Hot semi-arid climate
Summers are extremely hot and dry, with record highs above 50 C, and winters are mild with moderate rain.
BP signed a preliminary deal to develop the Kirkuk, Bai Hassan, Jambur and Khabbaz fields, which it estimates hold about nine billion barrels of recoverable oil, under a profit-sharing model. The Baba and Avanah domes and the adjacent Bai Hassan, Jambur and Khabbaz fields are operated by the North Oil Company. An explosion proof smartphone distributor in Kirkuk would carry the IS-04Z1 to these buyers once certification completes.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. Kirkuk has no appointed SAMS distributor yet: the IS-04Z1 is pre-launch (certification in progress, no certificate issued, launch planned for Q4 2026), and distributor applications are open.
Where things stand: the IS-04Z1 has not launched, and none of its four certification routes has produced a certificate yet. A buyer's engineering review is separate from the certificate. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Kirkuk. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.
Who operates there and which kinds of classified area a handset would meet, from the SAMS site research.
Summers are extremely hot and dry, with record highs above 50 C, and winters are mild with moderate rain.
The fields have produced for decades, so work centres on rehabilitation, maintenance and well work; a BP redevelopment contract was finalised in 2025.
Iraq's winters are cooler and wetter, with average temperatures around 10 degrees Celsius, and the north sometimes falls below freezing.
Kirkuk has a diverse population of Kurds, Iraqi Turkmen and Arabs, so crews and local contractors may work in Arabic, Kurdish or Turkmen, and clear multilingual instructions help.
Summers from May to October are very hot and dry with temperatures above 46 degrees Celsius, and dry dusty winds are common.
Telecom equipment sold in Iraq needs Communications and Media Commission type approval, with certificates valid for one year and a local partner involved.
“Explosion proof” is the phrase most buyers use for equipment that may be taken into a classified hazardous area. Strictly, it covers several protection concepts: a flameproof enclosure (Ex d) contains an internal explosion, while intrinsic safety (Ex i) limits electrical energy so that an ignition cannot start. Phones are normally intrinsically safe, because a flameproof handset would be too heavy to carry all shift.
The IS-04Z1 uses intrinsic safety, with a marking target of Ex ib IIC T4, and is designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21. It is pre-launch, certification is in progress and no certificate has been issued.
In Kirkuk. In the Kirkuk fields, explosion-proof is the common shorthand at wellheads, gathering stations and gas processing. Heavy fixed equipment may be flameproof Ex d, whereas a phone taken on well work and maintenance rounds relies on intrinsic safety. The IS-04Z1 is designed around intrinsic safety, not around a flameproof housing.
SAMS is appointing authorised distributors ahead of the Q4 2026 launch. No territory has been granted for Kirkuk yet and applications are reviewed company by company. Because a certified Ex device cannot be opened by an ordinary phone workshop without invalidating its certificate, SAMS looks for partners who can provide competent technical support and after-sales service locally.
Not today. Until the certificates are issued the IS-04Z1 stays out of classified areas, and until launch there is nothing to purchase. You can ask for the datasheet and the certification schedule, or book a safe-area evaluation unit.
SAMS has not published a price. Any figure you are offered for an uncertified Ex phone should be treated with caution; written indicative pricing is available for a defined quantity and site.
It is intrinsically safe (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), which is the usual way to make a phone for hazardous areas. It is not a flameproof (Ex d) design, and certification is still in progress.
Likely candidates are wellheads and gathering stations, gas processing, crude pumping and pipeline facilities. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.
Apply through the distributor page with your company details and the territory you cover. SAMS reviews applications company by company and has not yet granted a territory for Kirkuk.
BP signed a preliminary agreement for four Kirkuk-region fields, with a profit-sharing model reported. The detailed timing and scope depend on final contracts, so check status with the operator.
Oil wells, gathering stations, separators, storage tanks, and gas processing and flare systems across the Kirkuk, Bai Hassan, Jambur and Khabbaz fields. Zones are set by the operator for each facility.
The equipment depends on the area classification, not the age of the field. Rehabilitation and well work may open or alter classified areas, so the operator's current zone drawings apply. Ask the operator for them before selecting a device, whatever the field's history.
