Spain: industry on the ground
In 2020 Spain's primary energy came from petroleum (42.3%), natural gas (19.8%), coal (11.6%), nuclear (12%) and renewables (14.3%), so refining, gas and power sites all matter.
The IS-04Z1 is an intrinsically safe Android handset designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21, built for the refineries, chemical parks and LNG terminals from Bilbao to the Campo de Gibraltar. Renewables supplied 46.7% of power consumption in 2021 and Spain was the first country to rely on wind as its top energy source for a full year, so wind and solar construction is a large workload. Distribution partners for Spain are being identified ahead of the Q4 2026 launch of the IS-04Z1.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. Spain has no appointed SAMS distributor yet: the IS-04Z1 is pre-launch (certification in progress, no certificate issued, launch planned for Q4 2026), and distributor applications are open.
Current position: certification in progress, nothing issued, launch targeted for Q4 2026. A buyer's engineering review is separate from the certificate. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Spain. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.
The main operators, industrial areas and sites that the SAMS Spain market guide covers.
In 2020 Spain's primary energy came from petroleum (42.3%), natural gas (19.8%), coal (11.6%), nuclear (12%) and renewables (14.3%), so refining, gas and power sites all matter.
The Port of Tarragona has doubled its bulk-liquid storage area to 36 hectares, holds over 900,000 cubic metres of storage and serves chemical plants through a common pipeline rack, the Dixquimics Rack, with 71 lines.
Algeria is Spain's largest natural gas supplier, and since November 2021 gas has mainly arrived through the Medgaz pipeline, with LNG shipping as a possible supplement, so terminals and entry points are key sites.
Spain had 4.1 GW of coal capacity in December 2021 and consumed 6.5 million tonnes of coal in 2022, with a plan to phase coal out by 2030, so coal-handling sites remain active for now.
Intrinsic safety limits the electrical and thermal energy in a circuit so that neither a spark nor a hot surface can ignite a gas or dust atmosphere, even when a fault occurs. The ib level, used for Zone 1, tolerates one fault. It is the usual way to make a handheld device that a worker carries continuously through a hazardous area.
The IS-04Z1 is designed on this principle for Zone 1 and Zone 21 (marking target II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4). Intrinsic safety is a design basis, not a certificate: certification is in progress and none has been issued yet.
In Spain. Intrinsic safety suits the long walking routes within the complexes at Tarragona, Huelva and Cartagena and the rounds at regasification terminals. A handheld that limits ignition energy lets operators photograph, record and communicate in the area. The complexes are widely separated, so one configured handset per crew is practical.
SAMS is appointing authorised distributors ahead of the Q4 2026 launch. No territory has been granted for Spain yet and applications are reviewed company by company. Because a certified Ex device cannot be opened by an ordinary phone workshop without invalidating its certificate, SAMS looks for partners who can provide competent technical support and after-sales service locally.
No. Nothing can be bought or taken into a classified area today: certification is in progress and launch is planned for Q4 2026. What is available now is the datasheet, the written certification schedule and evaluation units for safe-area use.
No price is published. While certification is in progress there is no list price and no committed lead time, and a supplier quoting a firm figure for an uncertified Ex handset is promising something it cannot stand behind. Indicative pre-launch pricing is issued in writing against a stated quantity and site.
The circuits are designed to limit energy so a spark or hot surface cannot ignite a gas or dust atmosphere, even with one fault (level ib, Zone 1). Certification of that design is in progress.

Apply through the distributor page with your company details and the territory you cover. SAMS reviews applications company by company and has not yet granted a territory for Spain.
Spain is an EU member, so ATEX Directive 2014/34/EU applies to equipment and Directive 1999/92/EC to zoning. Zone 1 and Zone 2 devices should carry CE and Ex markings with Spanish instructions where required. Refineries typically add their own permit-to-work and device registration rules.
Yes, inland and southern summers are very hot and direct sun can raise surface temperatures. Check the maximum ambient rating on the certificate, avoid leaving devices on hot equipment and consider shade or cooling for batteries. Coastal sites also add salt air that affects ports and contacts.
The sheet states Spanish in the file and on the screen, on Android 16. Language packs and keyboard layouts should be confirmed during an evaluation unit trial, together with any site rules your IT team needs to enforce through EMM or MDM.
