ATEX and IECEx Mobile Phone Distributor in Scotland

Scotland has a long oil, gas and petrochemical base. Grangemouth Refinery on the Firth of Forth began operating in 1924 and was the only crude oil refinery in Scotland, but it has now closed; its neighbouring petrochemical complex dates from 1951. An ATEX and IECEx mobile phone distributor in Scotland would carry the IS-04Z1 to these buyers once certification completes.

Short answer. Scotland has no appointed SAMS distributor yet: the IS-04Z1 is pre-launch (certification in progress, no certificate issued, launch planned for Q4 2026), and distributor applications are open.

Where things stand: the IS-04Z1 has not launched, and none of its four certification routes has produced a certificate yet. An operator's own vendor approval is a separate step. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

Conditions in Scotland that affect handheld equipment

Mossmorran

Shell's Fife NGL plant separates natural gas liquids. ExxonMobil's Fife Ethylene Plant ceased production in February 2026 and is due to be decommissioned, so activity there is shifting to closure work.

St Fergus

The terminal handles roughly a quarter of Britain's gas and sends natural gas liquids to Mossmorran. It is owned by North Sea Midstream Partners, with Shell, Esso and others as tenants.

More about Scotland that matters for portable equipment

Scotland: projects and investment

Hydrocarbon production is expected to fall to about a third of 2019 levels by 2035, and a global decommissioning market of around 67 billion pounds over ten years is forecast, so abandonment work is growing.

Scotland: industry on the ground

Shipbuilding remains significant, generating 403 million pounds of gross value added in 2022, alongside oil and gas, food and drink, energy and manufacturing among Scotland's primary industries.

Scotland: infrastructure

A 58-mile pipeline from the Finnart oil terminal on Loch Long to Grangemouth has operated since the 1950s, and the Kinneil terminal stabilised North Sea Forties crude from 1975.

Scotland: rules and approvals

The North Sea Transition Authority regulates licensing, and OPRED regulates environmental and decommissioning activity for offshore oil and gas, so offshore work answers to UK regulators rather than Scottish bodies.

The term · ATEX and IECEx

What “ATEX and IECEx” means for a smartphone

ATEX is the European legal framework for equipment used in explosive atmospheres (Directive 2014/34/EU). IECEx is the international certification scheme built on the IEC 60079 standards. Buyers outside Europe often ask for both: an IECEx certificate is the technical evidence most national regimes build on, while ATEX is the legal route into the European market.

For the IS-04Z1 both routes are in progress with TÜV in Germany and neither certificate has been issued. The marking target is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4: equipment Group II (surface industry), Category 2 (Zone 1 gas), protection concept ib (intrinsic safety), gas group IIC and temperature class T4.

In Scotland. A reviewer in Scotland would expect certificate evidence tied to the operator's DSEAR assessment at Grangemouth, Mossmorran or St Fergus. With Shell, INEOS and others employing international contractors, a dual ATEX and IECEx route is designed to help. Both certifications remain in progress for SAMS, and none has been issued.

The route · distribution

Distributing the IS-04Z1 in Scotland

SAMS is appointing authorised distributors ahead of the Q4 2026 launch. No territory has been granted for Scotland yet and applications are reviewed company by company. Because a certified Ex device cannot be opened by an ordinary phone workshop without invalidating its certificate, SAMS looks for partners who can provide competent technical support and after-sales service locally.

What SAMS looks for in a partner

Operator relationships
Existing supplier registrations or a clear route to them with the main operators and contractors in Scotland.
Ex-competent staff
People who understand zone classification, markings and the conditions of a certificate.

And equally important

Local-language support
Documentation, training and helpdesk in the languages the workforce uses.
Service capability
Spares, battery replacement and repair routed through SAMS-approved channels.
Questions · Scotland

Frequently asked questions

Can we buy an ATEX and IECEx mobile phone in Scotland today?

Not today. Until the certificates are issued the IS-04Z1 stays out of classified areas, and until launch there is nothing to purchase. You can ask for the datasheet and the certification schedule, or book a safe-area evaluation unit.

What does an ATEX and IECEx mobile phone in Scotland cost?

SAMS has not published a price. Any figure you are offered for an uncertified Ex phone should be treated with caution; written indicative pricing is available for a defined quantity and site.

Is the IS-04Z1 ATEX and IECEx certified?

Not yet. Both routes are in progress with TÜV in Germany and no certificate has been issued. Any listing that says otherwise is wrong.

Which areas at Scotland would use it?

Likely candidates are petrochemical process units, natural gas liquids plant, gas terminals, fuel import and storage terminal. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.

How do I become a SAMS distributor for Scotland?

Apply through the distributor page with your company details and the territory you cover. SAMS reviews applications company by company and has not yet granted a territory for Scotland.

How does the North Sea climate affect handheld devices?

Offshore and coastal sites face wind, rain, salt spray and cold, and winter weather can disrupt crew changes. For handheld devices check ingress protection, corrosion resistance, glove-friendly controls and low-temperature battery behaviour, and ask the platform or terminal for its own requirements.

Which parts of Scotland have the most hazardous-area work?

Aberdeen and the north-east are the centre of offshore oil and gas support, with other activity at the Grangemouth industrial area on the Firth of Forth, east-coast and Shetland terminals, shipyards, distilleries and offshore wind bases. Zoning is site-specific, so ask each operator for classification drawings.

How have recent site changes affected buyers?

The Grangemouth refinery stopped processing crude in 2025 and is becoming a fuels import terminal, and ExxonMobil's Fife Ethylene Plant ceased production in February 2026 and is due to be decommissioned. Work may therefore shift towards closure and conversion, so ask operators which contractors and requirements apply.
