Refinery closed
Petroineos ended crude processing at the Grangemouth refinery in 2025, and the site is becoming a fuels import, storage and distribution terminal.
Leith has been Edinburgh's port since at least the royal charter of 1329, and it retains a separate identity at the mouth of the Water of Leith, though the last shipyard there has closed. Its Port of Leith is being developed for offshore wind, while the Grangemouth petrochemical complex lies further up the Forth, where hazardous-area demand is concentrated. If you are specifying an Ex-proof smartphone for Edinburgh, Leith and the Forth, this page covers the markings, the approvals and the current certification status of the IS-04Z1.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. The SAMS IS-04Z1 is the intrinsically safe smartphone covered here for Edinburgh, Leith and the Forth: pre-launch, designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), with certification in progress and no certificate issued.
Current position: certification in progress, nothing issued, launch targeted for Q4 2026. Operator approval runs on its own timeline. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Edinburgh. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.

Petroineos ended crude processing at the Grangemouth refinery in 2025, and the site is becoming a fuels import, storage and distribution terminal.
In December 2024 Forth Ports announced a 50 million pound private investment at the Port of Leith after winning its largest offshore wind contract, for the 1.1 GW Inch Cape project. Foundations are handled at Leith.
Traditional industries of printing, brewing and distilling grew in the 19th century alongside rubber and engineering works, so the city has long had solvent, grain-dust and spirit-storage sites.
Edinburgh Airport lies 9 km west of the city centre just off the M8 and M9 motorways; it is Scotland's busiest, with 15.8 million passengers in 2024 and over 150 international destinations.
A green belt designated in 1957 surrounds the city except at the Forth shoreline, and developments such as Edinburgh Airport and the Royal Highland Showground lie within it.
Edinburgh has a cool temperate maritime climate, known as the windy city, with prevailing south-westerly winds, rainfall spread evenly through the year, and haar, a sea fog, on easterly winds.
“Ex-proof” is shorthand for equipment carrying an explosion-protection marking (the Ex mark) that matches the area it enters. The marking states the protection concept, gas or dust group and temperature class, and it must be backed by a certificate issued by a recognised body, so a phone described as Ex-proof should come with a certificate number you can check.
The IS-04Z1 is designed to carry the marking II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4. That is a target: certification is in progress, no certificate has been issued, and SAMS will publish the certificate numbers when they exist.
In Edinburgh, Leith and the Forth. A marking check for Grangemouth would start with the process unit's zone map, since ethylene and ethane handling points towards a gas group higher than for fuels. For that reason IIC marking is the conservative choice. The IS-04Z1 target is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4, still in certification, and the operator confirms what is needed.
A short checklist for anyone writing or reviewing the specification, with the IS-04Z1 status against each point.
Not yet. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and its certification is still in progress ahead of a Q4 2026 launch. No unit goes into a classified area before the certificate covering it exists. The datasheet, the certification schedule and safe-area evaluation units are available now.
SAMS has not published a price. Any figure you are offered for an uncertified Ex phone should be treated with caution; written indicative pricing is available for a defined quantity and site.
The marking target is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4. It becomes a marking only when the certificate is issued; until then it is a design target.
Likely candidates are port and offshore wind foundation handling, petrochemical process units at grangemouth, fuel import and storage terminal at grangemouth, ethane import and storage. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.
Not exactly. Explosion proof is a broad everyday term; intrinsic safety is one protection concept, which limits energy so ignition cannot occur. Flameproof (Ex d) is a different concept that contains an explosion. The IS-04Z1 is intrinsically safe by design.
Edinburgh is known for wind, and easterly haar brings damp sea fog, so devices used on the waterfront need good ingress protection and cleaning. Typically workers also note reduced visibility, so check screens, torches and alarms against site conditions.
Yes. The Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations apply across Great Britain, and the Health and Safety Executive enforces them with local authorities. Employers must classify areas and control ignition sources, so ask sites for their hazardous-area records.
Petroineos ended crude processing at the Grangemouth refinery in 2025, and the site is becoming a fuels import, storage and distribution terminal. The adjacent INEOS complex still operates the UK's last ethylene cracker. Contractor needs may therefore differ from a few years ago, so ask the operator for current requirements.
