Pre-salt gas
The site receives rich gas that is processed into natural gas, LPG and C5+ for the petrochemical and fuel markets.
The Boaventura Energy Complex at Itaborai, Rio de Janeiro state, is the former Comperj petrochemical project. Its gas processing unit, fed by the 355 km Rota 3 pipeline from the Santos Basin pre-salt, has operated commercially since November 2024 and reached 21 million cubic metres a day of capacity with a second train in May 2025. Distribution partners for Itaborai (Boaventura Energy Complex, formerly Comperj) are being identified ahead of the Q4 2026 launch of the IS-04Z1.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. Itaborai (Boaventura Energy Complex, formerly Comperj) has no appointed SAMS distributor yet: the IS-04Z1 is pre-launch (certification in progress, no certificate issued, launch planned for Q4 2026), and distributor applications are open.
Where things stand: the IS-04Z1 has not launched, and none of its four certification routes has produced a certificate yet. An operator's own vendor approval is a separate step. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Itaborai Petrochemical. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.
A short profile of the site and the kinds of classified area that matter for portable equipment.
The site receives rich gas that is processed into natural gas, LPG and C5+ for the petrochemical and fuel markets.
Petrobras has announced base-oil, diesel and jet fuel units for the complex and a link with Reduc; these are plans, so work may be under construction.
Itaborai has been one of the fastest-growing economies in the Rio de Janeiro metropolitan area since the mid-2000s, linked to the chemical and petroleum industries and related construction.
Comperj's refining unit has a processing capacity of 165,000 barrels of oil a day, and it was initially planned to run heavy oil from the Marlim field in the Campos Basin.
Original plans described two refineries and a petrochemical plant with a 2.8 billion pound per year ethylene unit, polyethylene at 960,000 t/y and polypropylene at 900,000 t/y, plus an aromatics area.
Part of the 19,508 hectare Bacia do Rio Macacu protection area and the Guanabara Ecological Station lie within the municipality, so environmental permitting is a standing factor for site work.
“Ex-proof” is shorthand for equipment carrying an explosion-protection marking (the Ex mark) that matches the area it enters. The marking states the protection concept, gas or dust group and temperature class, and it must be backed by a certificate issued by a recognised body, so a phone described as Ex-proof should come with a certificate number you can check.
The IS-04Z1 is designed to carry the marking II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4. That is a target: certification is in progress, no certificate has been issued, and SAMS will publish the certificate numbers when they exist.
In Itaborai (Boaventura Energy Complex, formerly Comperj). With gas, LPG and C5+ handling, a marking check here should look closely at gas group and temperature class for light hydrocarbons, after confirming zone suitability. The IS-04Z1 target marking II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4 is not yet certified, and the operator decides what is acceptable.
A distributor for Itaborai (Boaventura Energy Complex, formerly Comperj) would carry the IS-04Z1 after certification completes; the Q4 2026 launch is the planning date and no appointment has been made. SAMS reviews applicants one by one and prefers companies with their own Ex-competent technical and service staff, since certified devices must not be repaired outside approved channels.
No. Nothing can be bought or taken into a classified area today: certification is in progress and launch is planned for Q4 2026. What is available now is the datasheet, the written certification schedule and evaluation units for safe-area use.
No price is published. While certification is in progress there is no list price and no committed lead time, and a supplier quoting a firm figure for an uncertified Ex handset is promising something it cannot stand behind. Indicative pre-launch pricing is issued in writing against a stated quantity and site.
The marking target is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4. It becomes a marking only when the certificate is issued; until then it is a design target.
Likely candidates are natural gas processing unit, gas pipeline receiving area, lpg and c5+ product handling, planned refining and lubricant units. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.
Apply through the distributor page with your company details and the territory you cover. SAMS reviews applications company by company and has not yet granted a territory for Itaborai (Boaventura Energy Complex, formerly Comperj).
Project listings show the complex has changed scope and name more than once, and published information is dated. Treat any schedule as indicative and confirm current status, contractors and induction requirements with Petrobras or its main contractors before planning equipment.
By road via the Niteroi-Manilha highway and the Sao Goncalo to Rio route, with Rio's airport relatively close. Construction-era sites often run staff buses and gate inductions, so confirm transport and device carry rules with the contractor.
The sheet treats the base-oil, diesel and jet fuel units as plans, so work may be under construction and classification may not be final. Ask Petrobras what applies to each unit. Confirm documentation requirements with the site operator and its HSE team.
