Facility scale
Cenovus reports the upgrader at 81.5 thousand barrels per day and the asphalt refinery at 29.0 thousand barrels per day of crude throughput.
Lloydminster straddles the Alberta-Saskatchewan border and is nicknamed the Heavy Oil Capital of Canada. The Cenovus Lloydminster Refinery (formerly Husky) processes 29,000 barrels per day and is Canada's largest asphalt supplier, producing about 30 grades of road asphalt at roughly 13,400 b/d. This page explains what to look for in a hazardous area smartphone for Lloydminster, and where the IS-04Z1 stands against that list today.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. The SAMS IS-04Z1 is the intrinsically safe smartphone covered here for Lloydminster: pre-launch, designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), with certification in progress and no certificate issued.
For the record, no certificate exists for the IS-04Z1 today. The programme is under way ahead of a Q4 2026 launch. A buyer's engineering review is separate from the certificate. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Lloydminster. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.
Who operates there and which kinds of classified area a handset would meet, from the SAMS site research.
Cenovus reports the upgrader at 81.5 thousand barrels per day and the asphalt refinery at 29.0 thousand barrels per day of crude throughput.
Prairie winters are cold enough that battery performance and glove use are practical considerations.
Lloydminster straddles the Alberta and Saskatchewan border along the Fourth Meridian (50th Avenue) and is known as the Heavy Oil Capital of Canada; the whole city uses Alberta Time.
Cenovus relies on thousands of workers across oil production, pipeline, storage and refinery operations in the Lloydminster region, offering a large contractor base.
Lloydminster has a humid continental climate bordering on subarctic, with long, cold, dry winters and short, warm summers, so cold performance of devices is a routine concern.
The local oilfield services base includes drilling rigs, trucking fleets, PC pump shops and specialty manufacturers of oil tanks, sand-handling equipment and flushby servicing units.
A hazardous area is a place where flammable gas, vapour or combustible dust may be present. Standards divide these into zones: Zones 0, 1 and 2 for gas and vapour, and Zones 20, 21 and 22 for dust. Zone 1 and Zone 21 are the tier where an explosive atmosphere is likely to occur in normal operation, which is where the IS-04Z1 is designed to work. Anything carried in must be marked for the zone, gas group and temperature class of the area.
No certificate has been issued for the IS-04Z1 yet, so it must not be taken into a classified area until the certificate covering it exists and the site operator has accepted it.
In Lloydminster. Classified areas include the heavy oil upgrader, the asphalt refinery, thermal oil production facilities and tank storage. Cenovus classifies them. Because the city straddles the Alberta-Saskatchewan border, work may fall under either province's rules, and SAMS does not classify areas, so ask the operator for its documents.
A short checklist for anyone writing or reviewing the specification, with the IS-04Z1 status against each point.
No. Nothing can be bought or taken into a classified area today: certification is in progress and launch is planned for Q4 2026. What is available now is the datasheet, the written certification schedule and evaluation units for safe-area use.
There is no list price yet. SAMS gives indicative pre-launch pricing in writing, against a stated quantity and site, and does not commit to a lead time before certification completes.
Zone 1 and Zone 21 (gas and dust) with gas group IIC and temperature class T4, subject to certification. It must not be used in a classified area before its certificate is issued and the site has accepted it.
Likely candidates are heavy oil upgrader, asphalt refinery, thermal oil production facilities, tank storage. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.
Not exactly. Explosion proof is a broad everyday term; intrinsic safety is one protection concept, which limits energy so ignition cannot occur. Flameproof (Ex d) is a different concept that contains an explosion. The IS-04Z1 is intrinsically safe by design.
Long, cold, dry winters reduce battery life and stiffen cables, so use devices rated for low temperatures and keep spares warm. Confirm operator guidance on equipment in classified outdoor areas.
Heavy oil and asphalt are less volatile, but diluent, gas and heated tanks can still create classified areas. Request the facility's classification drawing and choose devices for the stated gas group and temperature class.
The provincial boundary runs through the city, which is a single municipality, so work may fall under either Alberta or Saskatchewan rules. Alberta uses the Safety Codes system with CSA C22.1. The Saskatchewan regulator has not been checked here, so ask the operator which rules govern the specific facility.
