Gas and dust in one site
A cracker, a bagging hall and an ammonia plant can share a fence, run by different companies. A handset designed to Zone 1 and Zone 21 avoids swapping devices at each boundary.
Beyond oil and gas, Norway's Ex-rated sites are fertiliser, chemicals, metals and a growing group of carbon capture and hydrogen projects. This page asks what an explosion proof mobile phone has to do for that mix in Norway: ammonia at Herøya, a cracker at Rafnes, furnace gas and dust at smelters, and capture plants. The IS-04Z1 is designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21; its ATEX and IECEx certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch. The IS-04Z1 is designed around intrinsic safety rather than a flameproof enclosure.

Norway's heavy industry grew up around hydropower and the coast. In Grenland, Herøya at Porsgrunn has Yara's fertiliser plants, and Rafnes in Bamble has an ethylene cracker and chlor-alkali production. Metals smelters at Karmøy and Sunndal (aluminium) and at Elkem and Eramet sites (silicon and manganese alloys) make dust and furnace gas. New energy adds carbon capture at the cement works in Brevik, the Mongstad test centre and the Northern Lights terminal at Øygarden, and hydrogen from electrolysis. Each brings a gas hazard, a dust hazard or both inside one fence, which is why a single Zone 1 and Zone 21 handset suits it.
Process plants differ from offshore sites in one way that matters here: many of them have both gas and dust.
A cracker, a bagging hall and an ammonia plant can share a fence, run by different companies. A handset designed to Zone 1 and Zone 21 avoids swapping devices at each boundary.
IP68 sealing keeps out wash-down water and fine dust, and rugged build covers vibration and temperature.
Industrial parks have their own access rules. A managed handset can be restricted to what each company's console allows.
Most sites run continuous shifts, with a planned stop every few years on large units that brings in contractors from across Grenland and further afield. Construction projects for capture and hydrogen follow a different pattern, with large contractor numbers during build and small crews once running. Furnace sites run all year with scheduled relines and repairs, which concentrate contractors around the furnace for short, intense periods. Across all of them, the practical questions for a handset are how quickly a visiting contractor can be enrolled and how it is cleaned and returned afterwards.
Each plant owner sets its own supplier rules, and parks such as Herøya add site access arrangements. Whether an Ex device is accepted is decided by the plant's explosion protection document and technical requirements. SAMS has no approval from any of them; ask each plant's procurement and HSE teams.
Hydrogen, ethylene and propylene each have their own gas group. A handset marked IIC is not excluded by any of them.
Dust and furnace gas are the hazards. A device that tolerates dust ingress and heat is needed, and photographs record conditions.
New plant is classified as it is built. Contractors are enrolled, issued the commissioning pack, and wiped at handover.
Hydrogen is gas group IIC. The marking target for the IS-04Z1 is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4, so it is designed for IIC, subject to certification being completed and the temperature class matching the area.
No. Zone 21 is part of the design target and the certification programme is in progress. No unit goes into a dust area until the certificate covers it.
Herøya, Rafnes, the metals smelters, and the capture and hydrogen projects named above. Each plant's own classification decides what applies. The oil and gas sector is covered on the offshore and gas processing pages.
Tell us the site, the zone and gas group, and roughly how many handsets. The SAMS team replies by email with the datasheet and the certification schedule for Norway. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and certification is in progress, so there is no list price yet; indicative pricing is issued in writing against a stated quantity and site.
Tell us the zone, gas group and operator. We will send the datasheet and the certification schedule for your market.
