Mutual Energy owns the Scotland-Northern Ireland pipeline, the Belfast gas transmission pipeline from Islandmagee, and the Moyle electricity interconnector.
Northern Ireland is a UK region with gas-fired power stations, the Scotland-Northern Ireland gas pipeline landing at Islandmagee and a proposed gas storage cavern project there. Northern Ireland was self-sufficient in food production by 2021 and exported more than half of its meat and crops, so food plants with dust, ammonia refrigeration and flour or feed handling are common. An intrinsically safe mobile phone distributor in Northern Ireland would carry the IS-04Z1 to these buyers once certification completes.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. Northern Ireland has no appointed SAMS distributor yet: the IS-04Z1 is pre-launch (certification in progress, no certificate issued, launch planned for Q4 2026), and distributor applications are open.
Status: pre-launch. IECEx, ATEX, UKEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress and no certificate has been issued; launch is planned for Q4 2026. Operator approval runs on its own timeline. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Northern Ireland. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.
A short profile of the site and the kinds of classified area that matter for portable equipment.
Mutual Energy owns the Scotland-Northern Ireland pipeline, the Belfast gas transmission pipeline from Islandmagee, and the Moyle electricity interconnector.
Under the Windsor Framework, relevant EU product rules apply in Northern Ireland, so equipment is typically CE marked, with UKNI added where a UK notified body is used.
The Harland and Wolff shipyard in the Port of Belfast has two of Europe's largest drydocks, with a main dock of 556 m by 93 m, and is licensed for vessel repair and open grit blasting.
Gas for Greater Belfast arrives through the 24-inch Scotland-Northern Ireland pipeline, and a north-west pipeline from Carrickfergus to Derry opened in November 2004, so gas networks and compressor sites sit across the east and north-west.
Unemployment was about 1.6% in early 2025, so qualified engineering and maintenance contractors can be hard to book at short notice during shutdown periods.
The electricity grid is operated by SONI and run by Northern Ireland Electricity, connected to the Republic by interconnectors of up to 1,200 MW and to Great Britain by the 500 MW Moyle interconnector.
Intrinsic safety limits the electrical and thermal energy in a circuit so that neither a spark nor a hot surface can ignite a gas or dust atmosphere, even when a fault occurs. The ib level, used for Zone 1, tolerates one fault. It is the usual way to make a handheld device that a worker carries continuously through a hazardous area.
The IS-04Z1 is designed on this principle for Zone 1 and Zone 21 (marking target II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4). Intrinsic safety is a design basis, not a certificate: certification is in progress and none has been issued yet.
In Northern Ireland. Rounds at Ballylumford or Coolkeeragh include fuel gas lines, pressure reduction skids and plant checks, and the gas pipeline from Islandmagee has its own inspection routes. A handheld designed for intrinsic safety lets staff record readings and photographs where they work, rather than walking to a safe area for every note.
A distributor for Northern Ireland would carry the IS-04Z1 after certification completes; the Q4 2026 launch is the planning date and no appointment has been made. SAMS reviews applicants one by one and prefers companies with their own Ex-competent technical and service staff, since certified devices must not be repaired outside approved channels.
Not today. Until the certificates are issued the IS-04Z1 stays out of classified areas, and until launch there is nothing to purchase. You can ask for the datasheet and the certification schedule, or book a safe-area evaluation unit.
There is no list price yet. SAMS gives indicative pre-launch pricing in writing, against a stated quantity and site, and does not commit to a lead time before certification completes.
The circuits are designed to limit energy so a spark or hot surface cannot ignite a gas or dust atmosphere, even with one fault (level ib, Zone 1). Certification of that design is in progress.
Likely candidates are gas-fired power station fuel systems, gas transmission pipeline assets, gas pressure reduction sites, fuel storage. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.
Apply through the distributor page with your company details and the territory you cover. SAMS reviews applications company by company and has not yet granted a territory for Northern Ireland.
Northern Ireland remains under EU product rules for many goods, so CE and ATEX marking is generally relevant there, while Great Britain uses UKCA. Requirements can change, so confirm with the operator and the certifying body which marking is accepted for portable Ex equipment on your site.
Likely locations include fuel and gas terminals at Belfast harbour, gas network compressor and pressure reduction sites, food and feed plants with dust risks, and shipyard and marine repair work. Zoning is site-specific, so ask the operator for area classification drawings before choosing handheld devices.
Gas-fired power stations such as Ballylumford and Coolkeeragh, the Mutual Energy gas pipeline network from Islandmagee, pressure reduction sites and fuel storage. A proposed gas storage cavern project at Islandmagee has not been confirmed in the sources checked, so ask the operators about project timing.
