Great Lakes climate
Lake Huron moderates the humid continental climate, so temperature extremes are smaller than on the prairies.
A petroleum industry was established around Sarnia in 1858, and in 1942 Polymer Corporation made synthetic rubber there during World War II, cementing the city's role as a petrochemical centre. Imperial Oil, Suncor and Shell run refineries, alongside chemical producers, so process and storage areas are classified. A hazardous area smartphone distributor in Sarnia (Chemical Valley) would carry the IS-04Z1 to these buyers once certification completes.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Sarnia Refinery. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.
A short profile of the site and the kinds of classified area that matter for portable equipment.
Lake Huron moderates the humid continental climate, so temperature extremes are smaller than on the prairies.
The industry occupies a compact area near the St. Clair River, so contractors move between neighbouring sites.
In May 2024 a federal interim order under the Canadian Environmental Protection Act required Sarnia petrochemical facilities above a benzene fence-line threshold to use vapour control, including closed vent systems on certain benzene storage tanks.
Lake Huron moderates Sarnia's humid continental climate, reducing temperature extremes, though lake-effect snow occurs when Arctic air crosses the lake in winter.
Sarnia Harbour handles lake freighters under the Blue Water Bridge, and its grain elevator, built in 1927 after dredging, is among the larger operating in Canada.
Chemical Valley and the surrounding area contain 62 chemical facilities and refineries, a dense concentration of hazardous process plant in one small city on the St. Clair River.
A hazardous area is a place where flammable gas, vapour or combustible dust may be present. Standards divide these into zones: Zones 0, 1 and 2 for gas and vapour, and Zones 20, 21 and 22 for dust. Zone 1 and Zone 21 are the tier where an explosive atmosphere is likely to occur in normal operation, which is where the IS-04Z1 is designed to work. Anything carried in must be marked for the zone, gas group and temperature class of the area.
No certificate has been issued for the IS-04Z1 yet, so it must not be taken into a classified area until the certificate covering it exists and the site operator has accepted it.
In Sarnia (Chemical Valley). Classified areas include refinery process units, petrochemical plants, product storage and loading, and pipeline terminals. Each operator classifies its own areas, so the picture differs between neighbouring plants. SAMS does not classify areas. A specifier should request area data from every site rather than assuming one set covers the cluster.
A distributor for Sarnia (Chemical Valley) would carry the IS-04Z1 after certification completes; the Q4 2026 launch is the planning date and no appointment has been made. SAMS reviews applicants one by one and prefers companies with their own Ex-competent technical and service staff, since certified devices must not be repaired outside approved channels.
No. Nothing can be bought or taken into a classified area today: certification is in progress and launch is planned for Q4 2026. What is available now is the datasheet, the written certification schedule and evaluation units for safe-area use.
No price is published. While certification is in progress there is no list price and no committed lead time, and a supplier quoting a firm figure for an uncertified Ex handset is promising something it cannot stand behind. Indicative pre-launch pricing is issued in writing against a stated quantity and site.
Zone 1 and Zone 21 (gas and dust) with gas group IIC and temperature class T4, subject to certification. It must not be used in a classified area before its certificate is issued and the site has accepted it.
Likely candidates are refinery process units, petrochemical plants, product storage and loading, pipeline terminals. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.
Apply through the distributor page with your company details and the territory you cover. SAMS reviews applications company by company and has not yet granted a territory for Sarnia (Chemical Valley).
It is the cluster of refineries and chemical plants south of downtown Sarnia. Typical hazards include flammable liquids, gases and some toxic substances, so classified areas and gas detection are common. Confirm each plant's zone drawings before bringing devices.
Usually only in permitted non-classified areas or with certified devices in classified ones, and plants set their own rules at induction. Confirm requirements with the specific operator.
Wikipedia puts the cluster at around 60 facilities, including refineries and petrochemical plants near the St. Clair River. Large pipelines bring Alberta crude oil to Sarnia. The mix of owners means area classification and procurement differ between sites, so ask each operator for its own data.
