Climate
Hot, wet tropical conditions at lowland sites; cooler and very wet in the Papua highlands.
Nickel output reached about 2.2 million tonnes in 2023 and relies heavily on coal-fired power, accounting for around 22 percent of national energy and industrial emissions, so captive coal power plants sit beside many smelters. Fuel storage, coal handling, process plants and smelters create hazardous areas, with dust areas at coal preparation and underground work at Grasberg. This page explains what to look for in an IECEx smartphone for Indonesian mining regions, and where the IS-04Z1 stands against that list today.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. The SAMS IS-04Z1 is the intrinsically safe smartphone covered here for Indonesian mining regions: pre-launch, designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), with certification in progress and no certificate issued.
Current position: certification in progress, nothing issued, launch targeted for Q4 2026. Operator approval runs on its own timeline. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Indonesia Mining. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.

Large operations such as Grasberg, at about 4,100 metres elevation, rely on long supply chains by air, road and sea.
The Indonesia Morowali Industrial Park in Central Sulawesi, the country's largest nickel processing site, covers 2,000 hectares and is served by its own seaport, an airport and a 2 GW coal power plant.
In 2024 Indonesia was estimated to be the world's leading producer of mined nickel at 62 percent of global output, and second for tin at 19 percent and cobalt at 12 percent.
Indonesia holds the world's largest nickel reserves, estimated at 55 million tonnes, and its share of global nickel output rose from 16 percent in 2017 to 54 percent in 2023.
MIND ID is the state-owned mining holding company, and foreign-owned or partly foreign-owned operators include PT Freeport Indonesia, PT Tsingshan Steel Indonesia, PT Huafei Nickel Cobalt and PT Vale Indonesia.
IECEx is the international scheme for certifying equipment used in explosive atmospheres. A certificate of conformity is issued by an accredited certification body against a specific edition of the IEC 60079 standards and carries a schedule of conditions of safe use. It is not a legal requirement in most countries on its own, but many national schemes accept it as the technical basis.
The IECEx certificate for the IS-04Z1 is in progress and has not been issued. The marking target is Ex ib IIC T4, the intrinsic safety concept for Zone 1 gas with the hardest gas group (IIC) and a 135 °C temperature class.
In Indonesian mining regions. Large mining operators with international parents and contractors often work to IECEx documentation. The certificate of conformity and its schedule of conditions would be reviewed alongside the site's own rules. For the IS-04Z1 those are targets, not issued, so they cannot yet support specification.
A short checklist for anyone writing or reviewing the specification, with the IS-04Z1 status against each point.
No. Nothing can be bought or taken into a classified area today: certification is in progress and launch is planned for Q4 2026. What is available now is the datasheet, the written certification schedule and evaluation units for safe-area use.
There is no list price yet. SAMS gives indicative pre-launch pricing in writing, against a stated quantity and site, and does not commit to a lead time before certification completes.
No. The IECEx certificate is in progress and has not been issued. SAMS will publish the number when it exists.
Likely candidates are coal handling and preparation plants (dust, zone 21), fuel and lubricant storage, underground mine areas, smelter and process plant areas. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.
Not exactly. Explosion proof is a broad everyday term; intrinsic safety is one protection concept, which limits energy so ignition cannot occur. Flameproof (Ex d) is a different concept that contains an explosion. The IS-04Z1 is intrinsically safe by design.
Typical examples are underground methane or coal-dust zones, fuel storage and workshops, explosives magazines, smelter and processing areas with gases or dust, and captive power plants. Each operator classifies its own site, so confirm the zones with the mine's safety department.
Yes. Smelters and acid-leach plants emphasise process gases, chemicals and high temperatures, while coal mines emphasise methane and combustible dust. The device choice and the area type differ, so ask each site for its classification and permit rules.
Remote operations rely on long supply chains, so a failed device may take time to replace. Plan spares, local service access and offline-capable apps. Check heat, wet and altitude conditions at each site. Confirm site rules with the operator.
