Expansion
A nitric acid and ammonium nitrate plant was contracted in 2023 for about USD 300 million, with 800 tonnes per day of ammonium nitrate targeted by the end of 2027.
Aswan, in Upper Egypt, is home to the KIMA fertiliser company, whose ammonia and urea plant started up in 2020, and to long-established granite quarries. Aswan is a busy market and tourist centre and a global winter tourist destination, so hotels, transport and visitors share the city with its industrial and utility sites. If you are specifying an explosion proof smartphone for Aswan, this page covers the markings, the approvals and the current certification status of the IS-04Z1.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. The SAMS IS-04Z1 is the intrinsically safe smartphone covered here for Aswan: pre-launch, designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), with certification in progress and no certificate issued.
Current position: certification in progress, nothing issued, launch targeted for Q4 2026. An operator's own vendor approval is a separate step. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Aswan. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.
A short profile of the site and the kinds of classified area that matter for portable equipment.
A nitric acid and ammonium nitrate plant was contracted in 2023 for about USD 300 million, with 800 tonnes per day of ammonium nitrate targeted by the end of 2027.
Aswan has an extremely dry desert climate and very hot summers, so heat tolerance matters for devices.
Hydropower contributed 6% of Egypt's electricity in 2025 and wind and solar 7%, while fossil fuels still generated 87%, so Aswan's hydro is a small but visible part of the national mix.
Aswan is one of the hottest and driest cities in the world, with average summer highs consistently above 40 degrees Celsius from June to September, so heat management matters for outdoor equipment.
Aswan lies on the east bank of the Nile just north of the Aswan Dam at the first cataract, which makes the river and dam the main reference points for access and logistics.
The older Aswan Low Dam was completed in 1902 and the High Dam was built 7 km upstream of it, so two generations of dam and power infrastructure sit close together at the first cataract.
“Explosion proof” is the phrase most buyers use for equipment that may be taken into a classified hazardous area. Strictly, it covers several protection concepts: a flameproof enclosure (Ex d) contains an internal explosion, while intrinsic safety (Ex i) limits electrical energy so that an ignition cannot start. Phones are normally intrinsically safe, because a flameproof handset would be too heavy to carry all shift.
The IS-04Z1 uses intrinsic safety, with a marking target of Ex ib IIC T4, and is designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21. It is pre-launch, certification is in progress and no certificate has been issued.
In Aswan. In an ammonia and urea plant, explosion-proof is a loose phrase. Flameproof Ex d covers fixed equipment, while a handset depends on intrinsic safety. Ammonia is a gas with unusual properties, so the plant operator decides which protection concept and gas group apply in each area, not the phone supplier.
A short checklist for anyone writing or reviewing the specification, with the IS-04Z1 status against each point.
No. Nothing can be bought or taken into a classified area today: certification is in progress and launch is planned for Q4 2026. What is available now is the datasheet, the written certification schedule and evaluation units for safe-area use.
No price is published. While certification is in progress there is no list price and no committed lead time, and a supplier quoting a firm figure for an uncertified Ex handset is promising something it cannot stand behind. Indicative pre-launch pricing is issued in writing against a stated quantity and site.
It is intrinsically safe (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), which is the usual way to make a phone for hazardous areas. It is not a flameproof (Ex d) design, and certification is still in progress.
Likely candidates are ammonia and urea production, nitric acid and ammonium nitrate handling (under construction), quarry explosives storage. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.
Not exactly. Explosion proof is a broad everyday term; intrinsic safety is one protection concept, which limits energy so ignition cannot occur. Flameproof (Ex d) is a different concept that contains an explosion. The IS-04Z1 is intrinsically safe by design.
Aswan is in southern Egypt, where summers are typically very hot and dry, so check the maximum ambient temperature on the certificate, the dust ingress rating and battery behaviour in heat. Avoid leaving devices in vehicles or in direct sun, and plan outdoor work around the cooler hours.
Not necessarily, because zones depend on the specific area. Hydroelectric halls are often non-hazardous, while battery rooms, fuel stores, transformer oil areas and some tunnels may be classified. Request the operator's hazardous-area drawings and permit-to-work rules before deciding which devices to bring.
A nitric acid and ammonium nitrate plant was contracted in 2023, with 800 tonnes per day of ammonium nitrate targeted by the end of 2027. Construction and commissioning activity may therefore continue. Ask KIMA which areas are classified at present and how it handles contractor equipment.
