Duque de Caxias is an industrial municipality on Guanabara Bay about 17 km from downtown Rio de Janeiro. It hosts the Petrobras Duque de Caxias refinery (Reduc), which started up in 1961, so refining and gas-processing units create Zone 1 areas. This page explains what to look for in an ATEX and IECEx smartphone for Duque de Caxias, and where the IS-04Z1 stands against that list today.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. The SAMS IS-04Z1 is the intrinsically safe smartphone covered here for Duque de Caxias: pre-launch, designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), with certification in progress and no certificate issued.
Status: pre-launch. IECEx, ATEX, UKEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress and no certificate has been issued; launch is planned for Q4 2026. A buyer's engineering review is separate from the certificate. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

A short profile of the site and the kinds of classified area that matter for portable equipment.
Reduc makes more than 40 products and has a stated capacity of 239,000 barrels a day.
Petrobras plans US$4.6 billion for Reduc in 2026-2030, with maintenance shutdowns of the coking and hydrotreating units scheduled in 2026.
The Reduc delayed coking unit started operating in July 2008 after an investment of about one billion dollars, converting heavy feedstock into diesel and naphtha and producing petroleum coke.
A natural-gas power unit of 63 MW has served the refinery since 1976, so the site generates part of its own electricity as well as processing fuels and lubricants.
The Duque de Caxias refinery (Reduc) has operated since 1961, ranks among Brazil's largest by crude capacity, and supplies about 80 percent of the country's lubricants while leading natural gas processing.
The Duque de Caxias refinery complex covers about 13 square kilometres beside Rodovia Washington Luis in the Campos Eliseos district, making it a very large industrial site inside the Rio de Janeiro metropolitan area.
ATEX is the European legal framework for equipment used in explosive atmospheres (Directive 2014/34/EU). IECEx is the international certification scheme built on the IEC 60079 standards. Buyers outside Europe often ask for both: an IECEx certificate is the technical evidence most national regimes build on, while ATEX is the legal route into the European market.
For the IS-04Z1 both routes are in progress with TÜV in Germany and neither certificate has been issued. The marking target is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4: equipment Group II (surface industry), Category 2 (Zone 1 gas), protection concept ib (intrinsic safety), gas group IIC and temperature class T4.
In Duque de Caxias. At the Reduc refinery in Duque de Caxias, reviewers will want certificate evidence that fits Brazil's Inmetro-accredited route. A dual ATEX and IECEx route is designed to help international contractors on the investment programme. The IS-04Z1 has no certificate yet; this is in progress.
A short checklist for anyone writing or reviewing the specification, with the IS-04Z1 status against each point.
No. Nothing can be bought or taken into a classified area today: certification is in progress and launch is planned for Q4 2026. What is available now is the datasheet, the written certification schedule and evaluation units for safe-area use.
There is no list price yet. SAMS gives indicative pre-launch pricing in writing, against a stated quantity and site, and does not commit to a lead time before certification completes.
Not yet. Both routes are in progress with TÜV in Germany and no certificate has been issued. Any listing that says otherwise is wrong.
Likely candidates are refinery process units, tank farms and pipelines, loading and dispatch areas, biofuel (saf and renewable diesel) processing. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.
Not exactly. Explosion proof is a broad everyday term; intrinsic safety is one protection concept, which limits energy so ignition cannot occur. Flameproof (Ex d) is a different concept that contains an explosion. The IS-04Z1 is intrinsically safe by design.
Large refineries run planned turnarounds, and Reduc is in Petrobras' revamp programme. Exact dates are set by the operator, so confirm shutdown windows, contractor induction rules and permit-to-work practice before scheduling visits with portable equipment.
Process units, lubricant and gas processing areas, tank farms and loading points commonly contain classified zones. Each area's gas group and temperature class is defined in the refinery's classification drawings, so ask the safety department for them before specifying a handheld device.
Possibly. SAF and renewable diesel processing is a different product stream from the original refinery units, so its area classification may differ. Do not assume one marking fits all. Ask Petrobras for the classification of the exact unit before choosing a device.
