Fabrication in Batam
Offshore units for fields such as Belanak in the Natuna Sea have been fabricated at yards in Batam before sailing out.
Indonesia's offshore oil and gas is spread across the Natuna area, the Java Sea and the Kutai Basin off East Kalimantan, where the Mahakam block is run by Pertamina Hulu Mahakam. Ranai Airport is among the regency's main transport points, so crew changes and urgent spares for offshore gas work would typically move by air and then by supply boat; confirm routes with the operator. This page explains what to look for in a hazardous area smartphone for Offshore Indonesia, and where the IS-04Z1 stands against that list today.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. The SAMS IS-04Z1 is the intrinsically safe smartphone covered here for Offshore Indonesia: pre-launch, designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), with certification in progress and no certificate issued.
Where things stand: the IS-04Z1 has not launched, and none of its four certification routes has produced a certificate yet. A buyer's engineering review is separate from the certificate. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.
| Check | What to look for | IS-04Z1 today |
|---|---|---|
| Zone | 0, 1 or 2 for gas; 20, 21 or 22 for dust | Designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 |
| Gas group | IIA, IIB or IIC | IIC (target) |

| Where it applies | Offshore Indonesia: Wellhead and production platforms, FPSOs and floating production units, Drilling and workover areas | Classified by the site operator |

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Offshore Indonesia. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.

Offshore units for fields such as Belanak in the Natuna Sea have been fabricated at yards in Batam before sailing out.
Heat, humidity and salt spray are constant, and monsoon seasons affect sea state and crew changes.
The Tangguh field in Bintuni Bay, West Papua, was estimated to hold 4.4 trillion cubic feet of proven gas, with annual LNG output expected to reach about 7.6 million tonnes.
Indonesia produced about 450.8 million tonnes of oil equivalent of energy in 2019, and its total primary energy supply rose by nearly 60 percent between 2000 and 2021.
The Arun field in Aceh produced gas from the 1970s and is now largely depleted, and nearby operations included the North Sumatra offshore gas field, with assets passing to Pertamina in 2015.
The Abadi design uses a gas FPSO that treats the gas before sending it by subsea pipeline to an onshore LNG plant with two trains, and captured CO2 is to be reinjected into the well.
A hazardous area is a place where flammable gas, vapour or combustible dust may be present. Standards divide these into zones: Zones 0, 1 and 2 for gas and vapour, and Zones 20, 21 and 22 for dust. Zone 1 and Zone 21 are the tier where an explosive atmosphere is likely to occur in normal operation, which is where the IS-04Z1 is designed to work. Anything carried in must be marked for the zone, gas group and temperature class of the area.
No certificate has been issued for the IS-04Z1 yet, so it must not be taken into a classified area until the certificate covering it exists and the site operator has accepted it.
In Offshore Indonesia. Wellhead and production platforms, FPSOs and floating production units, drilling and workover areas and gas processing modules are the hazardous areas here. Operators such as Pertamina Hulu Mahakam classify them, not SAMS. Ask for the specific asset's drawings.
A short checklist for anyone writing or reviewing the specification, with the IS-04Z1 status against each point.
No. Nothing can be bought or taken into a classified area today: certification is in progress and launch is planned for Q4 2026. What is available now is the datasheet, the written certification schedule and evaluation units for safe-area use.
No price is published. While certification is in progress there is no list price and no committed lead time, and a supplier quoting a firm figure for an uncertified Ex handset is promising something it cannot stand behind. Indicative pre-launch pricing is issued in writing against a stated quantity and site.
Zone 1 and Zone 21 (gas and dust) with gas group IIC and temperature class T4, subject to certification. It must not be used in a classified area before its certificate is issued and the site has accepted it.
Likely candidates are wellhead and production platforms, fpsos and floating production units, drilling and workover areas, gas processing modules. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.
Not exactly. Explosion proof is a broad everyday term; intrinsic safety is one protection concept, which limits energy so ignition cannot occur. Flameproof (Ex d) is a different concept that contains an explosion. The IS-04Z1 is intrinsically safe by design.
Usually yes for classified areas. Operators normally require equipment certified for the zone, gas group and temperature class of the location, supported by a permit to work. Confirm the exact certification marks the platform accepts for portable devices.
Indonesian is the national language and Malay is widely spoken in areas such as Natuna, while operators typically run safety briefings in English as well. Check that device interfaces and any emergency procedures can be used in the languages your crew needs.
Heat, humidity and salt spray are constant, and monsoon seasons affect sea state and crew changes. Check seals, ports and charging contacts for corrosion. IP68 is useful but is not explosion protection. Confirm approved devices with the operator.
