West Thurrock
The terminal at West Thurrock, Essex, with about 86 tanks for petroleum products, chemicals and liquefied gas, was acquired in 2016 by Navigator Terminals, a Greenergy and Macquarie joint venture.
London has no refinery, but Thames-side fuel terminals supply the capital: Thames Oilport on the former Coryton refinery site and the large West Thurrock terminal in Essex. The Port of London expanded downstream in the 18th and 19th centuries, and the Underground, the world's first urban rail network, was created to ease traffic congestion. Distribution partners for London and the Thames are being identified ahead of the Q4 2026 launch of the IS-04Z1.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. London and the Thames has no appointed SAMS distributor yet: the IS-04Z1 is pre-launch (certification in progress, no certificate issued, launch planned for Q4 2026), and distributor applications are open.
Current position: certification in progress, nothing issued, launch targeted for Q4 2026. An operator's own vendor approval is a separate step. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in London. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.

The terminal at West Thurrock, Essex, with about 86 tanks for petroleum products, chemicals and liquefied gas, was acquired in 2016 by Navigator Terminals, a Greenergy and Macquarie joint venture.
The terminals are on the Thames estuary in Essex, not inside Greater London, so site access involves road transfers from the capital.
The Port of London Authority has jurisdiction on the tidal Thames, and the London Fire Brigade is the statutory fire and rescue service for Greater London, so riverside and fire-safety rules involve separate bodies.
The Thames is tidal and London is vulnerable to flooding, a risk that has grown with rising high-water levels, which affects riverside and low-lying industrial sites.
The Port of London covers the tidal Thames from Teddington Lock to a boundary line out in the North Sea, is governed by the Port of London Authority (a public trust since 1908), and was the UK's largest port in 2020.
London is Europe's largest city economy and one of the world's major financial centres, so many suppliers, consultancies and head offices that approve equipment are based there.
ATEX is the European legal framework for equipment used in explosive atmospheres (Directive 2014/34/EU). IECEx is the international certification scheme built on the IEC 60079 standards. Buyers outside Europe often ask for both: an IECEx certificate is the technical evidence most national regimes build on, while ATEX is the legal route into the European market.
For the IS-04Z1 both routes are in progress with TÜV in Germany and neither certificate has been issued. The marking target is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4: equipment Group II (surface industry), Category 2 (Zone 1 gas), protection concept ib (intrinsic safety), gas group IIC and temperature class T4.
In London and the Thames. A reviewer for a Thames-side terminal would expect certificate evidence aligned with the operator's DSEAR assessment. The terminals are owned by groups such as Greenergy, Shell and Navigator Terminals, with international contractors visiting for maintenance, so a dual ATEX and IECEx route is designed to ease paperwork. Both are in progress for SAMS and none is issued.
A distributor for London and the Thames would carry the IS-04Z1 after certification completes; the Q4 2026 launch is the planning date and no appointment has been made. SAMS reviews applicants one by one and prefers companies with their own Ex-competent technical and service staff, since certified devices must not be repaired outside approved channels.
Not yet. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and its certification is still in progress ahead of a Q4 2026 launch. No unit goes into a classified area before the certificate covering it exists. The datasheet, the certification schedule and safe-area evaluation units are available now.
No price is published. While certification is in progress there is no list price and no committed lead time, and a supplier quoting a firm figure for an uncertified Ex handset is promising something it cannot stand behind. Indicative pre-launch pricing is issued in writing against a stated quantity and site.
Not yet. Both routes are in progress with TÜV in Germany and no certificate has been issued. Any listing that says otherwise is wrong.
Likely candidates are fuel storage terminals, marine jetties, road tanker loading, gas network sites. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.
Apply through the distributor page with your company details and the territory you cover. SAMS reviews applications company by company and has not yet granted a territory for London and the Thames.
Employers are responsible under the Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations, enforced by the Health and Safety Executive or local authorities, and the London Fire Brigade handles fire safety. Ask the premises for its hazardous-area register and risk assessment.
Mainly the latter. Head offices, regulators, consultants and insurers are concentrated in London, while major process plants and terminals are in estuary and regional locations elsewhere. Confirm the actual site and its classification before assuming any hazardous-area requirement.
No refinery. The former Coryton refinery stopped refining in 2012 and became the Thames Oilport fuel import terminal, and a large terminal operates at West Thurrock in Essex. Both are on the Thames estuary outside Greater London. Confirm access and equipment requirements with the site operator.
