Gas and dust on one round
An operator may cross from an ammonia or hydrogen area into a granulation hall in one round. A handset designed to Zone 1 and Zone 21 avoids changing device at each boundary.
Yara's main Norwegian production site is at Herøya in Porsgrunn, where ammonia, nitric acid and mineral fertilisers are made inside the Grenland industrial area. This page describes what an explosion proof mobile phone has to do in Norway at that kind of site, where a gas area, a dust area and a corrosive area can sit within a few metres of each other. The IS-04Z1 is designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21; its ATEX and IECEx certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch. The IS-04Z1 is designed around intrinsic safety rather than a flameproof enclosure.

Herøya is a large industrial park beside the Frierfjord, and Yara Porsgrunn is its biggest production unit. The site makes ammonia, nitric acid, complete NPK fertilisers and calcium nitrate, and ships product from its own quay. That chain produces three kinds of hazardous area. Ammonia is flammable as well as toxic, with a narrow flammable range and high ignition energy, so the classified extent around it is often small; the classification drawings and the toxic-gas rules decide what is carried where. Fertiliser dust is the second: granulation, drying, screening and bagging generate dust whose explosibility depends on the product, so the explosion protection document sets the zone. The third is hydrogen, where hydrogen is used or planned for production by electrolysis.
Heat is not the issue at Porsgrunn. Dust, moisture and chemicals are.

Fertiliser dust is fine and hygroscopic, and plants are washed down. IP68 sealing keeps dust and water out of the ports, and rugged build covers vibration near rotating machinery.
Ammonium nitrate products are sensitive to contamination. How a device is cleaned, stored and carried near them is a site rule, so ask Yara's HSE team before an evaluation.
The plants run continuously, with operators on shift rounds and a planned stop for maintenance every few years on the large units such as the ammonia plant. Stops bring in many contractors at once, working under the site's permit system. Between stops the main users are operators, maintenance technicians and laboratory staff.
Yara and the industrial park each set rules for suppliers and visitors. Yara sets its own supplier requirements, and Ex equipment for the plant is judged against its own technical requirements. SAMS has no approval from Yara and has not applied for one; speak to Yara's procurement and HSE teams about the process, and to the park about site access.
One device logs readings, photographs a fault and reports it to the control room as the operator moves from synthesis to granulation.
A stop puts many contractors into classified areas for a short, intensive period. An enrolled handset gives each team the job pack and permits and is wiped on demobilisation.
New electrolysis equipment brings hydrogen, an IIC gas, into the site. A handset marked for IIC is not excluded by it.
Ammonia is flammable but hard to ignite, so many sites classify the area around it as Zone 2 with a small extent, and treat toxicity separately. The classification drawing decides. Zone 1 is the design target for the IS-04Z1, which covers the stricter case.
The IS-04Z1 is designed for Zone 21 dust areas and has IP68 sealing. Dust zones depend on the product and the explosion protection document, and certification for dust is in progress, so nothing is supplied for a dust area until the certificate covers it.
No supply relationship exists, and the device is pre-launch. SAMS will sell through authorised distributors. A trial would be arranged under a trial agreement after Yara's own review.
Tell us the site, the zone and gas group, and roughly how many handsets. The SAMS team replies by email with the datasheet and the certification schedule for Norway. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and certification is in progress, so there is no list price yet; indicative pricing is issued in writing against a stated quantity and site.
Tell us the zone, gas group and operator. We will send the datasheet and the certification schedule for your market.
