Wildfire history
The May 2016 wildfire forced the evacuation of about 88,000 people and halted production at facilities north of the city.
Fort McMurray in northern Alberta is the commercial and administrative centre of the Athabasca oil sands. The Athabasca oil sands, around Fort McMurray, belong to oil-sand deposits that lie under about 141,000 square kilometres of boreal forest and muskeg in northern Alberta. This page explains what to look for in a hazardous area mobile phone for Fort McMurray, and where the IS-04Z1 stands against that list today.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. The SAMS IS-04Z1 is the intrinsically safe smartphone covered here for Fort McMurray: pre-launch, designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), with certification in progress and no certificate issued.
Where things stand: the IS-04Z1 has not launched, and none of its four certification routes has produced a certificate yet. Operator approval runs on its own timeline. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Fort McMurray. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.
A short profile of the site and the kinds of classified area that matter for portable equipment.
The May 2016 wildfire forced the evacuation of about 88,000 people and halted production at facilities north of the city.
Winters average about -17 degrees C in January with extreme lows below -50 degrees C, so cold-rated batteries and equipment matter.
Fort McMurray International Airport is the largest in northern Alberta, with flights to Edmonton, Calgary and Fort Chipewyan, and has been managed by the Fort McMurray Airport Authority since 2010.
Hot-water extraction was first used by Abasands in the 1930s, and processing output reached over 1,100 barrels a day by World War II, long before large-scale mining began.
The Great Canadian Oil Sands plant, now Suncor, opened in 1967 and the town's population grew from 6,847 in 1971 to 31,000 by 1981 as more oil sands plants followed.
Since 1995 Fort McMurray has been an urban service area within the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo, so planning and permitting are handled at the regional level.
A hazardous area is a place where flammable gas, vapour or combustible dust may be present. Standards divide these into zones: Zones 0, 1 and 2 for gas and vapour, and Zones 20, 21 and 22 for dust. Zone 1 and Zone 21 are the tier where an explosive atmosphere is likely to occur in normal operation, which is where the IS-04Z1 is designed to work. Anything carried in must be marked for the zone, gas group and temperature class of the area.
No certificate has been issued for the IS-04Z1 yet, so it must not be taken into a classified area until the certificate covering it exists and the site operator has accepted it.
In Fort McMurray. Classified locations near Fort McMurray occur in bitumen extraction plants, upgrader units, diluent and fuel storage, and in situ processing facilities. The operator carries out the classification, under the Alberta Safety Codes system. SAMS does not classify areas, so a specifier should request the operator's area drawings.
A short checklist for anyone writing or reviewing the specification, with the IS-04Z1 status against each point.
Not yet. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and its certification is still in progress ahead of a Q4 2026 launch. No unit goes into a classified area before the certificate covering it exists. The datasheet, the certification schedule and safe-area evaluation units are available now.
SAMS has not published a price. Any figure you are offered for an uncertified Ex phone should be treated with caution; written indicative pricing is available for a defined quantity and site.
Zone 1 and Zone 21 (gas and dust) with gas group IIC and temperature class T4, subject to certification. It must not be used in a classified area before its certificate is issued and the site has accepted it.
Likely candidates are bitumen extraction plants, upgrader units, diluent and fuel storage, in situ processing facilities. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.
Not exactly. Explosion proof is a broad everyday term; intrinsic safety is one protection concept, which limits energy so ignition cannot occur. Flameproof (Ex d) is a different concept that contains an explosion. The IS-04Z1 is intrinsically safe by design.
The climate is borderline subarctic with severe winters, so low temperature performance of batteries, displays and cables is a real concern. Choose devices rated for the lowest expected temperature and confirm any site winter-work guidance.
By road on Highway 63 and through the Fort McMurray airport, with some site buses and camps used by operators. Confirm which transport arrangement the operator uses and whether powered devices are limited in vehicles or buses.
Cold is a genuine constraint. January averages about -17 degrees C, with lows below -50 degrees C, so battery capacity and glove use are practical concerns. Check the datasheet's operating range and plan insulated storage and safe-area charging. The site operator can say how long outdoor tasks last in winter.
