Explosion proof mobile phone for shipping, ports and bunkering in Greece

An explosion proof mobile phone for Greek shipping and bunkering has to answer a question that most land sites never raise: is the user ashore or afloat? Around Piraeus and Perama, at the Coral fuel depot and the shipyards, and offshore at Energean's Prinos field in the Gulf of Kavala, the same handset can fall under very different acceptance routes. This page is for the HSE and marine superintendents who have to draw that line. The IS-04Z1 is designed around intrinsic safety rather than a flameproof enclosure.

What is classified around Piraeus, Perama and the Gulf of Kavala

Piraeus is the home port of the fleet Greek owners control, and bunkering is part of that business. Coral's fuel depot at Perama has a capacity of about 120,000 m³ and a fuels jetty within the container terminal area, and other suppliers such as SEKA list loading from the Motor Oil and Aspropyrgos refinery tank farms. Perama is also the ship repair zone: the Piraeus Port Authority operates three floating docks there, and a vessel in dock brings tank cleaning, hot work and gas-freeing to a yard that is otherwise a conventional industrial site. In the north, Energean operates the Prinos field about 8 km west of Thasos and 18 km south of Kavala. Its offshore facilities include drilling platforms, a processing platform and an unmanned gas platform, with crude exported by subsea pipeline to an onshore plant and sour gas by a separate line. The result is three hazard pictures: vapour at a fuel jetty, tank and gas-free atmospheres in a repair yard, and sour production gas offshore.

Classified units and areas

Bunker barges and pump rooms
Vapour spaces at manifolds and tank vents during transfers; afloat, so a vessel matter.
Fuel jetties and tank farms
Gasoline and gas oil storage with pipeline, road and jetty loading.
Floating docks and repair berths
Tank entry, hot work and gas-freeing on vessels in dock.
Prinos platforms
Wellheads, separation, sour gas treatment and produced water.
Onshore plant and storage
Crude and gas handling and storage tanks on the Kavala coast.

What the waterfront does to an explosion proof mobile phone

Salt, spray and a hull alongside decide whether a handset lasts a season. Acceptance routes decide whether it is allowed on board at all.

Ashore and afloat are different approvals

An ATEX certificate describes equipment in a classified area on land. A bunker barge or tanker deck answers to its flag administration, its class society and the owner's own rules. The IS-04Z1 marking target is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4, with certification in progress; we will say what it covers when the certificates exist.

Spray and wash-down

Quaysides, barge decks and dock floors are wet. IP68 sealing and rugged build are aimed at driven spray and routine rinsing.

A hull is bad for radio

Steel tank spaces and pump rooms block signal. Offline-capable applications and a handset that stores readings until it is back in coverage suit that better than live tools.

Offshore shifts without a spare

Reaching a platform in the Gulf of Kavala is a planned transfer, not a quick trip. The 4,000 mAh battery is specified for a full working day, and a second enrolled handset is cheap beside a missed transfer.

Sour gas needs a detector

Hydrogen sulphide protection comes from personal gas detectors and the platform's own systems, not the phone. The handset carries permits and reports; the detector stays on the belt.

Where the IS-04Z1 goes to work.

Work on the waterfront runs to vessel schedules. A bunker call is arranged around the ship's departure, repair work around a docking window, and offshore work around a transfer. Each operator, yard and vessel has its own access rules, and none accepts another's approval automatically. We claim no relationship with any operator named here; this is what their teams would ask of any supplier.

Transfer alongside at Piraeus

A supplier crew, a ship crew and a surveyor stand round one manifold. Quantities, sampling and a photograph of the connection are recorded on the spot, once the marine acceptance route for the handset is settled.

Ship repair02

Gas-free checks in Perama docks

Before hot work, a tank is tested, signed off and recorded. A handset carrying the permit and the reading saves a walk to the yard office, and a camera policy keeps vessels' internal photographs in the right system.

Offshore03

Platform visits at Prinos

A crew transferred to the processing platform spends a shift on the structure. The handset provides an offline checklist, location and photographs, and syncs on return to the onshore plant.

Frequently asked questions

Can the IS-04Z1 go on a bunker barge or tanker?

Not on an ATEX certificate alone. Vessel use answers to the flag administration, the class society and the owner's requirements, and some owners want a separate marine assessment. Send us the vessel type and flag and we will state what is and is not covered. The device is pre-launch with certification in progress.

Would the same handset work at the Coral depot and at Prinos?

The hardware is the same; the approvals are not. A shore depot sits under a plant's explosion protection document, an offshore platform under the operator's offshore safety regime. Ask each operator's procurement and HSE teams what comes first before a trial.

Who decides what is allowed in a Perama dock?

The yard and the vessel owner share the decision, and the permit to work rules apply. Equipment for gas-freeing and hot work checks is controlled by the yard's competent person, so involve them early.

Does bunkering volume change what we buy?

Volume changes how many handsets are used and how fast crews change, not the classification. More operators means more enrolments, and the management console is what keeps wiping and reissue practical.
