Winter, wet and salt
IP68 sealing and rugged build, which covers low temperature and humidity, suit an exposed deck or an outdoor round in January. The ambient range the certificate fixes is published with the datasheet, not promised in advance.
The IS-04Z1 is an intrinsically safe Android handset designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21, from a wet deck in the northern North Sea to a winter round on the Barents coast. It is pre-launch: the ATEX and IECEx programme is running, and Norwegian teams can test a unit while it does.
Launching Q4 2026 · ATEX and IECEx certification programme in progress
The classified areas here run in a line from the shelf to the coast. Gas comes ashore at four processing plants, and the newest work sits furthest north, where Johan Castberg began producing in the Barents Sea in 2025 and Melkøya has liquefied Snøhvit gas since 2007.
Operators and contractors such as Equinor, Aker BP and Vår Energi need an explosion proof mobile phone they can carry into classified areas at Stavanger and Sola, Bergen and Flesland and Kårstø. The IS-04Z1 is designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 duty there.
Most hazardous area handsets are specified against heat and dust. Norway asks the opposite question, and asks it on a rotation.
For evaluators in Norway, the IS-04Z1 explosion proof mobile phone is designed around these points: Winter, wet and salt; Handed over, not owned; Gloves and a full shift; Gas offshore, dust in Grenland; Norwegian on the device; A fix where coverage thins.
IP68 sealing and rugged build, which covers low temperature and humidity, suit an exposed deck or an outdoor round in January. The ambient range the certificate fixes is published with the datasheet, not promised in advance.
A handset on a two-week rotation changes hands more often than it changes battery. Android 16 with EMM and MDM lets it be wiped, re-enrolled and reissued to the incoming crew from the beach.
Rounds are long and outdoors, and there is no charging point inside a classified area. The 4,000 mAh cell is sized for the whole shift with the camera and a work order application open.
The gas marking target is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4, and Zone 21 dust protection belongs to the same programme. That matters where a fertiliser plant puts a powder area metres from a gas one.
The framework regulations say Norwegian shall be used as far as possible offshore. Android 16 carries a Norwegian interface, and the manual and declaration of conformity are produced in Norwegian alongside English.
4G LTE, Wi-Fi and four-constellation GNSS hold a position and a link across an installation network, a plant boundary or a coastal site where one operator is not enough.
Norway sits outside the EU but inside the EEA, so ATEX applies here as it does in the union and no separate Norwegian product approval follows. What differs is who supervises the user: Havtil offshore, Arbeidstilsynet onshore, and a procurement culture that checks Magnet JQS before it reads a datasheet.
The product side is shorter than people expect. Norway is not in the European Union, but the EEA Agreement makes ATEX 2014/34/EU Norwegian law, implemented through the regulation on equipment for use in potentially explosive atmospheres that DSB administers with Arbeidstilsynet. A notified body certificate and the CE marking are the basis for supply, with no national scheme on top. Offshore buyers usually want the IECEx certificate too, because that is the currency the shelf reads, and radio conformity sits under the Radio Equipment Directive with surveillance by Nkom.
The duty side is where Norway is genuinely different. Offshore, Havtil supervises safety and the working environment on the shelf, under the name it took on 1 January 2024 in place of Petroleumstilsynet. The regime is functional: the regulations set the goal, the guidance points to standards such as NORSOK and IEC 60079, and the operator documents that its own choice meets them. Onshore, Arbeidstilsynet takes the workplace side and the explosion protection document. The third gate is commercial, because operators look for a profile in Magnet JQS (formerly EPIM JQS), the qualification register shared by operators on the Norwegian shelf, before opening a technical evaluation.
Typical Zone 1 and Zone 21 duty for the IS-04Z1 explosion proof mobile phone in Norway includes: Isolation checks between the deck and the CCR; Rounds and revisjonsstans at the coastal plants; Small crews a long way north; Gas and powder inside one Grenland fence.
On a producing installation the walk back to the control room is the cost of every permit question. A Zone 1 handset lets the technician photograph an isolation point, confirm it by voice and close the work order where the valve is.
Kårstø, Kollsnes and Nyhamna run outdoor rounds all year, then pack a year of maintenance into one shutdown. With every crew on a handset enrolled in the site console, the job pack, the photograph and the sign-off stay in one system.
Melkøya and the Barents fields work with compact teams, long darkness and weather that closes the helicopter route. Equipment has to keep working outdoors and keep a position fix, because there is no second device on the shelf to borrow.
At Herøya and Rafnes an ammonia area, a cracker and a bagging hall sit inside one perimeter, run by different companies. A handset covering Zone 1 and Zone 21 ends the habit of swapping phones at each boundary.
The device has not launched, so nothing below asks for an order. The sequence lets your qualification and our certification run alongside each other.
Tell us the zones, the gas group and the temperature class from your classification drawings, whether the users are offshore or onshore, and how many rotations you would equip. Enquiries reach SAMS Mobile at info@sams-mobile.com.
You receive the specification, the target marking string and a written status for each certification in progress: enough for an HMS engineer to draft the equipment selection entry and for procurement to open a vendor file.
Evaluation units go to Norwegian operators and contractors under a trial agreement. A useful trial covers enrolment in your own console, handover and wipe between crews, cold outdoor use and a full shift with the camera.
On completion of certification, supply runs through a Nordic partner or direct, and we register in Magnet JQS where a frame agreement calls for it. Pre-launch pricing is quoted on request against a defined quantity.
Send your site, zone and gas group, and we will answer for your plant rather than in general.
Ask about Norway →No. It is designed to ATEX 2014/34/EU for Zone 1 and Zone 21 and the programme is in progress, with IECEx alongside it. Launch is planned for Q4 2026, and nothing is supplied for classified-area use before the certificate covering it exists.
No. The EEA Agreement brings ATEX 2014/34/EU into Norwegian law and DSB administers it here, so a notified body certificate and the CE marking are the whole product-side requirement. No additional Norwegian scheme follows.
There is no list price before launch, and a supplier quoting one for an uncertified device is worth a second look. Pre-launch pricing is given against a stated quantity, configuration and support scope. Evaluation units are issued under a trial agreement, not sold.
That is one of the design cases. Zone 1 classification, IP68 sealing and rugged build are aimed at exposed decks, and the certificate evidence is written to go into the operator documentation Havtil supervises. Offshore trials are part of the pilot programme.
Yes. Android 16 carries a Norwegian interface, and the manual, safe-use instructions and declaration of conformity are produced in Norwegian alongside English, which is what the framework regulations expect offshore.
Construction is IP68 sealing and a rugged build, and the design assumes outdoor use rather than a heated control room. The ambient range fixed by the certificate is published on the datasheet; cold battery behaviour is what a Norwegian trial should measure.
Registration is part of the launch programme here, because operators on the Norwegian and Danish shelf work from that register. Ahead of it, evaluation units and documentation come under a direct trial agreement.
Tell us the site, the zone and gas group, and roughly how many handsets. The SAMS team replies by email with the datasheet and the certification schedule for Norway. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and certification is in progress, so there is no list price yet; indicative pricing is issued in writing against a stated quantity and site.
We are looking for safety and industrial distributors already supplying the shelf operators, the coastal gas plants and the Grenland process industry, able to hold an Magnet JQS profile and carry Norwegian documentation and a service route.
Go deeper with the IS-04Z1: explosion proof phone for Gas Processing and Terminals; explosion proof phone for Offshore Oil and Gas; explosion proof phone for Process Industry and New Energy; explosion proof phone for Aker BP; explosion proof phone for Equinor; explosion proof phone for Gassco; explosion proof phone for Yara.
Buyers look for the IS-04Z1 in Norway in different ways. Each guide below answers one buyer search honestly: what the term means, the route to buy, and where certification stands today.
