Facility scale
Cenovus reports the upgrader at 81.5 thousand barrels per day and the asphalt refinery at 29.0 thousand barrels per day of crude throughput.
Lloydminster straddles the Alberta-Saskatchewan border and is nicknamed the Heavy Oil Capital of Canada. The local oilfield services base includes drilling rigs, trucking fleets, PC pump shops and specialty manufacturers of oil tanks, sand-handling equipment and flushby servicing units. An intrinsically safe smartphone distributor in Lloydminster would carry the IS-04Z1 to these buyers once certification completes.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. Lloydminster has no appointed SAMS distributor yet: the IS-04Z1 is pre-launch (certification in progress, no certificate issued, launch planned for Q4 2026), and distributor applications are open.
Where things stand: the IS-04Z1 has not launched, and none of its four certification routes has produced a certificate yet. A buyer's engineering review is separate from the certificate. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Lloydminster. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.
A short profile of the site and the kinds of classified area that matter for portable equipment.
Cenovus reports the upgrader at 81.5 thousand barrels per day and the asphalt refinery at 29.0 thousand barrels per day of crude throughput.
Prairie winters are cold enough that battery performance and glove use are practical considerations.
Lloydminster has a humid continental climate bordering on subarctic, with long, cold, dry winters and short, warm summers, so cold performance of devices is a routine concern.
The mayor has said that without the upgrader the city would be under 15,000 people; the 2021 census put it near 32,000 and the oilpatch drew many workers from Newfoundland.
The nearby Lloydminster Upgrader began as the Bi-Provincial Upgrader, with ownership shares held by Canada (31.7 percent), Alberta (24.2) and Saskatchewan (17.5), and is now operated by Cenovus.
The Yellowhead Highway (Highway 16) runs west to east through Lloydminster and Highway 17 follows the provincial border north to south; the city has its own airport but no local public transport service.
Intrinsic safety limits the electrical and thermal energy in a circuit so that neither a spark nor a hot surface can ignite a gas or dust atmosphere, even when a fault occurs. The ib level, used for Zone 1, tolerates one fault. It is the usual way to make a handheld device that a worker carries continuously through a hazardous area.
The IS-04Z1 is designed on this principle for Zone 1 and Zone 21 (marking target II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4). Intrinsic safety is a design basis, not a certificate: certification is in progress and none has been issued yet.
In Lloydminster. Rounds through the upgrader, asphalt refinery, thermal oil production sites and tank storage cover a mix of process and field areas. An intrinsically safe handheld lets operators log readings and photos at the equipment. Work permits and gas testing continue to be controlled by the operator.
A distributor for Lloydminster would carry the IS-04Z1 after certification completes; the Q4 2026 launch is the planning date and no appointment has been made. SAMS reviews applicants one by one and prefers companies with their own Ex-competent technical and service staff, since certified devices must not be repaired outside approved channels.
Not today. Until the certificates are issued the IS-04Z1 stays out of classified areas, and until launch there is nothing to purchase. You can ask for the datasheet and the certification schedule, or book a safe-area evaluation unit.
SAMS has not published a price. Any figure you are offered for an uncertified Ex phone should be treated with caution; written indicative pricing is available for a defined quantity and site.
The circuits are designed to limit energy so a spark or hot surface cannot ignite a gas or dust atmosphere, even with one fault (level ib, Zone 1). Certification of that design is in progress.
Likely candidates are heavy oil upgrader, asphalt refinery, thermal oil production facilities, tank storage. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.
Apply through the distributor page with your company details and the territory you cover. SAMS reviews applications company by company and has not yet granted a territory for Lloydminster.
Heavy oil wells and batteries, tank storage, the refinery with asphalt and distillate processing, and the upgrader are typical. Confirm classified areas for each facility with Cenovus or the relevant operator before bringing devices.
The city is split between two provinces, so provincial rules for occupational safety and permits can differ across the line. Confirm which jurisdiction applies at your worksite and what documentation is required.
Typical areas are the heavy oil upgrader, the asphalt refinery, thermal oil production facilities and tank storage. Each would have its own classification, set by the operator. A device would need to match the zone, gas group and temperature class. Request the area drawings from Cenovus before planning a trial.
