What “IECEx” means for a smartphone
IECEx is the international scheme for certifying equipment used in explosive atmospheres. A certificate of conformity is issued by an accredited certification body against a specific edition of the IEC 60079 standards and carries a schedule of conditions of safe use. It is not a legal requirement in most countries on its own, but many national schemes accept it as the technical basis.
The IECEx certificate for the IS-04Z1 is in progress and has not been issued. The marking target is Ex ib IIC T4, the intrinsic safety concept for Zone 1 gas with the hardest gas group (IIC) and a 135 °C temperature class.
In Sinopec. Sinopec's refining and chemical complexes work with international technology partners and EPCs, many of whom use IECEx documents. A certificate of conformity with its schedule of conditions gives Sinopec reviewers and these partners a shared reference. The IS-04Z1 is designed for IECEx, still in progress. Typical Zone 1 and Zone 2 areas are found at refineries, ethylene and petrochemical plants, tank farms, loading terminals and fuel stations. Classification is site-specific, so request the area classification drawings from the plant's safety department before choosing handheld devices.
What certification marks do Chinese refineries expect on portable equipment?
Chinese plants commonly expect equipment for explosive atmospheres to hold the national explosion-protection certificate and marking, sometimes alongside international certificates. Confirm with the specific plant which approvals are accepted, and whether an inspection or registration step applies.
What differs between Zhenhai and the Shengli Oilfield for a handset?
Zhenhai is a coastal refinery and petrochemical base with humid salty air, while Shengli is an upstream oilfield in Shandong with colder winters. Their area classifications also differ.
