Batam, in the Riau Islands, has a large cluster of shipyards and offshore fabrication yards, concentrated around Tanjung Uncang on the western side of the island. Citra Shipyard says it handles about 100 newbuild jobs and 50 repair or restoration jobs a year, including offshore work, which shows the steady tank-entry and hot-work activity typical of Batam yards. If you are specifying a hazardous area smartphone for Batam shipyards, Riau Islands, this page covers the markings, the approvals and the current certification status of the IS-04Z1.

Hot, humid equatorial climate with frequent rain.
Batam is a free trade zone under a 2007 law with a 70-year term, and BP Batam manages the industrial complex and land, so yard investors deal with that authority as well as national regulators.
Batam has five ferry terminals, Harbour Bay, Nongsapura, Sekupang, Waterfront City and Batam Centre, with ferries linking the island to Singapore, Bintan and Johor Bahru in Malaysia.
Citra Shipyard, founded in 2006, runs two Batam yards: a 42 hectare site at Kabil and a 24 hectare site at Kampung Becek, building barges, tugs, tankers and offshore supply vessels.
Batam is an industrial island about 20 km off Singapore's south coast, within a free trade zone in the Indonesia-Malaysia-Singapore Growth Triangle, which makes it a convenient base for marine contractors serving regional yards.
A hazardous area is a place where flammable gas, vapour or combustible dust may be present. Standards divide these into zones: Zones 0, 1 and 2 for gas and vapour, and Zones 20, 21 and 22 for dust. Zone 1 and Zone 21 are the tier where an explosive atmosphere is likely to occur in normal operation, which is where the IS-04Z1 is designed to work. Anything carried in must be marked for the zone, gas group and temperature class of the area.
No certificate has been issued for the IS-04Z1 yet, so it must not be taken into a classified area until the certificate covering it exists and the site operator has accepted it.
In Batam shipyards, Riau Islands. Hazardous areas in a yard are often temporary: vessel tank and cargo spaces during painting, tank cleaning, gas freeing and hot work, plus fixed fuel and gas stores. The yard or its project contractor classifies them for each job. SAMS does not classify any space.
A short checklist for anyone writing or reviewing the specification, with the IS-04Z1 status against each point.
Not yet. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and its certification is still in progress ahead of a Q4 2026 launch. No unit goes into a classified area before the certificate covering it exists. The datasheet, the certification schedule and safe-area evaluation units are available now.
There is no list price yet. SAMS gives indicative pre-launch pricing in writing, against a stated quantity and site, and does not commit to a lead time before certification completes.
Zone 1 and Zone 21 (gas and dust) with gas group IIC and temperature class T4, subject to certification. It must not be used in a classified area before its certificate is issued and the site has accepted it.
Likely candidates are vessel tank and cargo spaces, paint and coating shops, fuel and gas storage, offshore module fabrication areas. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.
Not exactly. Explosion proof is a broad everyday term; intrinsic safety is one protection concept, which limits energy so ignition cannot occur. Flameproof (Ex d) is a different concept that contains an explosion. The IS-04Z1 is intrinsically safe by design.
They can. Repair and offshore conversion often involve ships that have carried fuel or chemicals, which raises the chance of residual vapours, so gas testing and permit-to-work control are usually stricter. Ask the yard for its tank-entry and hot-work procedures.
Heavy rainfall all year and a tropical rainforest climate mean constant moisture, so devices typically need good ingress protection, sealed charging contacts and regular drying and cleaning. Check the rating and charging method against the yard's safety rules.
Not always, but during painting, tank cleaning, gas freeing or hot work the space is usually treated as hazardous. The yard's gas-free procedure and permit decide. Do not take a non-Ex device into such a space unless the permit explicitly allows it.
