Spain: infrastructure
Spain had 4.1 GW of coal capacity in December 2021 and consumed 6.5 million tonnes of coal in 2022, with a plan to phase coal out by 2030, so coal-handling sites remain active for now.
The IS-04Z1 is an intrinsically safe Android handset designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21, built for the refineries, chemical parks and LNG terminals from Bilbao to the Campo de Gibraltar. Algeria is Spain's largest natural gas supplier, and since November 2021 gas has mainly arrived through the Medgaz pipeline, with LNG shipping as a possible supplement, so terminals and entry points are key sites. Distribution partners for Spain are being identified ahead of the Q4 2026 launch of the IS-04Z1.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. Spain has no appointed SAMS distributor yet: the IS-04Z1 is pre-launch (certification in progress, no certificate issued, launch planned for Q4 2026), and distributor applications are open.
Status: pre-launch. IECEx, ATEX, UKEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress and no certificate has been issued; launch is planned for Q4 2026. A buyer's engineering review is separate from the certificate. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Spain. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.
The classified areas, operators and sites below are the ones covered in the SAMS Spain market guide.
Spain had 4.1 GW of coal capacity in December 2021 and consumed 6.5 million tonnes of coal in 2022, with a plan to phase coal out by 2030, so coal-handling sites remain active for now.
Repsol is vertically integrated across exploration, refining, distribution, petrochemicals and power, with subsidiaries including Repsol Petróleo, Repsol Química, Repsol Exploración and Petronor.
Gas for power generation rose 52% in 2022 and total gas demand was 364.3 TWh, so gas-fired power stations and distribution networks have heavy maintenance and expansion work.
REPESA was incorporated in 1948 to build a refinery in the Escombreras valley at Cartagena, so Cartagena is among Spain's oldest refining and chemical locations.
“Explosion proof” is the phrase most buyers use for equipment that may be taken into a classified hazardous area. Strictly, it covers several protection concepts: a flameproof enclosure (Ex d) contains an internal explosion, while intrinsic safety (Ex i) limits electrical energy so that an ignition cannot start. Phones are normally intrinsically safe, because a flameproof handset would be too heavy to carry all shift.
The IS-04Z1 uses intrinsic safety, with a marking target of Ex ib IIC T4, and is designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21. It is pre-launch, certification is in progress and no certificate has been issued.
In Spain. Explosion-proof is the everyday phrase at Cartagena or Tarragona, but the plants combine refining, chemical and regasification areas. Flameproof Ex d suits fixed enclosures, while the IS-04Z1 relies on intrinsic safety to limit the energy of a handheld. A reviewer asks which concept protects the device carried into the area.
Distribution of the IS-04Z1 is by authorised partners only, and SAMS has not yet granted a territory for Spain. Each application is reviewed on its merits. Because opening a certified Ex handset in an ordinary workshop invalidates its certificate, the partner must be able to support and service the device locally.
Not today. Until the certificates are issued the IS-04Z1 stays out of classified areas, and until launch there is nothing to purchase. You can ask for the datasheet and the certification schedule, or book a safe-area evaluation unit.
There is no list price yet. SAMS gives indicative pre-launch pricing in writing, against a stated quantity and site, and does not commit to a lead time before certification completes.
It is intrinsically safe (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), which is the usual way to make a phone for hazardous areas. It is not a flameproof (Ex d) design, and certification is still in progress.
The market guide for Spain covers Tarragona, Cartagena and Escombreras, Huelva, Campo de Gibraltar, among others. Site-level pages are linked below.
Apply through the distributor page with your company details and the territory you cover. SAMS reviews applications company by company and has not yet granted a territory for Spain.
Cartagena's Escombreras valley is among the oldest refinery locations, and Repsol and other operators run refining and chemical sites on the coasts. Details change, so confirm the current site list and each operator's contractor requirements before planning work.
Gas entry points, regasification plants and compressor stations are likely Zone 1 or Zone 2 areas, so check the device's gas group and temperature class against the site's classification drawings. Operators typically also require device registration and induction, so allow time before a shutdown.
It is designed with IP68 sealing and a rugged build for heat, salt and wash-down. The T4 target is judged against the ambient range on the certificate, which is in progress. Check that range against peak August temperatures at your plant before specifying.
