Leith
In December 2024 Forth Ports announced a 50 million pound private investment at the Port of Leith after winning its largest offshore wind contract, for the 1.1 GW Inch Cape project. Foundations are handled at Leith.
Edinburgh is Scotland's capital and has few classified areas itself. Its Port of Leith is being developed for offshore wind, while the Grangemouth petrochemical complex lies further up the Forth, where hazardous-area demand is concentrated. This page explains what to look for in an ATEX and IECEx mobile phone for Edinburgh, Leith and the Forth, and where the IS-04Z1 stands against that list today.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. The SAMS IS-04Z1 is the intrinsically safe smartphone covered here for Edinburgh, Leith and the Forth: pre-launch, designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), with certification in progress and no certificate issued.
Current position: certification in progress, nothing issued, launch targeted for Q4 2026. A buyer's engineering review is separate from the certificate. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Edinburgh. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.

The INEOS site on the Firth of Forth houses the last operating ethylene cracker in the UK and imports US ethane. Grangemouth is Scotland's largest container port.
Edinburgh has a cool temperate maritime climate, known as the windy city, with prevailing south-westerly winds, rainfall spread evenly through the year, and haar, a sea fog, on easterly winds.
Edinburgh lies on the south shore of the Firth of Forth in Scotland's Central Belt, with 506,520 residents in 2020 and a wider metropolitan area of 912,490.
The city has long been a centre of education in medicine, law, science and engineering, which supports a trained workforce for the professional and technical services based there.
The city is the United Kingdom's second-largest financial and administrative centre after London, and a financial district has grown west of the castle since the 1990s.
ATEX is the European legal framework for equipment used in explosive atmospheres (Directive 2014/34/EU). IECEx is the international certification scheme built on the IEC 60079 standards. Buyers outside Europe often ask for both: an IECEx certificate is the technical evidence most national regimes build on, while ATEX is the legal route into the European market.
For the IS-04Z1 both routes are in progress with TÜV in Germany and neither certificate has been issued. The marking target is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4: equipment Group II (surface industry), Category 2 (Zone 1 gas), protection concept ib (intrinsic safety), gas group IIC and temperature class T4.
In Edinburgh, Leith and the Forth. A reviewer for a Leith or Grangemouth project would typically expect ATEX evidence, while INEOS and offshore wind contractors may also carry international schemes. Edinburgh itself has few classified areas, so a dual ATEX and IECEx route matters mainly for contractors working up the Forth. Both certifications remain in progress for SAMS, and nothing has been issued.
A short checklist for anyone writing or reviewing the specification, with the IS-04Z1 status against each point.
Not yet. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and its certification is still in progress ahead of a Q4 2026 launch. No unit goes into a classified area before the certificate covering it exists. The datasheet, the certification schedule and safe-area evaluation units are available now.
No price is published. While certification is in progress there is no list price and no committed lead time, and a supplier quoting a firm figure for an uncertified Ex handset is promising something it cannot stand behind. Indicative pre-launch pricing is issued in writing against a stated quantity and site.
Not yet. Both routes are in progress with TÜV in Germany and no certificate has been issued. Any listing that says otherwise is wrong.
Likely candidates are port and offshore wind foundation handling, petrochemical process units at grangemouth, fuel import and storage terminal at grangemouth, ethane import and storage. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.
Not exactly. Explosion proof is a broad everyday term; intrinsic safety is one protection concept, which limits energy so ignition cannot occur. Flameproof (Ex d) is a different concept that contains an explosion. The IS-04Z1 is intrinsically safe by design.
Edinburgh is known for wind, and easterly haar brings damp sea fog, so devices used on the waterfront need good ingress protection and cleaning. Typically workers also note reduced visibility, so check screens, torches and alarms against site conditions.
Yes. The Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations apply across Great Britain, and the Health and Safety Executive enforces them with local authorities. Employers must classify areas and control ignition sources, so ask sites for their hazardous-area records.
Petroineos ended crude processing at the Grangemouth refinery in 2025, and the site is becoming a fuels import, storage and distribution terminal. The adjacent INEOS complex still operates the UK's last ethylene cracker. Contractor needs may therefore differ from a few years ago, so ask the operator for current requirements.
