Batam, in the Riau Islands, has a large cluster of shipyards and offshore fabrication yards, concentrated around Tanjung Uncang on the western side of the island. Two thirds of Batam's population are migrants, and Indonesian is the common working language, with Malay widely understood by visiting contractors from Singapore and Johor. An intrinsically safe smartphone distributor in Batam shipyards, Riau Islands would carry the IS-04Z1 to these buyers once certification completes.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. Batam shipyards, Riau Islands has no appointed SAMS distributor yet: the IS-04Z1 is pre-launch (certification in progress, no certificate issued, launch planned for Q4 2026), and distributor applications are open.
For the record, no certificate exists for the IS-04Z1 today. The programme is under way ahead of a Q4 2026 launch. A buyer's engineering review is separate from the certificate. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Batam Shipyard. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.
Who operates there and which kinds of classified area a handset would meet, from the SAMS site research.

Hot, humid equatorial climate with frequent rain.
Citra Shipyard, founded in 2006, runs two Batam yards: a 42 hectare site at Kabil and a 24 hectare site at Kampung Becek, building barges, tugs, tankers and offshore supply vessels.
Batam is an industrial island about 20 km off Singapore's south coast, within a free trade zone in the Indonesia-Malaysia-Singapore Growth Triangle, which makes it a convenient base for marine contractors serving regional yards.
Batam has a tropical rainforest climate with heavy rainfall all year, so yard equipment faces constant humidity and frequent downpours rather than a dry season.
Shipbuilding and electronics manufacturing are the island's main industries, and proximity to Singapore's ports speeds the movement of goods and spare parts to the yards.
Intrinsic safety limits the electrical and thermal energy in a circuit so that neither a spark nor a hot surface can ignite a gas or dust atmosphere, even when a fault occurs. The ib level, used for Zone 1, tolerates one fault. It is the usual way to make a handheld device that a worker carries continuously through a hazardous area.
The IS-04Z1 is designed on this principle for Zone 1 and Zone 21 (marking target II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4). Intrinsic safety is a design basis, not a certificate: certification is in progress and none has been issued yet.
In Batam shipyards, Riau Islands. Shipyard work moves between vessel tank spaces, coating shops and module fabrication areas, often under permit. A handheld designed for intrinsically safe use could carry inspection checklists and photographs into those spaces. That depends on certification and on each yard's acceptance of the device.
Distribution of the IS-04Z1 is by authorised partners only, and SAMS has not yet granted a territory for Batam shipyards, Riau Islands. Each application is reviewed on its merits. Because opening a certified Ex handset in an ordinary workshop invalidates its certificate, the partner must be able to support and service the device locally.
No. Nothing can be bought or taken into a classified area today: certification is in progress and launch is planned for Q4 2026. What is available now is the datasheet, the written certification schedule and evaluation units for safe-area use.
There is no list price yet. SAMS gives indicative pre-launch pricing in writing, against a stated quantity and site, and does not commit to a lead time before certification completes.
The circuits are designed to limit energy so a spark or hot surface cannot ignite a gas or dust atmosphere, even with one fault (level ib, Zone 1). Certification of that design is in progress.
Likely candidates are vessel tank and cargo spaces, paint and coating shops, fuel and gas storage, offshore module fabrication areas. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.
Apply through the distributor page with your company details and the territory you cover. SAMS reviews applications company by company and has not yet granted a territory for Batam shipyards, Riau Islands.
Typical examples are fuel and cargo tank interiors, paint and solvent stores, blasting and coating bays, and hot-work zones on vessels in dry dock. Yards usually control these through gas-free certificates and permits, so confirm how portable electronics are treated.
Batam is close to Singapore and has a free trade zone, so shipping routes are short, but import rules and zone procedures apply. Confirm customs treatment and any requirement for local type approval of radio equipment with your freight agent.
Yes. With a large number of yards, safety rules, permit systems and approved-equipment lists vary, and project clients may add their own. Ask each yard and the project contractor what is required before bringing devices into tank spaces. Confirm with the yard operator.
