Cold climate
Fort McMurray's January average is about -17 degrees C, so batteries, touchscreens and seals are tested by winter conditions.
Canada's oil sands, mainly the Athabasca deposit in northern Alberta, are produced by open-pit mining with on-site upgrading and by in situ methods. Alberta has five bitumen upgraders: four turn mined bitumen into synthetic crude and one produces mostly diesel from thermal in-situ bitumen, all handling flammable hydrocarbons at high temperature and pressure. If you are specifying a hazardous area mobile phone for Canada's oil sands, this page covers the markings, the approvals and the current certification status of the IS-04Z1.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. The SAMS IS-04Z1 is the intrinsically safe smartphone covered here for Canada's oil sands: pre-launch, designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), with certification in progress and no certificate issued.
Current position: certification in progress, nothing issued, launch targeted for Q4 2026. A buyer's engineering review is separate from the certificate. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Canada Oil Sands. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.
A short profile of the site and the kinds of classified area that matter for portable equipment.
Fort McMurray's January average is about -17 degrees C, so batteries, touchscreens and seals are tested by winter conditions.
Syncrude is owned by a joint venture in which Suncor holds the majority interest, and Suncor, Canadian Natural and Imperial run the major mines.
The Athabasca, Peace River and Cold Lake oil sands deposits together lie under about 141,000 square kilometres of boreal forest and muskeg in northern Alberta, according to figures attributed to the provincial energy ministry and regulator.
Apart from Scotford, the upgraders are integrated with the mine's bitumen plant, and waste heat from product cooling heats process water for the adjacent mine, reducing natural gas use.
Both Suncor upgraders use delayed coking technology, a thermal cracking process that creates hot, hydrocarbon-rich areas needing strict area classification.
Outside Alberta there are two upgraders in Saskatchewan, the Lloydminster Upgrader and the NewGrade Upgrader, both processing Saskatchewan heavy oil.
A hazardous area is a place where flammable gas, vapour or combustible dust may be present. Standards divide these into zones: Zones 0, 1 and 2 for gas and vapour, and Zones 20, 21 and 22 for dust. Zone 1 and Zone 21 are the tier where an explosive atmosphere is likely to occur in normal operation, which is where the IS-04Z1 is designed to work. Anything carried in must be marked for the zone, gas group and temperature class of the area.
No certificate has been issued for the IS-04Z1 yet, so it must not be taken into a classified area until the certificate covering it exists and the site operator has accepted it.
In Canada's oil sands. Hydrocarbon processing and diluent handling create Zone 1 and Zone 2 locations, mostly around extraction, upgrading and SAGD facilities. The site operator carries out the classification under its own procedures and the Alberta Safety Codes system. SAMS does not classify areas, so ask for current drawings first.
A short checklist for anyone writing or reviewing the specification, with the IS-04Z1 status against each point.
Not yet. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and its certification is still in progress ahead of a Q4 2026 launch. No unit goes into a classified area before the certificate covering it exists. The datasheet, the certification schedule and safe-area evaluation units are available now.
No price is published. While certification is in progress there is no list price and no committed lead time, and a supplier quoting a firm figure for an uncertified Ex handset is promising something it cannot stand behind. Indicative pre-launch pricing is issued in writing against a stated quantity and site.
Zone 1 and Zone 21 (gas and dust) with gas group IIC and temperature class T4, subject to certification. It must not be used in a classified area before its certificate is issued and the site has accepted it.
Likely candidates are bitumen extraction and froth treatment, upgrader process units, diluent and naphtha handling, sagd facilities. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.
Not exactly. Explosion proof is a broad everyday term; intrinsic safety is one protection concept, which limits energy so ignition cannot occur. Flameproof (Ex d) is a different concept that contains an explosion. The IS-04Z1 is intrinsically safe by design.
Often. Delayed coking and heavy oil processing involve hot surfaces and hydrocarbon fluids, so a device's T-class matters. Ask the operator for the area's gas group and maximum surface temperature requirement, and do not assume T4 is always sufficient.
Large plants do periodic maintenance outages that bring many contractors on site. Dates are operator-specific and often announced to suppliers early, so ask your operator contact about timing and device approval requirements for turnaround staff.
Suncor, Canadian Natural Resources and Imperial Oil run the major mines, and Syncrude is owned by a joint venture in which Suncor holds the majority interest. Cenovus is also a major in situ producer. Each has its own supplier prequalification, so a buyer should approach the operator's procurement and HSE teams directly.
