ExxonMobil
ExxonMobil states it owns and operates a 592,000-barrel-per-day refinery integrated with its chemical plant, with three cogeneration facilities producing around 440 MW.
Singapore's crude refining is run by ExxonMobil, Singapore Refining Company and Aster, with facilities on Jurong Island and Pulau Bukom. Process units, tank farms and jetties create Zone 1 and Zone 2 areas. This page explains what to look for in an ATEX and IECEx mobile phone for Singapore refineries, and where the IS-04Z1 stands against that list today.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. The SAMS IS-04Z1 is the intrinsically safe smartphone covered here for Singapore refineries: pre-launch, designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), with certification in progress and no certificate issued.
Where things stand: the IS-04Z1 has not launched, and none of its four certification routes has produced a certificate yet. A buyer's engineering review is separate from the certificate. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.
| Check | What to look for | IS-04Z1 today |
|---|---|---|
| Marking | II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4 on the rating plate | Design target; not yet marked |
| EU-type examination certificate | Notified body number and certificate ID | In progress with TÜV; not issued |
| IECEx certificate of conformity | Number listed on the IECEx online register | In progress; not issued |

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Singapore Refinery. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.
A short profile of the site and the kinds of classified area that matter for portable equipment.
ExxonMobil states it owns and operates a 592,000-barrel-per-day refinery integrated with its chemical plant, with three cogeneration facilities producing around 440 MW.
Singapore Petroleum Company holds a 50% interest in SRC, whose refinery can process 290,000 barrels of crude per day; Chevron holds the other 50%.
Visitors surrender contraband such as matches and lighters, declare cameras, computers and laptops, wear a security pass at all times and stay with their sponsor inside the refinery.
Staff and visitors reach Jurong Island by bus from Lakeside MRT or Jurong East, with some employers running private shuttles from the checkpoint to their premises.
Singapore Refining Company operates a Jurong Island refinery capable of processing 290,000 barrels of crude oil a day, supplying fuel products and chemical feedstocks to domestic and export markets.
The refinery's main entrance is reached via Merlimau Road along Jurong Island Highway, after a stop at the Jurong Island Checkpoint where visitors collect a visitor pass.
ATEX is the European legal framework for equipment used in explosive atmospheres (Directive 2014/34/EU). IECEx is the international certification scheme built on the IEC 60079 standards. Buyers outside Europe often ask for both: an IECEx certificate is the technical evidence most national regimes build on, while ATEX is the legal route into the European market.
For the IS-04Z1 both routes are in progress with TÜV in Germany and neither certificate has been issued. The marking target is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4: equipment Group II (surface industry), Category 2 (Zone 1 gas), protection concept ib (intrinsic safety), gas group IIC and temperature class T4.
In Singapore refineries. Reviewers at Singapore's refineries would expect ATEX and IECEx evidence, since turnaround contractors and licensors work across several refineries and countries. The IS-04Z1 certification is in progress, so only a datasheet is available now. ExxonMobil, Singapore Refining Company and Aster each decide what they accept, so evidence may need adapting per site.
A short checklist for anyone writing or reviewing the specification, with the IS-04Z1 status against each point.
No. Nothing can be bought or taken into a classified area today: certification is in progress and launch is planned for Q4 2026. What is available now is the datasheet, the written certification schedule and evaluation units for safe-area use.
There is no list price yet. SAMS gives indicative pre-launch pricing in writing, against a stated quantity and site, and does not commit to a lead time before certification completes.
Not yet. Both routes are in progress with TÜV in Germany and no certificate has been issued. Any listing that says otherwise is wrong.
Likely candidates are refinery process units, crude and product storage, jetties, utility and cogeneration areas. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.
Not exactly. Explosion proof is a broad everyday term; intrinsic safety is one protection concept, which limits energy so ignition cannot occur. Flameproof (Ex d) is a different concept that contains an explosion. The IS-04Z1 is intrinsically safe by design.
One refinery states a crude capacity of 290,000 barrels a day, and other operators share the island. The scale means many contractors, so expect formal induction, permits and equipment checks for any portable electronics.
Refineries usually route equipment queries through procurement and the process safety or HSE function, with reliability and maintenance teams as end users. Ask your sponsor for the correct contacts and the current approved-equipment procedure.
No. The refineries use their own approval and contractor systems, so acceptance at one does not carry over to another. The IS-04Z1 has no certificate yet. Send the datasheet to each operator's procurement and HSE teams and confirm with the site operator.
