Explosion proof mobile phone for gas, storage and biofuels in Hungary

Hungary has no coastline, so its gas security rests on pipeline transmission run by FGSZ and on underground storage at sites such as Zsana, while Pannonia Bio and Hungrana add bioethanol and starch plants with flammable liquid and combustible dust. This page is for the HSE, operations and maintenance teams at those installations asking what an explosion proof mobile phone for Hungary needs to cover. The IS-04Z1 is designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21; certification is in progress and no certificate has yet been issued. The IS-04Z1 is designed around intrinsic safety rather than a flameproof enclosure.

Where an explosion proof mobile phone is needed on Hungarian gas and biofuel sites

FGSZ owns and operates the high-pressure transmission system and, according to its own published description, runs eight compressor stations. Gas enters at border points including Mosonmagyaróvár from Austria and Csanádpalota from Romania, where a compressor station was handed over in 2019, and a virtual interconnection point sits at Beregdaróc on the Ukrainian border. Storage is split between Magyar Földgáztároló, with reservoirs at Pusztaederics, Kardoskút, Zsana and Hajdúszoboszló, and MMBF, which operates Szőreg. On the biofuel side, Pannonia Bio's Dunaföldvár plant is a corn-to-ethanol dry mill on the Danube, and Hungrana processes maize into starch, isoglucose and ethanol at Szabadegyháza.

What gas storage and biofuel plants ask of a handset

Natural gas is IIA, ethanol is IIB

The two parts of this page differ in gas group, but a handset marked Ex ib IIC T4, which is the IS-04Z1 target, sits above both. The temperature class matters most around ethanol and hot dryers, and the certificate will state the figure.

Remote, unmanned compressor and metering sites

Much of a transmission network is unattended, and a technician may drive a long way to one valve site. A handset with GNSS, a 50 MP camera and a 4,000 mAh battery records the visit with a position and a photograph, and the battery is sized to outlast a long day.

Dust where the grain and starch move

Pannonia Bio and Hungrana both handle large volumes of dry organic powder. That is the reason the design target includes Zone 21, not just Zone 1, and the reason a gas-only phone does not solve the problem at these sites.

Cold, wet and dusty by turns

Great Plain winters are hard and summers dusty at harvest. IP68 sealing keeps out dust and water, and the ambient range that applies will be the one on the certificate.

Managed like the rest of the estate

Android 16 with Android Enterprise lets a gas or biofuel operator enrol the unit in its existing MDM console, restrict the applications and apply a photography policy where the site requires one.

Where the IS-04Z1 would go to work

Transmission01

Compressor station rounds and outages

An operator on a compressor station round logs readings and faults, and during an outage the permit and isolation record goes on the same device. Contractors working on integrity or valve replacement can be enrolled for the job only.

Storage02

Injection and withdrawal seasons at Zsana

Storage runs on a seasonal cycle, filling in summer and withdrawing in winter, and activity at wellsites follows it. A handset with navigation and photographs helps crews find and report a fault on a well pad in a flat landscape.

Biofuels03

Plant rounds at Dunaföldvár and Szabadegyháza

A dust area and a vapour area can sit within a few hundred metres on an ethanol or starch site. One handset for both lets the operator log a dust leak or a spill and call the control room without changing equipment.

How work is organised

Seasons, outages and what procurement will ask

Gas transmission and storage follow the gas year: planned outages are timed around demand, and storage work clusters in the shoulder seasons. Biofuel and starch plants run continuously with scheduled stoppages for cleaning and maintenance, and harvest sets the pace of grain deliveries. Contractors appear for those windows. Gas networks and storage installations are regulated by the energy and mining supervision authorities, which we have not mapped to a particular supplier scheme, and we have not verified a named registration scheme for FGSZ, Magyar Földgáztároló, MMBF, Pannonia Bio or Hungrana. Ask each operator's procurement and HSE teams for their approval route, the documents they require and any induction, and expect questions on the ATEX certificate and marking, Hungarian instructions and the temperature class.

Questions · Gas, storage and biofuels

Frequently asked questions

Do compressor stations need a different handset from biofuel plants?

The area classification differs, but the design target of Zone 1 and Zone 21 and a marking of Ex ib IIC T4 is intended to cover both gas and dust. Each operator's own classification drawings decide where a unit may go.

Why does Zone 21 matter at a bioethanol or starch plant?

Grain and starch dust can ignite or explode when dispersed in air, and dust layers can also ignite on hot surfaces. A gas-only certification would not cover the milling and drying areas, which is why the dust design target is part of the IS-04Z1 programme.

Is the IS-04Z1 certified for Hungarian gas storage yet?

No. It is pre-launch and ATEX, IECEx and NEC 500 certification are all in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch. Nothing should be taken into a classified area until the relevant certificate is issued.

Who supervises gas storage installations in Hungary?

Upstream and gas storage installations answer to the Hungarian energy and mining supervision authority, which the country page names as SZTFH, rather than to a labour inspector alone. Check the operator's own requirements for what it expects from suppliers.
