Explosion proof mobile phone for refining and petrochemicals in Hungary

MOL runs both ends of Hungary's hydrocarbon chain: the Danube Refinery at Százhalombatta, on the river south of Budapest, and, through MOL Petrolkémia, the cracker and polymer plants at Tiszaújváros in the north-east. This page is for the HSE, instrumentation and maintenance teams at those two sites who are asking what an explosion proof mobile phone for Hungary has to do before it can be carried past the gate. The IS-04Z1 is designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21, and its certification is still in progress. The IS-04Z1 is designed around intrinsic safety rather than a flameproof enclosure.

Where an explosion proof mobile phone is needed in Hungarian refining and petrochemicals

The Danube Refinery takes crude by pipeline, from the Druzhba (Barátság) line and from the Adria line through Croatia, and its nameplate capacity is roughly eight million tonnes of crude a year. Around the distillation, conversion and treating units sit hydrogen systems, sour water and gas treatment, product tankage and loading facilities. At Tiszaújváros the picture changes from fuel to chemistry: a steam cracker, polyethylene and polypropylene lines, and the polyol complex inaugurated in May 2024, which combines hydrogen peroxide, propylene oxide, polyol and propylene glycol plants. Between the two sites a handset meets almost every classified atmosphere a hydrocarbon operator has to manage.

Operators and contractors

MOL Group
Parent of both sites; runs the Danube Refinery and the domestic upstream business.
MOL Petrolkémia
Cracker, polymer plants and the polyol complex at Tiszaújváros.
Maintenance contractors
Mechanical, electrical and instrument crews who arrive in numbers for planned shutdowns.
Inspection and NDT firms
Short visits to vessels, lines and tanks, often with their own equipment and permits.
Engineering contractors
Project teams on tie-ins and revamps that run alongside live units.

Classified units and areas

Crude and vacuum distillation
Light hydrocarbon vapour, mostly gas group IIA, with Zone 1 and Zone 2 around flanges and pumps.
Hydrogen systems
Hydrogen is gas group IIC, which is why the IIC marking target matters on a refinery.
Sour gas and sulphur handling
Hydrogen sulphide adds a toxic hazard that a gas detector, not a phone, has to cover.
Steam cracker
Ethylene, propylene and furnace fuel gas, with high pressure and cold sections.
Polyolefin lines
Hydrocarbon gas in reactors and combustible polymer dust in pelletising, silos and bagging.
Polyol complex
Propylene oxide is a highly flammable gas group IIB liquid with a wide flammable range.
Tank farms and loading
Open-air Zone 1 and Zone 2 areas around pump bays, vents and gantries.

What a refinery-to-polymer chain asks of a handset

Gas group IIC on the datasheet, not just IIA

Most refinery vapour is IIA or IIB, but hydrogen and the hydrogen-rich streams in a cracker are IIC. The marking target for the IS-04Z1 is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4, so one handset covers the whole chain without a note saying which units it may not enter.

Dust where the polymer is finished

Pelletising, silo and bagging areas on a polyolefin line carry combustible polymer dust, and static builds on the powder. That is Zone 21 or Zone 22 territory, and the design target for the IS-04Z1 includes Zone 21 alongside Zone 1.

Open-air units with no sheltered charging point

A walk from the control building to a distillation column or a cracker furnace is long, and charging inside the classified boundary is not an option. The 4,000 mAh battery is sized to last a shift rather than to need a top-up mid-round.

Photographs that go into the work order

A 50 MP camera records a weeping flange or a completed isolation clearly enough to attach to the job. Where a site restricts photography, Android Enterprise policy from the existing MDM console can disable the camera in defined areas.

Contractor devices that come and go

Android 16 with Android Enterprise lets a unit be enrolled, restricted to approved applications, wiped and reissued as one contractor crew leaves and the next arrives. IP68 sealing copes with rain and washdown on the open units.

Where the IS-04Z1 would go to work

Operations01

Unit rounds on the Danube Refinery

An outside operator walking a distillation or treating unit has to read local gauges, log a leak and call the console. One handset in the classified area replaces a radio and a paper round sheet, with a four-constellation GNSS fix on each observation.

Maintenance02

Shutdown work at Tiszaújváros

During a planned stoppage of the cracker or a polyolefin line, hundreds of tasks run in parallel under permit. A handset that carries the permit, the isolation list and the contractor directory saves repeated walks to the permit office.

Inspection03

Tank farm and loading gantry checks

Inspectors at product tanks, vents and loading arms need photographs and positions tied to a tag number. The same device holds the inspection application and sends the record without a trip to a safe area.

How work is organised

Shutdowns, contractors and what procurement will ask

Both complexes work to a pattern of continuous operation punctuated by planned shutdowns, called leállás in Hungarian, when contractor headcount rises sharply and device control becomes a daily problem. Shift operators run fixed rounds; maintenance crews work to permits issued at the start of each shift. For equipment suppliers, MOL's procurement and HSE teams decide what may be bought and carried. We have not verified a named supplier-registration scheme, so we do not describe one: ask the site's procurement, HSE and instrumentation teams for their current approval route, the documents they require and any site induction. In practice a team will expect the ATEX certificate and marking, the instructions in Hungarian, and a clear statement of the gas group, temperature class and ambient range.

Questions · Refining and petrochemicals

Frequently asked questions

Can the Danube Refinery and Tiszaújváros use one handset specification?

From a technical view, yes: the design target covers gas group IIC and Zone 1 and Zone 21, which spans both sites. Whether MOL treats it as one approval or two is MOL's decision, and each site will apply its own procurement and HSE steps.

Does hydrogen change the gas group requirement?

Yes. Hydrogen is gas group IIC, so a refinery or cracker with hydrogen systems needs equipment marked for IIC, not just IIA or IIB. The IS-04Z1 marking target is Ex ib IIC T4, and the final marking will be whatever the certificate states.

Is propylene oxide treated differently from refinery vapour?

Propylene oxide is a gas group IIB substance with a wide flammable range, so the polyol complex needs careful area classification. That is a job for the plant's own safety team; a handset marked IIC covers IIB atmospheres, subject to its temperature class.
