Refinery status
The refinery has been shut and restarted repeatedly since 2025, and NNPC signed a memorandum with Chinese firms in April 2026 on restart plans; confirm current status first.
Warri is an oil hub in Delta State, hosting the Warri Refinery and Petrochemicals at Ekpan and Ubeji, many international oil company offices and a seaport. Chevron's Escravos gas plant and gas-to-liquids plant lie in the western Niger Delta. If you are specifying an intrinsically safe smartphone for Warri, this page covers the markings, the approvals and the current certification status of the IS-04Z1.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. The SAMS IS-04Z1 is the intrinsically safe smartphone covered here for Warri: pre-launch, designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), with certification in progress and no certificate issued.
Status: pre-launch. IECEx, ATEX, UKEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress and no certificate has been issued; launch is planned for Q4 2026. An operator's own vendor approval is a separate step. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Warri. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.
The companies on site and the hazardous-area types a handset is likely to meet there.

Rail, roads, helipads and local jetties all serve the area, and boat transport is common to reach creek sites.
Warri sits on the Warri River, which joins the Forcados and Escravos rivers through Jones Creek in the lower Niger Delta, so creeks and rivers shape how people and equipment reach many sites.
Warri has a tropical monsoon climate with a mean annual temperature of about 26.7 C and roughly 2,770 mm of rain a year, so humidity and water ingress are routine concerns for portable equipment.
A standard-gauge railway of roughly 275 km links the Ajaokuta steel mills to Warri port; the line was officially inaugurated in September 2020 with its terminal at Udu.
Warri is described as one of the main hubs of Nigeria's petroleum industry, with the Warri Refinery and Petrochemicals at Ekpan and Ubeji and many oil company operational offices located close by.
Intrinsic safety limits the electrical and thermal energy in a circuit so that neither a spark nor a hot surface can ignite a gas or dust atmosphere, even when a fault occurs. The ib level, used for Zone 1, tolerates one fault. It is the usual way to make a handheld device that a worker carries continuously through a hazardous area.
The IS-04Z1 is designed on this principle for Zone 1 and Zone 21 (marking target II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4). Intrinsic safety is a design basis, not a certificate: certification is in progress and none has been issued yet.
In Warri. Boat transport is common to reach creek sites, and crews in the western Niger Delta carry equipment on long, mixed road and water routes. A handheld that is intrinsically safe lets them keep checklists, photos and permits in one device at the point of work. That is what the IS-04Z1 is designed for.
A short checklist for anyone writing or reviewing the specification, with the IS-04Z1 status against each point.
Not yet. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and its certification is still in progress ahead of a Q4 2026 launch. No unit goes into a classified area before the certificate covering it exists. The datasheet, the certification schedule and safe-area evaluation units are available now.
No price is published. While certification is in progress there is no list price and no committed lead time, and a supplier quoting a firm figure for an uncertified Ex handset is promising something it cannot stand behind. Indicative pre-launch pricing is issued in writing against a stated quantity and site.
The circuits are designed to limit energy so a spark or hot surface cannot ignite a gas or dust atmosphere, even with one fault (level ib, Zone 1). Certification of that design is in progress.
Likely candidates are refinery process units, gas plants and gas-to-liquids facilities, seaport and jetty fuel handling. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.
Not exactly. Explosion proof is a broad everyday term; intrinsic safety is one protection concept, which limits energy so ignition cannot occur. Flameproof (Ex d) is a different concept that contains an explosion. The IS-04Z1 is intrinsically safe by design.
Access mixes road, river and air. Company yards have helipads, creeks link to the Forcados and Escravos rivers, and the Osubi airport handles scheduled flights. Confirm with the operator which route your visit uses, because carry-on rules for powered devices can differ by transport.
Sea freight typically enters through the Delta Ports facilities at Warri, which handle most import and export cargo, while a rail link to the Ajaokuta steel mills now ends at Udu. Confirm customs clearing, import duty and type-approval needs with a local freight agent before shipping.
Rail, roads, helipads and local jetties all serve the area, and boat transport is common to reach creek sites. Plan device protection against rain and spray, and keep spare charged units. Ask the operator about access and permits.
