Large cluster
A recruitment-sector analysis puts the number of yards on Batam at roughly 130, so conditions vary from yard to yard.
Batam, in the Riau Islands, has a large cluster of shipyards and offshore fabrication yards, concentrated around Tanjung Uncang on the western side of the island. Painting, tank cleaning, gas freeing and hot work on vessels and offshore modules create temporary hazardous areas. This page explains what to look for in an intrinsically safe mobile phone for Batam shipyards, Riau Islands, and where the IS-04Z1 stands against that list today.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. The SAMS IS-04Z1 is the intrinsically safe smartphone covered here for Batam shipyards, Riau Islands: pre-launch, designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), with certification in progress and no certificate issued.
Where things stand: the IS-04Z1 has not launched, and none of its four certification routes has produced a certificate yet. Operator approval runs on its own timeline. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Batam Shipyard. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.

PT Batamec in Tanjung Uncang was founded in 1986, was acquired by PT Teknologi Global Indonesia in March 2024, and occupies a 97-hectare site with a graving dock and slipways.
Citra Shipyard, founded in 2006, runs two Batam yards: a 42 hectare site at Kabil and a 24 hectare site at Kampung Becek, building barges, tugs, tankers and offshore supply vessels.
Batam is an industrial island about 20 km off Singapore's south coast, within a free trade zone in the Indonesia-Malaysia-Singapore Growth Triangle, which makes it a convenient base for marine contractors serving regional yards.
Batam has a tropical rainforest climate with heavy rainfall all year, so yard equipment faces constant humidity and frequent downpours rather than a dry season.
Two thirds of Batam's population are migrants, and Indonesian is the common working language, with Malay widely understood by visiting contractors from Singapore and Johor.
Intrinsic safety limits the electrical and thermal energy in a circuit so that neither a spark nor a hot surface can ignite a gas or dust atmosphere, even when a fault occurs. The ib level, used for Zone 1, tolerates one fault. It is the usual way to make a handheld device that a worker carries continuously through a hazardous area.
The IS-04Z1 is designed on this principle for Zone 1 and Zone 21 (marking target II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4). Intrinsic safety is a design basis, not a certificate: certification is in progress and none has been issued yet.
In Batam shipyards, Riau Islands. Shipyard work moves between vessel tank spaces, coating shops and module fabrication areas, often under permit. A handheld designed for intrinsically safe use could carry inspection checklists and photographs into those spaces. That depends on certification and on each yard's acceptance of the device.
A short checklist for anyone writing or reviewing the specification, with the IS-04Z1 status against each point.
Not yet. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and its certification is still in progress ahead of a Q4 2026 launch. No unit goes into a classified area before the certificate covering it exists. The datasheet, the certification schedule and safe-area evaluation units are available now.
SAMS has not published a price. Any figure you are offered for an uncertified Ex phone should be treated with caution; written indicative pricing is available for a defined quantity and site.
The circuits are designed to limit energy so a spark or hot surface cannot ignite a gas or dust atmosphere, even with one fault (level ib, Zone 1). Certification of that design is in progress.
Likely candidates are vessel tank and cargo spaces, paint and coating shops, fuel and gas storage, offshore module fabrication areas. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.
Not exactly. Explosion proof is a broad everyday term; intrinsic safety is one protection concept, which limits energy so ignition cannot occur. Flameproof (Ex d) is a different concept that contains an explosion. The IS-04Z1 is intrinsically safe by design.
They can. Repair and offshore conversion often involve ships that have carried fuel or chemicals, which raises the chance of residual vapours, so gas testing and permit-to-work control are usually stricter. Ask the yard for its tank-entry and hot-work procedures.
Heavy rainfall all year and a tropical rainforest climate mean constant moisture, so devices typically need good ingress protection, sealed charging contacts and regular drying and cleaning. Check the rating and charging method against the yard's safety rules.
Not always, but during painting, tank cleaning, gas freeing or hot work the space is usually treated as hazardous. The yard's gas-free procedure and permit decide. Do not take a non-Ex device into such a space unless the permit explicitly allows it.
