Seasonal climate
Summers are long, arid and extremely hot while winters are mild and wetter, with more seasonal variation than the southern fields.
Iraq's Communications and Media Commission issues type approval certificates valid for one year for telecommunications equipment sold in the country. The Kalak refinery of KAR Group, in Kalak district about 40 km west of the city, processes crude from nearby fields and creates refinery and fuel-storage hazardous areas. Distribution partners for Erbil and the Kurdistan Region are being identified ahead of the Q4 2026 launch of the IS-04Z1.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. Erbil and the Kurdistan Region has no appointed SAMS distributor yet: the IS-04Z1 is pre-launch (certification in progress, no certificate issued, launch planned for Q4 2026), and distributor applications are open.
Status: pre-launch. IECEx, ATEX, UKEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress and no certificate has been issued; launch is planned for Q4 2026. A buyer's engineering review is separate from the certificate. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Erbil. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.
The companies on site and the hazardous-area types a handset is likely to meet there.

The Kurdistan Region has its own ministries and company registration processes, which can differ from federal Iraq.
The Citadel of Erbil, at the heart of the old city, was inscribed as a World Heritage Site in July 2014, and the area is one of the oldest continuously inhabited places in the world.
The Kurdistan Regional Government is promoting special economic zones and new industrial zones with petrochemical, construction-material and other manufacturing investment.
Operating industrial projects include Erbil Steel Company, running since 2007, and the Lafarge Bazian cement factory, which makes the region a large market for construction materials.
Iraq's winters are wetter and cooler than its summers, averaging about 10 degrees Celsius, and the north sees temperatures fall below freezing at times.
“Explosion proof” is the phrase most buyers use for equipment that may be taken into a classified hazardous area. Strictly, it covers several protection concepts: a flameproof enclosure (Ex d) contains an internal explosion, while intrinsic safety (Ex i) limits electrical energy so that an ignition cannot start. Phones are normally intrinsically safe, because a flameproof handset would be too heavy to carry all shift.
The IS-04Z1 uses intrinsic safety, with a marking target of Ex ib IIC T4, and is designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21. It is pre-launch, certification is in progress and no certificate has been issued.
In Erbil and the Kurdistan Region. Near the Kalak refinery, hazards include process units and fuel loading, where people say explosion-proof loosely. Fixed equipment may be flameproof Ex d, with its strong enclosure, while a portable phone is better served by intrinsic safety, which limits circuit energy. The IS-04Z1 is designed on the intrinsic-safety principle for that handheld role.
Distribution of the IS-04Z1 is by authorised partners only, and SAMS has not yet granted a territory for Erbil and the Kurdistan Region. Each application is reviewed on its merits. Because opening a certified Ex handset in an ordinary workshop invalidates its certificate, the partner must be able to support and service the device locally.
No. Nothing can be bought or taken into a classified area today: certification is in progress and launch is planned for Q4 2026. What is available now is the datasheet, the written certification schedule and evaluation units for safe-area use.
No price is published. While certification is in progress there is no list price and no committed lead time, and a supplier quoting a firm figure for an uncertified Ex handset is promising something it cannot stand behind. Indicative pre-launch pricing is issued in writing against a stated quantity and site.
It is intrinsically safe (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), which is the usual way to make a phone for hazardous areas. It is not a flameproof (Ex d) design, and certification is still in progress.
Likely candidates are refinery process units, fuel storage and loading, gas and field production facilities in the region. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.
Apply through the distributor page with your company details and the territory you cover. SAMS reviews applications company by company and has not yet granted a territory for Erbil and the Kurdistan Region.
The Kurdistan Region has its own regional government and administration, so permits, entry arrangements and company registration may differ from Baghdad. Confirm requirements with your host before travel.
Erbil International Airport has a very long 4,800 metre runway and can handle passenger and cargo flights, which is convenient for urgent equipment shipments. Customs clearance is handled by your freight agent.
No. Refinery process units and fuel loading areas can be classified hazardous, and an ordinary phone is not designed for them. Only equipment suitable for the zone and approved by the operator should enter. The IS-04Z1 is intended for such areas but is not yet certified.
