Hungary: rules and approvals
Under ATEX, Category 3 equipment may be self-certified by the manufacturer with a technical dossier, while Category 1 and 2 usually involve a notified body, which affects what Hungarian buyers should ask for.
The IS-04Z1 is an intrinsically safe Android handset designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21, built for Hungarian refinery units, polymer plants, pharmaceutical solvent areas and gas installations. Buyers searching for an intrinsically safe cell phone supplier for Hungary can take the datasheet and the certification schedule for the IS-04Z1 now; supply follows certification.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. An intrinsically safe cell phone for Hungary cannot be bought yet: the SAMS IS-04Z1 is pre-launch (certification in progress, no certificate issued), and the datasheet, certification schedule and safe-area evaluation units are available now.
Current position: certification in progress, nothing issued, launch targeted for Q4 2026. An operator's own vendor approval is a separate step. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Hungary. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.

The Arad-Szeged natural gas pipeline connects Romania and Hungary, so border compressor and metering stations belong to the national gas network.
Wanhua-BorsodChem, based at Kazincbarcika in north-east Hungary, produces isocyanates (MDI and TDI), PVC and chlor-alkali products, and is a major chemical employer for plant maintenance and shutdown contractors.
MOL was established on 1 October 1991 as the legal successor of nine members of the National Oil and Gas Trust, which dated from 1957, giving Hungary a long industrial oil and gas history.
Intrinsic safety limits the electrical and thermal energy in a circuit so that neither a spark nor a hot surface can ignite a gas or dust atmosphere, even when a fault occurs. The ib level, used for Zone 1, tolerates one fault. It is the usual way to make a handheld device that a worker carries continuously through a hazardous area.
The IS-04Z1 is designed on this principle for Zone 1 and Zone 21 (marking target II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4). Intrinsic safety is a design basis, not a certificate: certification is in progress and none has been issued yet.
In Hungary. Rounds at Hungarian refineries, crackers and gas compressor stations cover many zones in one shift. In pharmaceutical plants, solvent rooms may be entered many times a day. An intrinsically safe handheld lets staff record readings and checks at the point of work. That is the design intent, pending certification.
Nothing can be bought for Hungary today: the IS-04Z1 is pre-launch, and SAMS will supply end users through authorised distributors once certificates exist. What a buyer can do now is take the specification, ask for the written certification schedule and arrange a safe-area evaluation, so that the right local channel contacts you at launch.
The technical specification, marking target and conditions of use, sent by email.
Which certificates are in progress, in what order, and what is still to be confirmed.
Evaluation units can be used for connectivity, MDM enrolment and workflow testing outside classified areas.

No. Nothing can be bought or taken into a classified area today: certification is in progress and launch is planned for Q4 2026. What is available now is the datasheet, the written certification schedule and evaluation units for safe-area use.
No price is published. While certification is in progress there is no list price and no committed lead time, and a supplier quoting a firm figure for an uncertified Ex handset is promising something it cannot stand behind. Indicative pre-launch pricing is issued in writing against a stated quantity and site.
The circuits are designed to limit energy so a spark or hot surface cannot ignite a gas or dust atmosphere, even with one fault (level ib, Zone 1). Certification of that design is in progress.

Through authorised distributors once certificates exist. Until then SAMS can send the datasheet and certification schedule and arrange safe-area evaluation units.
Hungarian is the working language, and ATEX instructions are typically expected in the language of the destination country. Providing Hungarian instructions with the certificate pack often helps, though international operators may also accept English. Check with the site safety office.
Hungary is an EU member, so ATEX Directive 2014/34/EU applies to equipment and Directive 1999/92/EC to workplace zoning. Zone 1 and Zone 2 devices should carry CE and Ex markings with instructions in the local language. Operators usually add their own permit and registration rules.
ATEX is the usual reference in the EU, and Hungary applies it through national law. Some operators or international contractors also ask for IECEx. Ask the operator's HSE or explosion-protection lead which evidence they accept before ordering.
