you cover. SAMS reviews applications company by company and has not yet granted a territory for Baghdad.
The Communications and Media Commission issues type approval certificates, valid for one year, through a registered local partner. Ask your distributor to confirm the approval for each model.
Temperatures commonly exceed 46 degrees Celsius from May to October. Batteries lose life quickly in vehicles and on open sites, so choose devices rated for high temperatures and avoid leaving them in direct sun.
Yes. Summers are very hot and dry, and thermal limits matter for devices used outdoors. Check the ambient temperature range stated in the certificate once issued, avoid leaving the phone in direct sun and charge only in a safe area. Confirm any limits with the site operator.
