More about England that matters for portable equipment

England: rules and approvals

In Great Britain, the 2016 EPS Regulations implement the ATEX equipment directive, and the UK government has extended recognition of goods meeting EU requirements, including CE marking, indefinitely beyond 2024 for many products, in force from 1 October 2024.

England: rules and approvals

The Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations 2002, known as DSEAR, require employers to control risks to safety from fire, explosion and substances corrosive to metals in the workplace.

England: who works there

Employers must also prepare plans for accidents and emergencies and make sure staff are informed and trained to deal with dangerous-substance risks, which is why site inductions usually cover equipment rules.

England: projects and investment

Major-hazard sites fall under the Control of Major Accident Hazards Regulations 2015, with HSE publishing guidance and public information on establishments covered, so top-tier and lower-tier sites follow a further regime.

The term · ATEX and IECEx

What “ATEX and IECEx” means for a smartphone

ATEX is the European legal framework for equipment used in explosive atmospheres (Directive 2014/34/EU). IECEx is the international certification scheme built on the IEC 60079 standards. Buyers outside Europe often ask for both: an IECEx certificate is the technical evidence most national regimes build on, while ATEX is the legal route into the European market.

For the IS-04Z1 both routes are in progress with TÜV in Germany and neither certificate has been issued. The marking target is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4: equipment Group II (surface industry), Category 2 (Zone 1 gas), protection concept ib (intrinsic safety), gas group IIC and temperature class T4.

In England. Across England, an HSE or procurement reviewer typically expects equipment evidence matched to the employer's DSEAR assessment. Refinery and terminal operators at Fawley, Stanlow and Humber also employ international contractors who carry ATEX or IECEx paperwork. A dual route is designed to serve both. Both certifications are in progress for SAMS and none has been issued.

Distributing the IS-04Z1 in England

SAMS is appointing authorised distributors ahead of the Q4 2026 launch. No territory has been granted for England yet and applications are reviewed company by company. Questions · England

Frequently asked questions

Can we buy an ATEX and IECEx smartphone in England today?

Not yet. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and its certification is still in progress ahead of a Q4 2026 launch. No unit goes into a classified area before the certificate covering it exists. The datasheet, the certification schedule and safe-area evaluation units are available now.

What does an ATEX and IECEx smartphone in England cost?

SAMS has not published a price. Any figure you are offered for an uncertified Ex phone should be treated with caution; written indicative pricing is available for a defined quantity and site.

Is the IS-04Z1 ATEX and IECEx certified?

Not yet. Both routes are in progress with TÜV in Germany and no certificate has been issued. Any listing that says otherwise is wrong.

Which areas at England would use it?

Likely candidates are refinery process units, fuel terminals and tank farms, marine oil jetties, petrochemical units. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.

How do I become a SAMS distributor for England?

Apply through the distributor page with your company details and the territory you cover. SAMS reviews applications company by company and has not yet granted a territory for England.

Does COMAH affect which equipment I can use?

COMAH applies to major-hazard sites such as large chemical and fuel storage establishments and adds management duties on top of DSEAR. Each operator typically sets its own rules for portable electronics, so check the site's permit and induction requirements.

Which regulations govern portable electronics in explosive atmospheres in England?

The Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations 2002 require employers to classify hazardous areas and avoid ignition sources. Equipment choice is then based on the zone, gas group and temperature class, so ask the site for its hazardous-area register.

Does the UK accept CE marking or only UKCA?

Guidance says CE marking is recognised alongside UKCA for Great Britain, with the recognition period currently running to 31 December 2027, and that date may change. Buyers should check the current gov.uk guidance and ask their operator's procurement team what evidence they require.
