EU product rules
Under the Windsor Framework, relevant EU product rules apply in Northern Ireland, so equipment is typically CE marked, with UKNI added where a UK notified body is used.
Key industries in 2024 include aerospace, agriculture, construction, engineering, health technology and manufacturing, and engineering is the largest manufacturing sub-sector, particularly aerospace and heavy machinery. Zone 1 work arises at power stations, gas transmission assets and fuel storage. An explosion proof mobile phone distributor in Northern Ireland would carry the IS-04Z1 to these buyers once certification completes.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. Northern Ireland has no appointed SAMS distributor yet: the IS-04Z1 is pre-launch (certification in progress, no certificate issued, launch planned for Q4 2026), and distributor applications are open.
Where things stand: the IS-04Z1 has not launched, and none of its four certification routes has produced a certificate yet. Operator approval runs on its own timeline. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Northern Ireland. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.
The companies on site and the hazardous-area types a handset is likely to meet there.

Ballylumford, owned by EP UK Investments since 2019, is the region's largest power station and runs on natural gas. Coolkeeragh near Derry is a 400 MW gas-fired plant owned by ESB.
The Belfast yard has sea access through the Victoria Channel with no locks or height restrictions, 24-hour ISPS-approved security, and two airports close by: George Best Belfast City five minutes away and Belfast International under 30 minutes.
The Harland and Wolff shipyard in the Port of Belfast has two of Europe's largest drydocks, with a main dock of 556 m by 93 m, and is licensed for vessel repair and open grit blasting.
Northern Ireland was self-sufficient in food production by 2021 and exported more than half of its meat and crops, so food plants with dust, ammonia refrigeration and flour or feed handling are common.
Gas for Greater Belfast arrives through the 24-inch Scotland-Northern Ireland pipeline, and a north-west pipeline from Carrickfergus to Derry opened in November 2004, so gas networks and compressor sites sit across the east and north-west.
“Explosion proof” is the phrase most buyers use for equipment that may be taken into a classified hazardous area. Strictly, it covers several protection concepts: a flameproof enclosure (Ex d) contains an internal explosion, while intrinsic safety (Ex i) limits electrical energy so that an ignition cannot start. Phones are normally intrinsically safe, because a flameproof handset would be too heavy to carry all shift.
The IS-04Z1 uses intrinsic safety, with a marking target of Ex ib IIC T4, and is designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21. It is pre-launch, certification is in progress and no certificate has been issued.
In Northern Ireland. At Northern Ireland's gas-fired power stations and gas transmission assets, 'explosion-proof' covers fuel gas systems, pressure reduction sites and pipeline equipment. Flameproof Ex d suits fixed apparatus, while intrinsic safety suits a handheld used on inspection rounds. The operator decides which concept applies in each classified area.
Distribution of the IS-04Z1 is by authorised partners only, and SAMS has not yet granted a territory for Northern Ireland. Each application is reviewed on its merits. Because opening a certified Ex handset in an ordinary workshop invalidates its certificate, the partner must be able to support and service the device locally.
Not yet. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and its certification is still in progress ahead of a Q4 2026 launch. No unit goes into a classified area before the certificate covering it exists. The datasheet, the certification schedule and safe-area evaluation units are available now.
SAMS has not published a price. Any figure you are offered for an uncertified Ex phone should be treated with caution; written indicative pricing is available for a defined quantity and site.
It is intrinsically safe (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), which is the usual way to make a phone for hazardous areas. It is not a flameproof (Ex d) design, and certification is still in progress.
Likely candidates are gas-fired power station fuel systems, gas transmission pipeline assets, gas pressure reduction sites, fuel storage. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.
Apply through the distributor page with your company details and the territory you cover. SAMS reviews applications company by company and has not yet granted a territory for Northern Ireland.
Northern Ireland remains under EU product rules for many goods, so CE and ATEX marking is generally relevant there, while Great Britain uses UKCA. Requirements can change, so confirm with the operator and the certifying body which marking is accepted for portable Ex equipment on your site.
Likely locations include fuel and gas terminals at Belfast harbour, gas network compressor and pressure reduction sites, food and feed plants with dust risks, and shipyard and marine repair work. Zoning is site-specific, so ask the operator for area classification drawings before choosing handheld devices.
Gas-fired power stations such as Ballylumford and Coolkeeragh, the Mutual Energy gas pipeline network from Islandmagee, pressure reduction sites and fuel storage. A proposed gas storage cavern project at Islandmagee has not been confirmed in the sources checked, so ask the operators about project timing.
