Fabrication in Batam
Offshore units for fields such as Belanak in the Natuna Sea have been fabricated at yards in Batam before sailing out.
Indonesia's offshore oil and gas is spread across the Natuna area, the Java Sea and the Kutai Basin off East Kalimantan, where the Mahakam block is run by Pertamina Hulu Mahakam. Indonesia produced about 450.8 million tonnes of oil equivalent of energy in 2019, and its total primary energy supply rose by nearly 60 percent between 2000 and 2021. This page explains what to look for in an explosion proof mobile phone for Offshore Indonesia, and where the IS-04Z1 stands against that list today.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. The SAMS IS-04Z1 is the intrinsically safe smartphone covered here for Offshore Indonesia: pre-launch, designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), with certification in progress and no certificate issued.
Status: pre-launch. IECEx, ATEX, UKEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress and no certificate has been issued; launch is planned for Q4 2026. Operator approval runs on its own timeline. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Offshore Indonesia. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.
Who operates there and which kinds of classified area a handset would meet, from the SAMS site research.

Heat, humidity and salt spray are constant, and monsoon seasons affect sea state and crew changes.
Ranai Airport is among the regency's main transport points, so crew changes and urgent spares for offshore gas work would typically move by air and then by supply boat; confirm routes with the operator.
INPEX operates the offshore Masela block's Abadi gas project with 65%, alongside Pertamina at 20% and Petronas at 15%, targeting about 9.5 million tonnes of LNG a year and up to 35,000 barrels of condensate a day.
Natuna had about 84,900 inhabitants in 2025, around 80 percent of Malay origin, and Indonesian and local Malay are the main languages, which helps visiting crews working with local contractors.
Natuna Regency, the northernmost part of Riau Islands Province, has only 1,984 sq km of land within a total area of about 264,198 sq km, so almost all of it is open sea.
“Explosion proof” is the phrase most buyers use for equipment that may be taken into a classified hazardous area. Strictly, it covers several protection concepts: a flameproof enclosure (Ex d) contains an internal explosion, while intrinsic safety (Ex i) limits electrical energy so that an ignition cannot start. Phones are normally intrinsically safe, because a flameproof handset would be too heavy to carry all shift.
The IS-04Z1 uses intrinsic safety, with a marking target of Ex ib IIC T4, and is designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21. It is pre-launch, certification is in progress and no certificate has been issued.
In Offshore Indonesia. On wellhead platforms, FPSOs and gas processing modules, explosion-proof is shorthand. Flameproof Ex d guards fixed motors and enclosures, while a handheld used on drilling and workover decks relies on intrinsic safety. The operator's drawings decide which concept is accepted where.
A short checklist for anyone writing or reviewing the specification, with the IS-04Z1 status against each point.
Not today. Until the certificates are issued the IS-04Z1 stays out of classified areas, and until launch there is nothing to purchase. You can ask for the datasheet and the certification schedule, or book a safe-area evaluation unit.
No price is published. While certification is in progress there is no list price and no committed lead time, and a supplier quoting a firm figure for an uncertified Ex handset is promising something it cannot stand behind. Indicative pre-launch pricing is issued in writing against a stated quantity and site.
It is intrinsically safe (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), which is the usual way to make a phone for hazardous areas. It is not a flameproof (Ex d) design, and certification is still in progress.
Likely candidates are wellhead and production platforms, fpsos and floating production units, drilling and workover areas, gas processing modules. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.
Not exactly. Explosion proof is a broad everyday term; intrinsic safety is one protection concept, which limits energy so ignition cannot occur. Flameproof (Ex d) is a different concept that contains an explosion. The IS-04Z1 is intrinsically safe by design.
Usually yes for classified areas. Operators normally require equipment certified for the zone, gas group and temperature class of the location, supported by a permit to work. Confirm the exact certification marks the platform accepts for portable devices.
Indonesian is the national language and Malay is widely spoken in areas such as Natuna, while operators typically run safety briefings in English as well. Check that device interfaces and any emergency procedures can be used in the languages your crew needs.
Heat, humidity and salt spray are constant, and monsoon seasons affect sea state and crew changes. Check seals, ports and charging contacts for corrosion. IP68 is useful but is not explosion protection. Confirm approved devices with the operator.
