The term · IECEx
What “IECEx” means for a smartphone
IECEx is the international scheme for certifying equipment used in explosive atmospheres. A certificate of conformity is issued by an accredited certification body against a specific edition of the IEC 60079 standards and carries a schedule of conditions of safe use. It is not a legal requirement in most countries on its own, but many national schemes accept it as the technical basis.
The IECEx certificate for the IS-04Z1 is in progress and has not been issued. The marking target is Ex ib IIC T4, the intrinsic safety concept for Zone 1 gas with the hardest gas group (IIC) and a 135 °C temperature class.
In Abqaiq. Abqaiq is operated by Aramco, with contractors working under Aramco's own safety rules. IECEx is the international scheme a visiting contractor may already know, and its certificate of conformity and schedule of conditions are what a reviewer would read. For the IS-04Z1 these remain targets, not issued documents.

Questions · Abqaiq
Frequently asked questions
Can we buy an IECEx mobile phone in Abqaiq today?
No. Nothing can be bought or taken into a classified area today: certification is in progress and launch is planned for Q4 2026. What is available now is the datasheet, the written certification schedule and evaluation units for safe-area use.
What does an IECEx mobile phone in Abqaiq cost?
No price is published. While certification is in progress there is no list price and no committed lead time, and a supplier quoting a firm figure for an uncertified Ex handset is promising something it cannot stand behind. Indicative pre-launch pricing is issued in writing against a stated quantity and site.
Does the IS-04Z1 hold an IECEx certificate?
No. The IECEx certificate is in progress and has not been issued. SAMS will publish the number when it exists.
Which areas at Abqaiq would use it?
Likely candidates are crude stabilisation units, natural gas liquids facility, utilities units, hydrogen sulphide removal. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.
How do I become a SAMS distributor for Abqaiq?
Apply through the distributor page with your company details and the territory you cover. SAMS reviews applications company by company and has not yet granted a territory for Abqaiq.
How far is Abqaiq from the nearest commercial airport?
King Fahd International Airport at Dammam is about 90 km away. Abqaiq's own airstrip is run by Saudi Aramco and is not open to commercial traffic, so visiting service teams normally fly to Dammam and continue by road under the host's transport rules.
Is a handset used at Abqaiq subject to Saudi radio approval?
Radio equipment supplied in Saudi Arabia is normally covered by Communications, Space and Technology Commission type approval, with certificates renewed periodically. Aramco sites may add their own device rules, so confirm both the national and the site requirement with your client.
Does the Saudi telecoms regime affect a handset?
Telecoms equipment conformity in Saudi Arabia has been handled through the SABER platform of SASO since February 2025, and the Communications, Space and Technology Commission is the telecoms regulator. These are separate from Ex certification. Ask the supplier for both, and check scope with the relevant authority.
