Where an ATEX handset is used in Iraq

Most of the demand sits in Basra governorate, with a second cluster around Kirkuk and a third in the Kurdistan Region that runs on its own registrations and logistics.

Operators and contractors such as Basra Oil Company, Rumaila Operating Organisation and PetroChina need an explosion proof mobile phone they can carry into classified areas at Rumaila, West Qurna and Zubair. The IS-04Z1 is designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 duty there.

Built for local conditions

Built for Iraqi conditions

Basra is one of the hottest inhabited places on earth in July, the crude is sour, and the supply chain is long. Those three facts decide more Iraqi equipment arguments than any specification sheet.

For evaluators in Iraq, the IS-04Z1 explosion proof mobile phone is designed around these points: Extreme summer heat in the south; Sour service as the normal case; Dust storms and fine airborne sand; A replacement is not a short trip; Fewer items across the gate; One managed build for a mixed workforce.

Battery4,000 mAh

Extreme summer heat in the south

Basra sits at the top of the global temperature range through the summer and open plant holds it. The ATEX marking target is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4, and the temperature class is the first figure a safety engineer checks.

Sour service as the normal case

Southern Iraqi crude is sour, and hydrogen sulphide is a routine hazard at degassing stations rather than an exception. Bluetooth pairing lets a personal gas detector and the handset work together instead of filling both hands.

Dust storms and fine airborne sand

Dust events cover the south and the centre for days at a time. IP68 sealing keeps a handset serviceable afterwards, and Zone 21 coverage matters where fertiliser and bulk handling sit next to gas.

A replacement is not a short trip

Between import clearance, site access and camp logistics, a failed device stays failed for a while. A 4,000 mAh battery, a sealed body and rugged build are chosen for exactly that reason.

Fewer items across the gate

Radio, camera, torch and paper folded into one enrolled handset reduces what a crew signs out at the start of a rotation and hands back at the end.

One managed build for a mixed workforce

Android 16 runs the interface in Arabic or English and enrols into your EMM or MDM platform, so a national crew and an international contractor team can be issued the same image under the same policy.

Approvals in Iraq

Certification programme ahead of Q4 2026 launch.

Iraqi imports of regulated goods must carry a Certificate of Conformity issued under the COSQC inspection programme, and the radio needs CMC type approval obtained through a licensed local representative. The technical evidence beneath both is an IECEx Certificate of Conformity. All of it is in progress and none of it is finished.

What your HSE and procurement teams will ask for.

On the import side, Iraq operates a conformity assessment programme run by the Central Organization for Standardization and Quality Control under the Ministry of Planning. Regulated consignments must arrive with a Certificate of Conformity issued by a body COSQC has appointed, and the regulated product list is revised periodically. Radio equipment is a separate approval: the Communications and Media Commission issues type approval through a licensed representative inside Iraq. Beneath both sits the IECEx Certificate of Conformity, the one your Ex authority will actually read. None has been granted.

Site access is decided by whoever runs the asset, and in Iraq that is rarely a single body. The Ministry of Oil and its operating companies each maintain vendor registration and tender prequalification, while the international operating organisations at Rumaila, West Qurna and the gas ventures apply their own contractor HSE standards on top. The Kurdistan Region is a separate exercise again, with its own authorities, operators and import route. Expect to register more than once, and treat certification and registration as two different timetables.

Use cases · Iraq

Where the IS-04Z1 goes to work.

Typical Zone 1 and Zone 21 duty for the IS-04Z1 explosion proof mobile phone in Iraq includes: Degassing station rounds at Rumaila and Zubair; Flare capture plants at Khor Al-Zubair and North Rumaila; Loading and storage at Umm Qasr and Khor Al-Zubair; Field and plant work at Khor Mor, Shaikan and Tawke.

Upstream01

Degassing station rounds at Rumaila and Zubair

An operator moving between wellheads, manifolds and a degassing station has to record a reading and report a defect while carrying gas detection. Four-constellation GNSS attaches a verifiable position to each photograph, which is what turns a note into a work order.

Gas processing02

Flare capture plants at Khor Al-Zubair and North Rumaila

Compressor stations and NGL plants built to capture associated gas are dense, noisy and firmly inside Zone 1. A handset that pairs with hearing protection over Bluetooth and still records a photograph earns its place.

Ports and terminals03

Loading and storage at Umm Qasr and Khor Al-Zubair

Jetties, manifolds and product tankage are classified areas with constant vessel interface. A device that survives a washdown, holds a call from a berth and photographs a damaged coupling closes a job in one visit instead of two.

Kurdistan Region04

Field and plant work at Khor Mor, Shaikan and Tawke

Northern operations run their own logistics, registrations and rotations. Central enrolment and remote wipe let a contractor keep one auditable fleet across both halves of the country instead of two.

How to buy · Iraq

How to evaluate and buy in Iraq

Launch is Q4 2026. Iraq needs the longest planning runway of any market we are opening, so these steps start your registration and evaluation work before certification completes.

  1. 01

Tell us the site, the zone and the operator

Send the area classification, gas group and temperature class for the areas a device would enter, and the operator or operating organisation you work under. We will say plainly where certification stands against your requirement.

  2. 02

Take the datasheet and the certificate schedule

You receive the full specification and a written schedule of the certifications in progress with target dates, which is what an HSE lead needs to start an equipment selection case.

  3. 03

Trial a unit before you commit a fleet

Evaluation units will be offered to Iraqi operators and contractors for handling, glove and enterprise-management trials in safe areas, moving to classified-area pilots once the certificate exists.

  4. 04

Supply through a partner who can clear and support it

Volume supply is planned through an Iraqi partner able to hold the COSQC documentation, clear a consignment and keep spares in the south, with a separate arrangement for the Kurdistan Region.

Questions · Iraq

Frequently asked questions

Asking about a site in Iraq?

Send your site, zone and gas group, and we will answer for your plant rather than in general.

Ask about Iraq →
Can we buy an explosion proof mobile phone from SAMS in Iraq today?

No. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch with a Q4 2026 launch date, and IECEx, ATEX and the Iraqi conformity and type approval steps are all still in progress. We will not put a unit into a classified area before the certificate covering that use has been issued.

What does an explosion proof phone cost in Iraq?

There is no published figure and we will not invent one while certification is running. Iraqi landed cost also depends on the conformity certificate, clearance and who holds the supply. Pre-launch pricing is available on request against a stated quantity and site.

Which zones and gas groups is it designed for?

Zone 1 and Zone 21, gas and dust, with an ATEX marking target of II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4. NEC 500 Class I Division 1 is being pursued in parallel, which matters because a good deal of Iraqi surface facility work is written to the American code.

Is it suitable for sour gas and hydrogen sulphide areas?

An Ex certificate defines where a device may be carried by zone, gas group and temperature class, not by which gas is present. What matters in practice for sour service is that the handset pairs with a personal gas detector over Bluetooth.

Will it be usable in the Kurdistan Region as well as the south?

That is the intention, but the two run on separate registrations, import routes and operator approvals. If your work spans both, tell us at the enquiry stage so the partner arrangements are set up for both rather than retrofitted to one.

How does it get through Iraqi customs?

Regulated goods enter against a Certificate of Conformity issued by a body COSQC has appointed, and the radio needs CMC type approval held by a licensed local representative. Both are part of the launch programme and the Iraqi partner SAMS is appointing will hold them.

Does it support Arabic?

Yes. Android 16 runs the interface in Arabic or English on the same handset and the manual will be issued in both, which is what a mixed national and international crew needs from one build.

How do repairs and battery replacement work in Iraq?

An Ex certified device cannot be opened on site or repaired by a general phone workshop without invalidating its certification. Repair runs through SAMS and the Iraqi partner it is appointing, with pooled spares held in Basra.
