GS Caltex
The Yeosu Complex covers about 6 million square metres, with a mixed feed cracker completed in November 2022 producing 900,000 tonnes of ethylene a year.
Yeosu is a south coast city of about 269,000 people hosting a major refining and petrochemical complex. GS Caltex's Yeosu Complex and Lotte Chemical's Yeosu plant create large Zone 1 and Zone 2 areas. This page explains what to look for in an ATEX and IECEx smartphone for Yeosu, and where the IS-04Z1 stands against that list today.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. The SAMS IS-04Z1 is the intrinsically safe smartphone covered here for Yeosu: pre-launch, designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), with certification in progress and no certificate issued.
Current position: certification in progress, nothing issued, launch targeted for Q4 2026. An operator's own vendor approval is a separate step. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Yeosu. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.

The Yeosu Complex covers about 6 million square metres, with a mixed feed cracker completed in November 2022 producing 900,000 tonnes of ethylene a year.
Korea approved a restructuring plan in July 2026 involving Lotte Chemical's Yeosu operations and the Yeochun NCC integration.
GS Caltex concentrates its refining and petrochemical plants at the Yeosu Complex, which covers about 6 million square metres, making the complex a large single-site hazardous-area environment.
Yeosu consists of a peninsula and 365 islands, 48 of them inhabited, midway along South Korea's southern coast beside the Bay of Suncheon, with a population of about 269,000.
Yeosu has a humid subtropical climate with very warm summers and cold winters, and from June to August more than 200 mm of rain falls each month.
GS Caltex is owned in equal shares by Chevron and GS Energy and was founded in 1967 as Korea's first private oil company, so it follows long-established corporate safety systems.
ATEX is the European legal framework for equipment used in explosive atmospheres (Directive 2014/34/EU). IECEx is the international certification scheme built on the IEC 60079 standards. Buyers outside Europe often ask for both: an IECEx certificate is the technical evidence most national regimes build on, while ATEX is the legal route into the European market.
For the IS-04Z1 both routes are in progress with TÜV in Germany and neither certificate has been issued. The marking target is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4: equipment Group II (surface industry), Category 2 (Zone 1 gas), protection concept ib (intrinsic safety), gas group IIC and temperature class T4.
In Yeosu. A reviewer at Yeosu's refinery and petrochemical complex would expect ATEX and IECEx evidence for handhelds used around crackers, polymer plants and jetties, since licensors and turnaround contractors work internationally. The IS-04Z1 certification is in progress, so only a datasheet is available. Each operator decides what it accepts.
A short checklist for anyone writing or reviewing the specification, with the IS-04Z1 status against each point.
No. Nothing can be bought or taken into a classified area today: certification is in progress and launch is planned for Q4 2026. What is available now is the datasheet, the written certification schedule and evaluation units for safe-area use.
No price is published. While certification is in progress there is no list price and no committed lead time, and a supplier quoting a firm figure for an uncertified Ex handset is promising something it cannot stand behind. Indicative pre-launch pricing is issued in writing against a stated quantity and site.
Not yet. Both routes are in progress with TÜV in Germany and no certificate has been issued. Any listing that says otherwise is wrong.
Likely candidates are refinery process units, ethylene cracker and polymer plants, chemical storage tank farms, marine loading jetties. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.
Not exactly. Explosion proof is a broad everyday term; intrinsic safety is one protection concept, which limits energy so ignition cannot occur. Flameproof (Ex d) is a different concept that contains an explosion. The IS-04Z1 is intrinsically safe by design.
Refining units, a heavy-oil upgrading facility, an olefins cracker, aromatics and polypropylene plants together create flammable vapour and gas areas, including ethylene and aromatic hydrocarbons. The operator sets zones and gas groups, so ask for classification drawings before bringing devices.
The city has an industrial port coast and rail and road links to Gwangju and other Korean cities, so delivery is feasible, though customs and approvals take time for imported electronics. Confirm lead times with your forwarder and the site's gate rules.
It may. A restructuring plan involving Lotte Chemical's Yeosu operations was approved, and its status could change. Procurement and HSE contacts may be in transition. Confirm requirements with the site operator before sending any documents.
