Lindsey
Lindsey closed in 2025 after owner Prax became insolvent; Phillips 66 agreed in January 2026 to acquire assets but said it will not restart it as a standalone refinery.
England hosts three of the UK's four operating refineries, Fawley, Stanlow and Humber, with Pembroke in Wales the fourth. Employers must also prepare plans for accidents and emergencies and make sure staff are informed and trained to deal with dangerous-substance risks, which is why site inductions usually cover equipment rules. This page explains what to look for in an explosion proof mobile phone for England, and where the IS-04Z1 stands against that list today.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. The SAMS IS-04Z1 is the intrinsically safe smartphone covered here for England: pre-launch, designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), with certification in progress and no certificate issued.
Status: pre-launch. IECEx, ATEX, UKEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress and no certificate has been issued; launch is planned for Q4 2026. Operator approval runs on its own timeline. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in England. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.
A short profile of the site and the kinds of classified area that matter for portable equipment.
Lindsey closed in 2025 after owner Prax became insolvent; Phillips 66 agreed in January 2026 to acquire assets but said it will not restart it as a standalone refinery.
DSEAR applies, and the UK recognises CE marking alongside UKCA for Great Britain, with the recognition period currently running to 31 December 2027.
Employers must identify and classify areas where explosive atmospheres may occur and avoid ignition sources, for example from unprotected equipment, in those areas.
HSE lists dangerous substances as including solvents, paints, varnishes, flammable gases such as LPG, dusts from machining, sanding and foodstuffs, pressurised gases and substances corrosive to metal.
DSEAR duties fall on employers and the self-employed and also protect members of the public who may be put at risk by work activity, so contractors share responsibility with site owners.
In Great Britain, the 2016 EPS Regulations implement the ATEX equipment directive, and the UK government has extended recognition of goods meeting EU requirements, including CE marking, indefinitely beyond 2024 for many products, in force from 1 October 2024.
“Explosion proof” is the phrase most buyers use for equipment that may be taken into a classified hazardous area. Strictly, it covers several protection concepts: a flameproof enclosure (Ex d) contains an internal explosion, while intrinsic safety (Ex i) limits electrical energy so that an ignition cannot start. Phones are normally intrinsically safe, because a flameproof handset would be too heavy to carry all shift.
The IS-04Z1 uses intrinsic safety, with a marking target of Ex ib IIC T4, and is designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21. It is pre-launch, certification is in progress and no certificate has been issued.
In England. In English refinery and terminal language, 'explosion-proof' is used loosely for equipment suitable for Zone 1. The real concepts are flameproof Ex d for fixed apparatus and intrinsic safety for portable devices. At process units, tank farms and marine jetties the operator selects the concept per area, so the everyday phrase should never be taken as a specification.
A short checklist for anyone writing or reviewing the specification, with the IS-04Z1 status against each point.
Not yet. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and its certification is still in progress ahead of a Q4 2026 launch. No unit goes into a classified area before the certificate covering it exists. The datasheet, the certification schedule and safe-area evaluation units are available now.
No price is published. While certification is in progress there is no list price and no committed lead time, and a supplier quoting a firm figure for an uncertified Ex handset is promising something it cannot stand behind. Indicative pre-launch pricing is issued in writing against a stated quantity and site.
It is intrinsically safe (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), which is the usual way to make a phone for hazardous areas. It is not a flameproof (Ex d) design, and certification is still in progress.
Likely candidates are refinery process units, fuel terminals and tank farms, marine oil jetties, petrochemical units. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.
Not exactly. Explosion proof is a broad everyday term; intrinsic safety is one protection concept, which limits energy so ignition cannot occur. Flameproof (Ex d) is a different concept that contains an explosion. The IS-04Z1 is intrinsically safe by design.
The Health and Safety Executive, and in some premises local authorities, enforce DSEAR. They expect employers to carry out a risk assessment, classify areas and control ignition sources. Ask your client which assessments and records apply to your work.
Yes. HSE lists dusts from machining, sanding and foodstuffs among dangerous substances, so combustible dust areas can be classified in the same way as gas areas. Check whether your task is near flour, wood, metal or grain handling and ask for the zone classification.
England hosts three of the UK's four operating refineries: Fawley, Stanlow and Humber. Fuel terminals, gas networks and chemical sites also contain classified areas. Lindsey stopped refining in 2025. Each operator assesses its own zones, so confirm requirements with the site operator for the specific site.
