Further construction
Petrobras has announced base-oil, diesel and jet fuel units for the complex and a link with Reduc; these are plans, so work may be under construction.
The Boaventura Energy Complex at Itaborai, Rio de Janeiro state, is the former Comperj petrochemical project. The Rio de Janeiro Petrochemical Complex (Comperj) in Itaborai was built by Petrobras on about 45 km2 of land, making it the company's largest single enterprise and one of the largest industrial sites in the world. If you are specifying a hazardous area mobile phone for Itaborai (Boaventura Energy Complex, formerly Comperj), this page covers the markings, the approvals and the current certification status of the IS-04Z1.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. The SAMS IS-04Z1 is the intrinsically safe smartphone covered here for Itaborai (Boaventura Energy Complex, formerly Comperj): pre-launch, designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), with certification in progress and no certificate issued.
Status: pre-launch. IECEx, ATEX, UKEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress and no certificate has been issued; launch is planned for Q4 2026. Operator approval runs on its own timeline. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Itaborai Petrochemical. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.

Itaborai lies east of Guanabara Bay and is linked to Niteroi by road.
Original plans described two refineries and a petrochemical plant with a 2.8 billion pound per year ethylene unit, polyethylene at 960,000 t/y and polypropylene at 900,000 t/y, plus an aromatics area.
Part of the 19,508 hectare Bacia do Rio Macacu protection area and the Guanabara Ecological Station lie within the municipality, so environmental permitting is a standing factor for site work.
The aromatics section of the original design included butadiene at 154,000 t/y, styrene at 400,000 t/y and benzene at 355,000 t/y, so flammable liquids and vapours were central to the plan.
The site has since been re-profiled and appears in project listings as the Boaventura Energy Complex (formerly Comperj and Polo GasLub), with oil refining, ethylene, propylene and bioethanol among its topics.
A hazardous area is a place where flammable gas, vapour or combustible dust may be present. Standards divide these into zones: Zones 0, 1 and 2 for gas and vapour, and Zones 20, 21 and 22 for dust. Zone 1 and Zone 21 are the tier where an explosive atmosphere is likely to occur in normal operation, which is where the IS-04Z1 is designed to work. Anything carried in must be marked for the zone, gas group and temperature class of the area.
No certificate has been issued for the IS-04Z1 yet, so it must not be taken into a classified area until the certificate covering it exists and the site operator has accepted it.
In Itaborai (Boaventura Energy Complex, formerly Comperj). Classified areas here include the natural gas processing unit, the gas pipeline receiving area, LPG and C5+ product handling, and planned refining and lubricant units. Petrobras classifies them; SAMS does not. Some units are announced rather than built, so classification will evolve.
A short checklist for anyone writing or reviewing the specification, with the IS-04Z1 status against each point.
Not yet. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and its certification is still in progress ahead of a Q4 2026 launch. No unit goes into a classified area before the certificate covering it exists. The datasheet, the certification schedule and safe-area evaluation units are available now.
There is no list price yet. SAMS gives indicative pre-launch pricing in writing, against a stated quantity and site, and does not commit to a lead time before certification completes.
Zone 1 and Zone 21 (gas and dust) with gas group IIC and temperature class T4, subject to certification. It must not be used in a classified area before its certificate is issued and the site has accepted it.
Likely candidates are natural gas processing unit, gas pipeline receiving area, lpg and c5+ product handling, planned refining and lubricant units. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.
Not exactly. Explosion proof is a broad everyday term; intrinsic safety is one protection concept, which limits energy so ignition cannot occur. Flameproof (Ex d) is a different concept that contains an explosion. The IS-04Z1 is intrinsically safe by design.
It mainly affects environmental permitting rather than device choice, since parts of the municipality lie in the Macacu river basin protection area. For instruments, the site's permit conditions and spill-prevention rules are the practical guide, so ask the HSE team.
Typically cracker, polymer, aromatics and tank farm areas, with gas groups from IIA through IIC where hydrogen is present. The operator's classification drawings define zones and temperature classes, so ask for them before choosing mobile devices.
The site processes rich gas into natural gas, LPG and C5+, so light hydrocarbons are present. Check that the gas group and temperature class on the label suit the operator's classification of each unit. Do not assume a single marking covers every area.
