Climate
Hot, humid equatorial climate with frequent rain.
Citra Shipyard says it handles about 100 newbuild jobs and 50 repair or restoration jobs a year, including offshore work, which shows the steady tank-entry and hot-work activity typical of Batam yards. Painting, tank cleaning, gas freeing and hot work on vessels and offshore modules create temporary hazardous areas. If you are specifying an IECEx mobile phone for Batam shipyards, Riau Islands, this page covers the markings, the approvals and the current certification status of the IS-04Z1.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026

Hot, humid equatorial climate with frequent rain.
A recruitment-sector analysis puts the number of yards on Batam at roughly 130, so conditions vary from yard to yard.
Batam is an industrial island about 20 km off Singapore's south coast, within a free trade zone in the Indonesia-Malaysia-Singapore Growth Triangle, which makes it a convenient base for marine contractors serving regional yards.
Batam has a tropical rainforest climate with heavy rainfall all year, so yard equipment faces constant humidity and frequent downpours rather than a dry season.
Two thirds of Batam's population are migrants, and Indonesian is the common working language, with Malay widely understood by visiting contractors from Singapore and Johor.
Shipbuilding and electronics manufacturing are the island's main industries, and proximity to Singapore's ports speeds the movement of goods and spare parts to the yards.
IECEx is the international scheme for certifying equipment used in explosive atmospheres. A certificate of conformity is issued by an accredited certification body against a specific edition of the IEC 60079 standards and carries a schedule of conditions of safe use. It is not a legal requirement in most countries on its own, but many national schemes accept it as the technical basis.
The IECEx certificate for the IS-04Z1 is in progress and has not been issued. The marking target is Ex ib IIC T4, the intrinsic safety concept for Zone 1 gas with the hardest gas group (IIC) and a 135 °C temperature class.
In Batam shipyards, Riau Islands. Offshore fabrication on Batam serves international owners and contractors, who frequently ask for IECEx documentation. A certificate of conformity with a schedule of conditions would be the reference. For the IS-04Z1 these are targets rather than issued papers, so no yard should specify against them yet.
A short checklist for anyone writing or reviewing the specification, with the IS-04Z1 status against each point.
Not yet. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and its certification is still in progress ahead of a Q4 2026 launch. No unit goes into a classified area before the certificate covering it exists. The datasheet, the certification schedule and safe-area evaluation units are available now.
No price is published. While certification is in progress there is no list price and no committed lead time, and a supplier quoting a firm figure for an uncertified Ex handset is promising something it cannot stand behind. Indicative pre-launch pricing is issued in writing against a stated quantity and site.
No. The IECEx certificate is in progress and has not been issued. SAMS will publish the number when it exists.
Likely candidates are vessel tank and cargo spaces, paint and coating shops, fuel and gas storage, offshore module fabrication areas. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.
Not exactly. Explosion proof is a broad everyday term; intrinsic safety is one protection concept, which limits energy so ignition cannot occur. Flameproof (Ex d) is a different concept that contains an explosion. The IS-04Z1 is intrinsically safe by design.
They can. Repair and offshore conversion often involve ships that have carried fuel or chemicals, which raises the chance of residual vapours, so gas testing and permit-to-work control are usually stricter. Ask the yard for its tank-entry and hot-work procedures.
Heavy rainfall all year and a tropical rainforest climate mean constant moisture, so devices typically need good ingress protection, sealed charging contacts and regular drying and cleaning. Check the rating and charging method against the yard's safety rules.
Not always, but during painting, tank cleaning, gas freeing or hot work the space is usually treated as hazardous. The yard's gas-free procedure and permit decide. Do not take a non-Ex device into such a space unless the permit explicitly allows it.
